I'm planning on doing a day trip to Waiheke Island sometime after christmas and was wondering if anybody else would be interested. The idea is to cruise around a few Wineries and cafe's and generally check out the sites. Return ferry ride is $40.00. Yeah, I was planning to organise a KB ride some time during the summer when the weather reaches a stable and consistent state of sunny gloriousness. Was thinking of some time in the new year.

I pretty much had the same idea. Cruise around the island in a relaxed fashion. See as much of the island as possible, enjoy somne cafe's and wineries, the beaches etc. Basically amke a day of it.

Need to organise a meet up place as well....
and all ride to the ferry terminal together,
as there are two places that you catch the vehicle ferry from.
Plus not everyone knows where both the Ferry wharf's are.
One is up north somewhere and one is out south way.

Plus the time that the ferry's leave by and what time to be at the ferry terminal to get all the bikes loaded up. Oh yeah and the total cost.
Do we need to tie the bikes down, and therefore do they supply strops or do we bring our own?
And what time to get back to all be at the wharf to catch the return ferry back to Auckland.

Plus how long does it take to get to Waiheke Island for those that don't travel to well on the sea. (hehehehe)

So it sounds like the idea has some merit, that's good to hear. I'll contact the ferries this week and find out all the relevent info. I'll also see if i can contact some wineries and see what the go is there. I'm sure we could all pack a bit of food and find a BBQ somewhere along the way that we could use. I'll keep you posted on what I discover.

You can hire scooters or bikes on the Island too. There is a shack straight off the people ferry. We have had lots of fun doing this over the years :-)

Actually you cant really call them bikes.... more like a tired old horse that does the same ride for years, flogged mercilessly by people who dont really know how to ride!

They don't tie the bikes down. We've been over on the road-legal dirtbikes a couple of times. Last time we'd left it a bit late & the ferry waited for the two of us (bloody decent, I think).
You've also got to pay for riders/pillions on top of the $40 for the bike.
I think it's 45 minutes to get there.
Damn fine ride though.

Depending on time of year/date, it'll pay to check whether you need to book or not. They may do a bulk discount, too.

I don't think I want to go over and look at the house we built on a paddock in the middle of nowhere and see it now surrounded by houses and vineyards,and see it's worth 8 times what we built it for,or 5 times what we sold it for.I'd be sad to see all the gravel roads that were my playground all sealed,and I know our off road riding areas are now parks and sports grounds and subdivisions.Most of the people I knew have left the Island,fleeing from the new rich who have taken over from societies missfits.But my two very good workmates are still there,and one has got back into bikes.You should do it on a dirt track day,that was always a bit of fun - but I bet the safety freaks have sanitised it beyond belief.

little thought would be weather on the day and the inability to tie the bike downs. the ferry is large but there can be a nice swells popping through. also sea spray.
if its a calm even day. then hell i'm in. last time i went over there it was great fun. i know there was alot of gravel, and only enough tar-seal to last under an hour of riding. but its alot of fun, and well worth it, take ya togs too. there are some excellent beaches.
so i'm in.

usually in the mornings the water/seas are calmer and try to make it during neap tides not spring/king tides.
in january the (14th sat and 15th sun) or (21st sat and 22nd sun) are good neap tides.

Good idea...have ridden the island before on those little shit boxes (GN250)
they hire out but would be keen to do it again.Will keep a watch for more imfo.
