Right let this be a lesson to you all.
I consider myself to be a pretty on the ball kinda guy. I have the odd moment of selective amnesia, particularly in connection with my other-half, but in general i'm reasonably clued in and careful.
So for no particular reason what so ever, I did the most stupid assinine thing today.
Parked the bike down in the civic carpark (less prying eyes underground) popped my gloves under the pillion hump, slotted the D-ring of the helmet on its hook and replaced the seat hump. Went off for about a half hour, came back reached for my keys------no keys. Oh crap, oh crap.
Standing beside the bike, thinking how did i loose my keys when, i spot them hanging out of the pillion helmet lock key slot!!!!!!!
So I had left my pride and joy unattended for 30 mins, with the keys, and helmet, in plain sight for anyone to pinch. What a complete and utter tool.
Said a little thank you to the bike gods/demons? and went on my way, swearing I'll never do that again.
So the whole thing must have unsettled me a little, 'cus the first set of lights i reach and stop at, I feel something hit my back - seems I hadn't replaced the seat hump, on the pillion properly and its completely loose and about to hit the deck! D'oh.
The only positive thing to say, is I was parked beside an absolute mint red TL1000S, if it belongs to someone here, nice one its a bueat.
Right I'm off to give myself a good kick up the arse now and possibly develop some obsessive compulsive behavior towards my keys and their general well being.
Hey it could happen to you

I see your 30 mins, and I raise you 12 hours..
When my bro was in Auckland hospital last year with his broken leg, I was pretty much in there from opening till long gone chuckin out time. I rocked up on the bike (as I normally do), and parked up by the doors into the lower part of the hospital by the car park. Got my jeans out of the boot (it's hot to sit in gear all day), dropped them and my gloves, picked them back up, put the boot on, doors opened at 10 and I was in.. Getting changed at 9.30 that evening, couldn't find my key, so just thought I'd look on the way down to the bike. Got to the bike, still no key, and forgot to look. Bugger, have to go back up. Thought I'd just quickly chuck my stuff by the bike and run back up. Swa the kickstand had sunk into the concrete, then saw my key by the seat for the boot!! In full view of everyone! so 'kin lucky..

You eejit!
I've never done anything so silly.
Although there was this one time when I parked my bike in Highbury, went off shopping, and when I returned, the keys had magically transported themselves from my pocket into the ignition...

Never done it with my bike, but I came home from work a few months back to find the door of my flat wide open. There's a catch behind the door so if you push it against the wall it locks in place. I must have pushed it as I walked out and not noticed that it hadn't shut behind me...

safer there than on the road beside your bike... someone might run over it.

Youse fellers are funny...
Although I've passed a car (not a bike) with the keys left in the door and thought what do I do here? Do ya leave them in the door? Do you put them on the drivers seat and lock the door? Do you just walk on thinking it's not your business? I'd hate to think I could have stopped someones pride and joy from getting swiped and did nothing.

My brother did a similar thing a few years back, unfortunately someone did take his pride and joy, never to be seen again. He was absolutely gutted.
His excuse was that he was totally stressed at the time as he was considering a marriage proposal which involved moving to Canada and he didn't know what to do, he was so pre-occupied that he left the keys in the ignition.
Glad you still have your bike anyway! :2thumbsup

I've actually done something very similiar twice..
One: Parked the bike, did the steering lock (couldn't be bothered putting the bike in the shed)... get up to go to work.. where's the keys.. I knew I had put the steering lock on... remembered that.. but not where I put the keys... yeah ya guessed it.. still in the bike! overnight! (dumbarse!)
two: Got camera out of the boot of the bike.. with the spare key! took a few shots of the nice bikes =) put camera back in the boot.. took off.. stopped down the road (40km's or later) go to get camera out to take another pretty shot of the bikes and.. yeah the spare key was still there (phew! - dumbarse2!)
haven't done that since!

