Honda CBR250rr 1992

My Friend has been working her butt off getting my bike ready for the Toy Run and my bike refuses to turn over!!!
I have one day to get wof and rego and be all ready for Saturday morn!!!

We think it may be the spark plugs as everything else has been looked at. Any help would be soooo much appreciated.

What part of auckland are you in and have you tried crash starting?
Does the starter motor go? Lights on the dash show up when you turn the ignition on?

Im In Glen Eden...I have tried crash starting, Jump starting. Yes all the lights and everything else works.

Its not spark plugs if it won't turn over. I would say check that its in neutral (common mistake) and the side stand is up. Failing that, check out the sensor on the side stand as well as the starter motor.

Have you tested for spark?

Have you tested for spark?

The bike refuses to turn over, nothing to do with spark (yet)

No. My biggest problem is I am a learner and I have no knowledge at all with mechanics of her. I think that the spark plugs are a pain in the butt to get to!

Do you have a multimeter? Can you get a battery voltage reading?
Has it been sitting for a while?

kels

We are getting her to turn over and she is firing but she just can't quite get there.

Yes she has been sitting for a while...we put the battery on charge overnight. She seems to be ok in that department now. I have emptied the tank and put in new petrol and we have cleaned out the carbs.

Thanks Sniper...She is definately in neutral and gone through quite a bit of other things...brain is now over heating!!!!

When you "won't turn over" do you mean that nothing at all happens when you push the start button? Or does the motor make a whirring sound but not start?

It's a four cylinder, it is very unlikely that all 4 plugs would be so bad as not to fire at all.

Don't bite me, but are you absolutely certain that the engine kill switch is in the Run position?

If nothing at all happens when you press the button, but the lights work, most likely is a blown fuse.

EDIT. Missed the earlier post about petrol

If you have put new fuel in, you will need to turn the fuel tap to prime (assuming it is the usual jap vacuum sort)

EDIT AGAIN - Questins being answered while I was posting. If it's firing but won't pick up, yes could be plugs. Or fuel. Sometimes it can take a LONG time cranking to get the fuel through all the carbs.

Devil
1st December 2005, 14:42
Are the fuel hoses clear? if you put it out from the carbs do you get fuel running through them with the fuel tap switched on? (The fuel tap is switched on, right? :D)

You need to make that clearer then. Its more than likely spark. Have you checked if there is fuel getting to the motor?

kels

Thanks heaps guys I am going to go and try a few more of the things that you have suggested and I will let you know how I get on. Sorry for not being so clear on what is not happening with her.

battery could still be poked, try it with a car battery jump start styles and see if that helps
EDIT: when i got mine from japan it wouldnt start, would turn over but that stopped soon and even after charging the battery it wouldn't fire, turned out i needed a new one

even though you charged it the power in your batter might not be enough to form a decent spark

Race down to the gas station and buy a can of Engine Start or Brake Clean. Spray a little into the airbox (with the filter removed) while cranking it over.

Its sounding like either fuel or spark to me. Check the plugs arent fouled, and check that you've got a good flow of fuel to the carbs. If there is a filter, you might want to flush it out.

Sweet, check for the fuel filter and tap - they may have picked up some gunk off the bottom of the tank.

And if you make it out on the ride, be sure to rock up and say hi :niceone:

If the engine is flooded try winding it over with full throttle and no choke. This gets maximum airflow through the motor and will usually dry out wet plugs sufficiently to fire. I still think you should try the solvent in the airbox though.

... bet you it was either....a) flooded..... b) kill switch was on...c) carbs were all dirty and it wasnt getting fuel...

ps. the correct way to unflood a motor is...kill switch to off ....then wind it over with no choke

Cheers : MA

No problem Kelly, happy to help anytime i'm free from work, was only 10 minutes late in the end, wasn't really a law abiding drive to work though lol.

Bike had been sitting around for a few months, combination of a few things, weak battery, motor ended up flooded, fouled plugs etc, after bump starting it up and down the neighbours drive a few times she came to life but still sounding sickish, wasn't running on all four, cylinder four was the culprit (easy way to check this for the newbs out there is touch each header pipe, one will be alot colder than the rest) pulled the plug still had spark, little dirty, gave it a clean, chucked it back in, but still not right, unfortunatly kinda ran outta time to whip the radiator off and check the rest of em, so hoping that was the only real issue with it and needing a good run to clear itself out a bit, if not dont know could be a valve??? Will see.

Kelly if you dont get it sorted and you dont end up going on the Ride, i'm doing a mates fork seals on his FZR250 on Sat and have nothing planned for Sunday, so either you can bring the bike here or i can come to you and finish the job a bit more proper, you got my number.

Hi ya Bruce :wavey:
Your soooo cool!
Thanks to you... I SHALL BE GOING ON THE RUN!!!!!

I got a wof for her and got her rego. So shes all legal at long last! Slapper kept dying at me at the lights and intersections! I played around with the idle and she seems to go alright for a while. Would you like me to grab those tools to make a shitty job a tad easier?

Once again Bruce thanks so much for all of your help! :not:
