Any other WGTN riders thinking about attending the Port Nelson Street Races on January 2nd?
Would make a wicked days trip, perhaps stay one night in Nelson?
Any Takers?

well I'd say we will be going up on the 30th as there are a few rallies to catch up with... and back on the 3rd.... maybe 2nd but did that last year after the races and its a tiring day.
There is a room sorted out for you on these days too Joni, but I think your traveling buddy will only be up there for one night, which is a pitty as he could show you the area, truly awesome corner of the world.

Wouldn't go so far as to say that. But MrsB and I did a couple of laps of the track in the Suby GT last night. In between her yelling "SLOW DOWN!!!!" I was saying "Thank christ this corner (Vickerman/ Wildman intersection) isn't the FIRST corner- it's got two traffic islands and a roundabout and that big median strip may as well be a wall..."..... then D informed me I was going around the wrong way. Greaaaaat.:baby: Went thru scrutineering today, and as we left the race officials seemed to be doing a fair bit of head scratching about that first corner- they were standing down there 'discussing' it with a tape measure, cans of paint etc.

Another amusing event was finding out that Stanko (who is foolishly loaning me his RZ/FXR150 bucket) had a small mishap on the way up, which left the right hand side of the front tyre on 'my' bike with a substantial flat spot. And all the corners bar one are right handers. Greaaaaat.:baby:

But don't worry, I told them that it was your only one and you were born with it and they shouldn't pick on you just because you've got a fat arse.

The day started off a tad wetish/windy... but the rain went leaving the wind and odd sun showers and sunny patchs really was a weird weather day, but just right)
Bucket practice was late... like 45min on the dummy grid :spudwhat: but once under way all went well apart from Stanko whom, sorta took a couple a hay bales out (1st corner... a real bitch but ok)
Post classic practice, I rode the MT100 (early RS GP replica 1977) and found I had the grunt I needed to keep up... sweet bring on the racing

Race 1 buckets
I was on the CB125T and had a good run dropping back behind the front bunch (just wasn't the grunt to catch them)

Race 1 post classics
I rode the MT and had a good race being the 2nd bucket home and 1st KBer

Race 2 Buckets decided on the MT for the rest of the day so figgered it was time to show my skills off..... well as ya know I fuked that up good n proper (see above post)

Race 2 Post classics
Great fun being mixed up with the bigger noisie pre 82 bikes managed to be laped on the last lap by a GPZ1100 and Mk1 Guzzi, gave my CB125T to TonyB to race so as he could join in the pre 82 fun

Race 3 Buckets
Cant remember much bout this race but did battle it out with spud racer for a while.

Race 3 Post classics
More fun here and this time wasn't laped till the finish line were the Guzzi beat the GPZ :niceone:
Last race was the Buckets mixed with the real classics
Had my best start of the day here and thought this is it I'm going to get my arse over the line 1st.... but the bloody 2 stroker started missing and shit (too rich I was told) and was passed by the only chick in the field :slap: and then by TonyB :slap: :slap: followed by the rest of the feild... including spud Racer on my other bike :slap: :slap: :slap:

KBers racing were
Stanko
TonyB
Diesel Pig
Nipper
Spud Racer

To explain the above- number 34 is Tiffany Farnsworth. She kicked my arse too, so there you go girls- nothing to stop you from doing it too. Get out there and give it a go :niceone:

Righto-
I think I will always have fond memories of the 06 Nelson Port Races. Despite a few organisational glitches it was a bloody fantastic day. I think I will always regard it as my first 'real' race meeting- probably because it is the first time I have raced in front of spectators (other than the freinds and family of the racers). It was quite an experience, I didn't notice the spectators when I was racing, but on the cool down lap you have time to look about, and it was kinda strange to see them- especially when many of them were clapping or giving the thumbs up (probably out of sympathy in my case LOL). Personally I appreciated the gesture, especially when they most definitely haven't paid their hard earned cash to watch the likes of me wobble around the track.

The warmup was a tad frustrating to put in mildly. "Buckets on the dummy grid in 5 mins" was the call. So we got there. And waited. And waited. And waited. In the baking hot sun. Eventually we gave up and found some shade. And we waited. And waited. Stanko was so hot he went and stood in the beer chiller- I joined him. And we waited. And waited. I went into the bar and got a pint of ice cubes, which I quickly chewed up. And we waited. And waited. "We'll be ready to go in 5 mins". About 15 mins later there appeared to be some movement, so we went back out on the grid and FINALLY got underway- hot and dehydrated before we even started the day.

We knew that turn one was going to be a shit, so we tip toed around it. Earlier I had made the decision to take it reeeaaal easy in the practice, as I was riding an unfamiliar bike- we were running so late that there were already quite a few spectators there. I rolled out of the pits last and proceeded to tour around feeling like a bit of a tosser for going so slow. At the end of the first lap all the spectators around the corner were waving their arms- in my hot and dehydrated state I initially thought they were doing some sort of mock hero worship of one of their mates... then I realised somebody must have crashed- can't recall even seeing a flag marshall. So I gingerly rounded the corner to see Stanko frantically trying to bash his handlebar back into shape. Bugger! Briefly considered stopping before deciding that it wasn't safe and I needed all the practice I could get. Later in the pits we learned that Stanko's bike was out of action for the day. I offered his number 2 bike (which I was using) but he wouldn't hear of it.

The FXR150RZ is boringly reliable, so I had nothing to do but bake in the sun till race one, trying to replace some fluids.

