If one is looking for 200-250cc, 4 stroke, road legal off road bike, similar to say an XR250L Honda what options are there?
I.e what models by other manufacturers should I be looking for?
Nothing against honda except for the price, so I want to compare value with other makers.

Recent Road legal 200 to 250 4 stroke trail bikes out there at the moment would include. XR250L, DRZ250, DR200, TTR250 and the KLX250 at the trail bike end. A lot of the 250 four stroke enduro bikes can also be bought road legal, look at the WR250, 250EXCR and TE250. Be aware that the enduro bikes are going to better off road probably not as good on road and a lot more maintenance.

klx 300 aint road legal...but good bike
Dr-z250's are a good bike for 6 and a halfish on the road new....brillent buying...and excellent for a beginner...also there are a fw second hand klx250's about that are road legal...they are also0 a good buy...yamaha doesn't really have a compeditive bike in this bracket...the ttr250s are poorly built and have lost cost budget suspension...the motor has been aroud aslong as motu [he''ll show up hear in a short while with his advice...:2thumbsup ]
I'ld go with the DR-Z250....hard bike to beat for a newbie or novice

So you can get a road kit and make the KLX250 street legal, but not the 300? How's that? I thought they were the same bike.'Cept for the tin tank button start KLX250,but we won't go there. The TTR250 isn't as old as on XR surely? I think mechanicly it's better than an XR - simple bucket tappet DOHC,rather than the complicted sohc with radial rockers of the XR....proved with the high wear rate of the Honda system.
If moneys no object,go for the WR250f,otherwise the KLX250/300.....but if an XR250 turned up I'd jump for that instead. And yeah - they want too much for XRs and they are beaten to death.
Hey! and so what's wrong with 2 strokes!? RMX250,CRM250 will run rings around those 4 stroke things in every department.....if you are a sook and want a 2 stroke with electric start and low seat..there is the capable but overlooked DT230.

KLX300 ain't road legal?
If you put KLX250 stickers on it then it would be :)
I had a KTM250EXC-R with the 350 big bore kit on my restricted. The guy at the testing station who was doing the certification took it for a ride and came back and said "shit that goes well for a 250!" :blip:

thats really wierd mate cause...Id admit it looked a few years old , but there was a rd legal klx 300 parked up by the dairy by my work last wednesday, it looked a bit beaten to say the least.
I just had a thought....what about a crm250 ? 2 stroke rd legal. quite grunty too

would make an ass kicker of a motard.. fairly cheap and more balls than a 250 4 stroke, just different power spread, but personally i find a 2stroke 250 the least "yappy" of most 2 strokes. from memory the CRM's have a linear powerband

I have also been considering a road legal 4str trail bike that I can get my license on. Had almost discounted the KLX300 as not road legal and over 250cc, but a indicators and a KLX250 sticker could be the answer....
What is involved in making a KLX road legal?
Cheers

have you thought about the CRM250 ??? as i mentioned earlier ? grunty and easy to rebuild if it blows (not that it will as long as you treat it good, and its not already a shitter)

Is a CRM different from a CRF? 2 stroke or 4? I've heard the maintenance costs on CRF's can be a killer but have always been a 4 stroke kinda guy.

A CRM is a two stroke.
Basically a Jap only enduro/trail detuned version of a CR250.
I've heard good things about 'em.

Oscar is right, it is a CR250 redone for Enduro.
It has a headlight, more flywheel and been retuned to give a bit more bottom end power.

I'm a bit of a Yamaha man, even though I own a 'zuki, so I'm gonna say a TTR250 or a WR250F. Or there is the option of the KTM 250EXC 2 stroke. Quite a fan of the orange bikes too...

2 strokes suck! he said he wanted a four stroke. XR250,WR250,KLX250 would be a good bike
