The March Hare (in my opinion) is a better rally and I believe one of the largest in the South Island, so if you cannot make Glenorchy then this rally is the one to do. Glenorchy is a better not mention longer ride for us in chch.

Take away the ride to Glenorchy and I think it's only average but the setting is great, in fact I would say one of the best. Last year was a huge improvement on the year before that though.
Yeah, you're probably right D, it's not fair to compare them.

GO to Glenorchy, the ride is good and the setting great, unreal scenery, also being a smaller rally I find it more fun imho.:niceone:
March Hare site is bland, hot and flat, - and it's a long way from anywhere, the Glenorchy village is only 4 or 5 ks from the site and is itself a great spot.

And the drunks taking off from the Glenorchy pisser are a huge laugh.
Nothing like trying to impress a garden bar full of bikers and then making a complete cock of yourself.

definately be there for both of these rallies, haven't done the glenorchy one yet, altho have done a bit of tramping in the area. Love that part of the country :apumpin:

yeah i do luv the Vincent county site, very nice in the river there, under the trees, but haven't been able to get there for a few years as it tends to clash with the HOG rally...done a few of those now instead.
But would like to get there next year, will depend on finances as usual. :(

I know - I was there!
AND the preferred spot in the river was upstream as I noticed vast quantities of beeer etc being carried out to the river and being consumed therein -BUT I noticed that there were not a lot of people exiting the river to attend the port-a-loos!! (And I'm sure the river was a distinctive yellow tinge downstream of the camp)

Hey Scumdog, or anyone else, when is the "Off the Rails", I've never heard of that one. Magpie, Woodstock, March Hare are regulars for me, thinking of giving the Vincent a go this year, but never heard of Off the Rails. March Hare should be an even bigger turnout this year, being the 20th.
By the way this looks like a good site, I only heard about it recently. It's good to see a forum with good local support. Hard to believe the number of posts some of you guys/gals have.

As idb says, it's early April at a farm near Middlemarch, a smaller but nice rally - weather is starting to get cold then so wrap up (couldn't read the speed advisory signs 'cos there was too much snow stuck to them).

Excellant! Well not sure if we will be able to pick out your bikes cos it is a huge rally but will endeavour too.
Look out for a orange/white/black Buell, a Motoguzzi V11 Le Mans Nero corsa (black) and a Red R6 yamaha all together...that'll be us! Not sure if the GXR1000 will be with us or not at this stage...buggered knee not helping there. :(

through-over (dangerese) = paniers or saddlebags in english.
Tent will be able to strapped either on top, in front of or behind your pack rack bag, so see what will fit in the bag, i.e. bag, clothes, etc. You may be surprised what will fit in. Just for an overnighter I wouldn't worry about a tank bag unless you have a REALLY BIG makeup bag :spudflip:

Whatever you take make sure it is well attached - not just a pair of spaghetti-strength bungies.
A lost tent/sleeping bag is bad enough but one jammed into your rear wheel can really take the edge off your day!! (and at least cause a nasty stain in your knickers - assuming you're wearing some! )
Go to Mitre 10 or similar and get a couple of those light-weight ratchet tie-downs and use them, ( have a good suss-out how they work BEFORE you have all your shit precariously balanced on the back of you bike!) and use a couple of bungies as added insurance.

I'm heading down today, I hope it doesn't rain, my tent isn't waterproof I don't think, I guess thats what you get for $32 at the warehouse
I might shoot off to my parents and see if they have any waterproof ones in stock.
Looks bloody windy out there, I REALLY hope it's blowing towards timaru, otherwise it will be a LONG trip, the CG isn't the fastest bike at the best of time, with all the 125cc, so into the wind is a bit of a challange. Well at least I put a bikini fairing on it so I'll be able to tuck down behind the fairing.
I COULD potentially be going on a kawasaki KR250, if my friend gets the forks for his GPZ600 sorted.
I have the option of going with 2 groups, one is going straight down aparently (not a good look, pretty dangerous ride due to falling asleep and crashing, at least in your cage you can put on the radio) or inland, I think I might just take the inland route, depends on if I get the KR or not.
Hope to see all you's fullas down there, I'll be the fulla with the rat bike bucket racer CG125 (it's a classic!) or the lime green KR250 classic 80's sportsbike.
Sweet as!