Buckets Race 1
Lined up near the back and had a pretty crap race. Was obviously far too tense and having a lot of trouble with arm pump in my right arm. Was braking too early, cornering too slowly, not looking far enough ahead, holding on too tight, looking where I didn't want to go on occasion- the list goes on and on LOL.

They didn't even get through one round before lunch. We were assured that lunch would be taken to the flag marshals to ensure a quick stoppage, but it seemed to drag on forever. D offered me a spin on his CB125T in post classics and I eagerly agreed before he had a chance to change his mind.

Post Classics- Ye Gods how DOES D make that old thing go so fast?? Never mind the 1" long foot pegs and cramped riding position, the bloody thing appears to have a noisy rubber band as a power plant! Nailed the start and STILL ended up dead last- looked over my shoulder to check. The CB has shit power, but great brakes and handling (by my standards anyway). Nipper was in front of me on his bog standard GP125 and quite understandably was slower in the corners (they handle like a wheelbarrow full of water), but his bike had more go, so I had trouble getting by. I was being far too respectful and not pushing my advantages properly. In the end I managed to wind the old girl up and use two consecutive corners to go around the outside. For the rest of the race I lived in mortal fear of him blowing by under power. Was lapped by a few of the big boys. Came in feeling pretty bloody good- bloody hell slicks grip eh! Had a fairly massive dehydration headache by this time tho.

Buckets Race 2
This was a very quick turn around from the Post Classics- well it is when you're dopey enough to take your gear off like we did. Lined up on the dummy grid a tad flustered and with my head pounding like a jack hammer. Tried shutting my visor to block out the glare and just breating deeply to settle a bit. Worked a treat! Got a fantastic start, watched D almost loop the MT125gp once and then as I shot by he nearly did it again! Riding D's other bike seemed to help my riding on Stanko's much roomier FXR150RZ, and I was going much better. Can't remember much about it till the point where D on a charge from the back of the feild shot by braking into turn 1. After that I heavily revised my braking point LOL. Ended up dicing with SpudRacer, shooting under him at turn one in a block pass, and then he did the same to me at the last bend. I had another go at turn 1, but he pushed the point and I damn near T-boned him. Finished just behind him and D- head pounding but elated to have had a decent race. Think I might have got 10th.

Post Classics.
Another crap start saw me dead last again... from the 2nd row- looked over my shoulder to see an empty track and shook my head laughing. Was far less polite with Nipper when I went by. God knows where I finished.

Buckets Race 3.
Refused to take my gear off after the rush last time around. It was delayed by several minutes so I cooked. Can't win eh! They combined us with the Classics which seems to work really well. Got a good start and started dicing with Tiffany Farnsworth and a guy on a classic. He was holding us up in the corners and just had too much go in a straight line, pulling a good 100m on the start/finish straight. Nearly got Tiffany a couple of times. We finally got a really good opportunity to pass and she took it, but I saw what I thought were held yellows (actually oil flags held flat on to us so we couldn't see the stripes- GRR!) I damn near had to stop to avoid passing him. After that I lost momentum- Tiffany gained enough ground to stay ahead and I'm sure I could have too, but the chance never really came again. Got close a few times but on the final lap I buggered up somewhere or other and just couldn't get close enough. Noticed after a while that Tiffany had passed D, then the classic got by. I was definitely reeling D in for about 3 laps and I thought "Fucken hell, I'm gonna beat the old bugger!!" But then he slowed quite a bit and I shot past, highly pissed off that my victory would be so hollow...

Rode into the the pits with my head about to explode. Stanko directed me to the trailer and while he and MrsStanko loaded the bike on I stumbled around, wildly ripping my leathers etc off in a desperate attempt to cool down. Stanko pointed out that it looked like a two year old had undressed themsleves- my gear was spread over about 3 car parks....

So that was it. I had a fantastic time. After a break of a few months the racing bug has bitten again- HARD. Stanko has already graciously offered to lend his assistance in getting my GP125 sorted. Can't wait!

I just want to say a BIG thanks to Stanko and his wife for lending me the bike and their race fuel. And ditto to D for the loan of the CB- great wee bike, just needs a bit more power. And thanks to the organisers- it started badly but ended up running pretty smoothly. I'll definitely be back next year.

and before TonyB comes back I have some piccies.
Bit disappointed In Nelson from a spectators point of view: had heaps of trouble trying to get across the road and then get back again to the pits every couple of races, there seemed to bit very few oportunities to get across the track so a lot of people just crossed anywhere...bit frustrating for those of us trying to do it right. So I pretty much could only really take pics along the straight. Couldn't even walk around the outside of the track, blocked off at both ends of the straight.
In comparison to Wanganui which was damn good for the spectators....hopefully things maybe better organised next year, not much good if the spectators cant see a lot of the racing, doesn't do much to encourage them to go and watch it.
Anyway enough whinging...leave that for the others. :spudflip:

Lined up near the back and had a pretty crap race. Was obviously far too tense and having a lot of trouble with arm pump in my right arm.
Geez mate sounds like you don't do enough "exercise", I've never had that problem :msn-wink:

Good writeup man, think I'll have to make it there for next year.

Been busy as. But had a great day in Nelson. Chic n charge and I rode over the hill and back. Great racing. Well done all you KBers:niceone:

A bit slack that I didn't come into the pits and try to meet you all. Did catch up with Dangermouse, Rashika, and Diesel Pig though.