Never done it with my bike, but I came home from work a few months back to find the door of my flat wide open.
I'm glad we live in a 'nice' area. The boys have left the front door wide open a few times, and I've left the garage door wide open more than a few times. Usually the wife will notice this when she gets home, but a couple of times when I haven't noticed the "1" LED on the alarm panel is lit, I've set the alarm only to be greeted by a cacophony of noise when someone's walked past it and set the alarm off.

Yip I have to own up to this too!
I went shopping at the mall for a while, on my way back up the to the bike I couldn't find my key (it always goes in the same place). Panicing I went to the bike and there it was in the ignition key DOH!!!! in plain view too DOH!!!!!
I felt like such a womble!
So glad that I did not have to explain to friends and family how bike got stolen.

Feel a bit better now - seeing as I would appear to be not the only numty here:blink: .
Have to say this all reflects well on NZ, I know if I'd done this in some of the other countries I've lived in I'd be crying into a pint about now.

Was visitin old Tane Mahuta, (the big Kauri tree), and left the keys in the ignition! Maybe the fact that my mates Daytona beside my old 600F helped as anyone would no doubt have preferred the Daytona to a 16 year old bike?

Haven't done that, but i have locked my key under the back seat. The only key I had at the time, in front of a shop. Now I have a spring key chain that will haul the keys back to me when I let go.
It's amazing how many people will just carry on past as you attempt to dissasemble the back of a bike.

I think most bikers do this sort of crap at least once, most times it comes to nothing but....
Fortunately not to any of my bikes, I have left the keys in mine twice and been lucky both times, maybe thats why I never win lotto?

Well I think i'll be able to one up you all with leaving the key in plain view.
Auckland varsity - the small, main, one way road between the library and the main quad where all the bikes park and thousands of people walk between bikes every day....
Left the damn thing in the storage/pillion seat lock in full view. Came back to see my mates sticking a ransom note in the gap between the seat and the fairing saying they wanted money for my key to be returned. They didn't get a cent but at least nothing was stolen

i got a flat battery one cold waikato evening, so got it jumpstarted, then drove the 1km home. i then left it running in the drive (which is only 7 metres long off the footpath - straight into the garage door) - intending on leaving it running for 10 mins so it would start in the expected frost the following morning. imagine my surprise when i come out in the said morning - which was 10 hours after i had left the car running in the drive, to find said car toasty warm already..........

and there's leaving the garage door open with keys in the bike and internal access door open.
someone drove past, knew where i worked (well everyone knew where i worked - there was usually a reflective commodore parked in the drive), and called 111 to get them to tell me the house was wiiiiide open....

I can recall forgetting to remove my key from the rear seat of my bike several times, thankfully each time was in the privacy of my gargre and not in a public carpark...there must've been a hint of humour in your heart when you saw them hanging there though, right??

But that's just me

Almost locked them under the seat the other day... well i thought i did. I'd just been polishing the plastic bits and afterwards plonked the seat back on. Then had that dreaded feeling that i'd left them there. Oh crap im saying to myself looks like ill have to take the back end apart. ohwell had it off before anyway. Waltz over to the socket set on the bench and the keys were on top. Total stupidity:bash:.

I see your 30 mins, and I raise you 12 hours..
Ha! raise you another 12 and 4 hours for luck.... Admittedly that was in Alfred St on my MZ. Barrel key and you'd hardly want to steal that, but 3 or 4 other times I walked by 30 mins after parking and noticed my keys in it. Havent done it since that bike though...

Phew, you must have been so relieved when your "oh no!" moment turned into a "man, am I lucky!" moment!
I have left home on more than one occasion and headed to Wellington for the day. Got home after 5pm and found at least one door or window open and or unlocked... Not advisable, no matter where you live!

easy to do..
done it twice at work, left the bike in the middle of town all day in the ignition.
Did it once at the top of Mt Ruhapeu when i went skiing, the nice carpark attendants too care of the keys all day for me.
Left them in the car all afternoon in the centre of wellington the other weekend, some helpful person put them on the wheel for me :)
Oh, and my XT could never be locked and to switch it on you just needed to connect the red and the black...
But there again who would want a mucky F650 or a honda odessy?