This is what the weather is doing right now ...
Ashburton - Temp 14deg, Wind 12.9kph S, gusting 25.7kph, no rain
Timaru - Temp 15.6deg, Wind 20kph SSW, gusting 37kph, no rain
Omarama - Temp 10.6deg, Wind 6.1kph S, gusting 11.3kph, no rain
Dunedin - Temp 6.3deg, Wind 14.4kph SW, gusting 32kph, rain 1mm/hour
And here's the forecast ...
Today and Sat
Inland areas of Marlborough and Canterbury, also Nelson, Buller, Westland, Fiordland:
Mostly fine, however showers developing in Fiordland tomorrow afternoon and spreading into Westland and Buller from evening.
Otago and Southland:
Cold and showery, with strong or gale southerlies. Winds easing late today and showers clearing inland overnight and elsewhere in the morning. Southerlies strengthening again tomorrow evening with showers returning.
Sunday
South Island, mostly fine in the west and inland, but showers in Southland and along eastern coasts.
I'm away at 1600 today and have everything crossed that I can get the tent up without the rain. Don't care what it does after that - but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm a bit concerned about getting water in the carby though, put an XR200 carby on it and the rubber pipe doesn't attach anymore, I might sift into town and see if I can get a trumpet or somthing for it.

I'll get a nice high and dry spot sorted out for the tent, leaving the hollows for you :bleh:
I'll be well wrapped in leather, fleece, dririder, and a nice plastic one piece number over the whole lot. So I'll be warm & dry inside, it's just a bit of a hassle. It's gonna be fun getting the tent up too. We thought about putting it up in the beer tent then dragging it outside preassembled - but probably wouldn't be popular :oi-grr:

I'm heading for Hororata tonite then on to the Hare after lunch tomorrow. Good riding all and see you all there.

I left Chch at 1545 on Friday riding through rain squalls and bit's of tree blowing around down QE2 drive. No more rain once past Main North Rd, stong head wind all the way down and one brief shower (about 5 minutes worth). weather at the site was dry all weekend with sun and a cold but light wind.
Went out for a day ride on the Saturday with Plug, Clint640, Oldrider, my mate on the KLR and Mick who we bumped into on the day. Mick had an awesome KTM950, sounded great and man did it kick up some dust. Rode Myers Pass, Black Forest Rd, the Oldrider, my mate and I rode back via Hakataramea Pass and Myers Pass again. Plug and Clint640 went back to the site via MacKenzie Pass. Mick went his own way back to Chch. Around about a 300km day ride - great fun.
Woke to blue sky and no wind today. Breakfast at McDonalds Timaru, turned inland at Winchester and took the twisties home. Home at 1330.
Overall the weather turned out way better than predicted. You missed a great weekend Transalper.

Ohhh yeah the KB team weren't on there best behavour this rally.
Left later than planned as a somewhat rather cold southerly was pounding down on us, so those that hadn't already left and headed inland, shot off straight there vis S/H1.
Weather dried up and it wasent to bad a day. Up went the tents, off came the booze caps/lids and we went wondering.
Well it was Speedie's 1st rally and she seemed to be enjoying it, only one last thing she had to do to complete loosing her rally virginity and that was to enter the wet T comp. Didn't happen tho as we all decided that the other contenders wouldn't stand a chance so SG stood down.
However...... Speedie was now starting to disbehave, not like Shaz, Rashika's mate that was on a B12, she had been seen snogging on the dance floor with an unknown bloke and had disappeared....... you guessed it
Speedie however was just coming on form, she wondered off to get some tucker... came back from the food tent and said "here ya are lads.... eat up it was all free!"
It seems that the fella that was behind the counter (now with huge dumbarse smile) had said to SG....'show us ya tits and its free' :spudwhat:
Silly twit of the day has to go to flying DutchMan...... 1st up he decided that the new engine in his bike needed a wind up... so up onto the burnout pad he went
Now at this point I had to say that I didn't think a 30 something HP 250 would be able to cut the cake with the HD's etc that had already been up......
Ohhhhh.... how wrong I was, into 4th gear and 17,000rpm the CBR went, FDM grinning from ear to ear and starting to gag on the smoke.
Tyre blew people cheered I thought, twit, and and FDM cleaned up best burnout.
Now thats not why FDM gets the silly twit award for MHR 06..... no no no, Up on the dance floor the girls were putting on the moves, and FDM was dancing with a very hot slim blonde chick which soon had her legs wrapped round his waist..... but then he went to another chick... well old tart that didn't even come up to his knees, boggied a bit then went back to the slightly disgruntelled blonde bit.
More boggie wee peck on the check and ZZR, Jimmie, beemer69 and myself thought the fuker was in tonight.....
BUT no FDM in his pissed state of mind dropped her walked up to a "guy" gave him a hug.... well... what the blonde do?? stormed of the floor grabbed her jacket and pissed off..... FDM... you bloody silly twit
Back to Speedie... well FDM was getting a tad hyped and was bumping a couple of pissed nutes that were just standing on the dance floor smoking a hooter.
They were starting to take offence so SG stepped in and swapped places with him... well LOL in the next few moments, the pissed grump, had a very sore foot, brused rib and damn near KO'ed.... SG kept on dancing:apumpin:
(mental note: dont fuck with SG!)
Thats bout it off ta bed we went and crashed out.
Sweet ride home great weather and now Its KB time.... :2thumbsup to the KB group great time asusual.

Now that my memory is coming back from last night, it might be able to correct Ds recollections. While yes there a blond chick, a very hot english blond chick, and yes she was getting quite friendly. But rather suddenly turned a cold shoulder on learning that I didn't ride a Harly. Maybe I should lied a little.... "come back here and I'll show you it". I tried to convince her but to no avail. What the hell is it? does she think all men need vibrating penis extensions?
As for the grandma she latched onto me & decided be down on the ground was the best place to be & foot tripped me (at least thats my story!). I then proceeded to crawl away as fast as possible. You gotta watch out for those oldies. And as for that guy - he offered! I was going to chicken out, but I didn't even get a chance to - must have scared him something chronic! Didn't see him again.

well, all back safe and sound...didn't think we were going to get there at all but managed to convince them all that YES it WAS fine down south..after a phone call down south to a relie who said "rain? What rain?" and that was enough for me!
So I started out...in the the pissing rain I might add, off to speedys place to pick her up and make sure all looked good with her gear, which it was of course ;)
Then we both left to the meet up point...in the pissing rain Again... and meet up with the rest of the crew, which had diminished somewhat from earlier expectations. A couple had left earlier as planned and a few decided to go later. So it was up to Dangerous and Beemer89 to look after all the girls on the bikes... Speedy, Moi, SuziQ and my mate Shaz. Altho we did also have good road support in the form of 30UTD who had been banned from mounting his bike for a while to allow his knee to heal, and that has been reinforced by his lovely wife, so he had to follow in the car.
Left Rolleston ...in the rain I might add... and finally left the rain behind only a few kms down the road, and it turned into a damn nice trip. The sun came out and we finally started getting into the ride. Took the short road down and arrived at the site about 2pm, tents up (with a few helpers to get speedys up) and time to relax and meander around the site.
Pic 1-2: the girls having a pit stop at timaru mcds on the way down, and the boys, being joined by flyingdutchman to try to boost the numbers.
Lots of bikes in the bike show including my fav: a converted X1 lightning (pic 4-6) that used to be owned by a mate, and now has an S&S 1638CC motor in it along with a few other changes so it is barely recognisable as an X1, also done by the same guy who did my bike, hense the very similar paintwork...Check it out BB!
A few others were impressive: the 3 seater trike being one(does tours in Kaikoura; pic 3)
The evening went pretty much as dangerous said, the band was great and we just danced the night away...awesome! I love it when there is good music, and I can really get into the groove...even ole Dangerous got up there and showed us a move or too....and no it wasn't on some chick, he ACTUALLY can dance! :msn-wink:
We all ended the night starring at the nightsky and having very deep and meaningful discussions about the important stuff in life like..." where the fk did all those stars come from" and such like...awe inspiring stuff

