If I'm to race a 250GSX, I'm assuming I'll need alot of money a Mechanic and some balls.
An averagee 250 puts out x amount of power, what would be the difference between that of a mod race 250. ( just generalisation) as I am am not that clued up with the mechanical jargon YET :o

To the racers out there how and where did you start?

The sticky thread at the top of this forum "Going racing -heres what you need" has all the info concerning license, gear, bike prep.

Your bike can race in Streetstock which is where alot of people start.

Doing a few trackdays is the first thing you really should do just to see if you really like it. Theres a CD touring club one coming up soon at Manfield.


Racing really only gets expensive if you fall off. On a small bike a set of tyres will last you for many meetings. Expenses are more getting your bike to the track and entry fees. Trackdays and testdays you get alot more tracktime which is what you need when first starting out.

And talk to Velox as shes thinking of having a go soon I think.

As GarryH said look in the going racing part. But make sure you do come racing!! it will be something you will never regret if you do and there are mixed skill levels in StreetStock so there will be competiton for you :yes:

You can enter your GSX in streetstock at Manfeild. It isn't as competitive as the rest of the bikes but the streetstock class is all about learning to race anyway. Just don't go faster than your skill level like I did as you end up wrecking the bike and can't contine the rest of the season

An RG150 is usually the best bike to start on, but a 250 inline four would also be good.

I think your GSX250 may be ok, but would you really want to race your road bike??
Things can turn to shit out there VERY easily!
If you can find a cheap 150 stroker or 250 4cyl, that would be the way to go.

I stated on a GSXR400 (my old road bike), That was great to race with.
And I was lucky enough not to bin it too badly.
I learnt hard braking, cornering lines, race craft etc, without too much stress.

I'm all for encouraging racing, and admittedly slightly envious that you're in a position where you can contemplate it, but I strongly recommend NOT racing your GSX250. Reason being, if you're an even remotely competitive person, you'll get real sick of the lack of power very quickly. And I gather they're not the best handling bike on earth either - but that was just someone else's opinion, I never actually thrashed my other half's one hard enough to find out.

Get an RG or whatever Sparky was on about. Don't waste a road bike.

Don't race your road bike becasue you WILL crash and it WILL cost a lot of money.

Buy an RG150, KR150, ZXR250 or CBR250RR specifically for racing.

It's all very easy, really. Buy some leathers, gloves, boots, a bike, new tyres, oil and filter, brake pads and fluid, check chain and sprokets, replace fork oil, drill and tie sump bung and tie oil filter.

Buy a licence off mnz, pay entry fees and fill out disclamer.

Roll up to start line, shit yourself senseless and gas it!

They're a horrible bike on the best of days.
I do like Suzuki but I have to say, They really let themselves down there!
The handling is horrid, the acceleration feels like a sewing machine pushing you, and the absolute top speed is my everyday cruising speed.

I'd suggest a two stroke 150 as Martin suggested, otherwise a 2-stroke 250 for some awesome fun!

i went out to the track the other day and 3 people let me out in the brakes to have a play.. cost?... nothing!!!
i had the track to myself did about 20 laps all up but it made me want to get back into it!!!... on MY bike ( so that when i bin it .... i want have to say sorry to anyone ..... cept the ones i run over..:lol: )