Was a pretty good rally, met a few kiwibikers- Rashika, Speedygirl (who I have already met) and dangerous. Also met Farque again.
Put the mighty honda in the bike show, got runner up best rat, would have thought I would have taken it out, but there was a mighty suzuki FA50, that took it out, but mine was way better- no front guard, bikini fairing held on by cable ties, excessive use of cable ties, 100 mph tape and insulation tape, some pants cut up and used as a seat cover, crash damage, and no warrent or rego. I guess it was the new tires which got me.
Was definatly a LONG and boring ride down there, as went straight down, inland is fuck all better on the way back, you just get about 2 kilometres of corners, and they aint that tight either.
Left my keys in the bike near the bonfire on saturday night and some cunt stole it, took them off him and told him to fuck off, would have smacked him, but I aint very good at fighting, it was alright though, because I found a whole group of honda CG riders from christchurch! They went and grabbed their CG's and we went and did some mean donuts and burnouts wheelies, fuck it sounded awsome with 3 thumpers going nuts with glowing exhausts!
Also got a nice lass to stay the night with me which was good, she rode a mean FXR150, a bit faster than my rapid road rocket though, but thats what you get though, after a few more mods to my powerful honda CG and she'll be hussing.
I was really stoked about winning the runner up rat in the bike competetion as I got a $10 petrol voucher! FUCK YEAH! This allowed me to get home as I had spent all my money on beer.
Bike only broke down a couple of times, which was pretty good, first the overflow tube in the float bowl of the carby broke off, making all the petrol piss out of the float bowl onto the ground, was wondering why my petrol consumption was so high! But I got a bit of vacuum hose, jammed that on the drain nipple, cut a bit off a tent peg and jammed that in the vacuum hose and she was right as rain.
Secondly was a bit of a safety issue, the nut which stops the swing arm bolt from coming out vibrated loose and fucked off somewhere, so I just wrapped a bit of insulation tape around the thread and it was pretty good, on the way back though, stopped off at mitre ten to see if they had a nut, of course they only had a course thread so that wouldn't work. Luckely they were really helpful there and suggested using a split pin and washer. They had a drill and bit so I drilled a hole in the bolt, put the washer on and put a 4mm split pin though, only costed me 30 cents and was mint as! This left me with $1.75 so I could go to maccas and get a hamburger, managed to convice the girl to give it to me for $1.75 insted pf $1.80! That was great.
Went back inland with the CG gang, one CG was two up WITH luggage, which must have been a bit of a mission, they are not that great for touring by yourself, I think they are designed for zipping around hong kong or somthing, not 2 person touring, they're pretty economical, got back to christchurch on 6 litres no worries.
Was a great time though, would do it again any time.

Hmmm, I see that the arm on the iron biker at Tarras is still on the ground.
Got a pop riveter ZZR?

Great photos.
Why does Clint still have his hat on when it's dark? Is he afraid someone might see his helmet hair?

Me misbehave??!!! Never!!:shake: and what free food????:innocent::whistle: must have been someone else :bleh:
But what an awesome 1st rally!!! The only downside is that I went looking for my tent and it took about 30 mins to find the damn thing!!!
So I thought it was best to stay put when I finally located it!!
Thanks guys for making my 1st rally a memory to keep!! I look forward to the next one with great anticipation :ride:
It took me about 2 hours to find my tent 2 years back , then I had to get out quick for a chunder , problem was couldnt find the door so had to use my knife and make a door, my mates told me to throw the tent in the fire but i still use it. Now I always make sure I can fing my torch.

Behold the KBr's and guest rider Quick Mick and his fabulous machine the KTM950. Boy was I impressed by that thing.
Sounded great with matching performance.
I never even saw his dust! Just the little suggestions of a few "Oh Shit" moments left in the gravel here and there and he was gone! :spudwhat:
Who was that masked man? The KTM is in the middle of the group. Pic taken on Te Akatarawa Stn road. Cheers John.
I bumped into Mick at Eric Woods today. He said he was doing 190kph down those shingle roads  No wonder we never saw him again. I got his contact details off him too as he's keen to come on some more rides like that.

Definately ask him about it, i'd love to see the full quality on the TV version and wonder what else like that he might have from his camera.

One of these you mean :gob: This was under the bridge in the pics I posted earlier. I saw a live one bouncing up the hill about 100m down the road from here on the way back from the ride at around 7pm that evening :doobey:
