View Full Version : The irony of an accident.

Every day, rain or shine I ride my bike to and from work in town. Yesterday I had an appointment so I decided to take the car. At this point I will fess up to all you 4x4 haters, and admit I drive a Hilux in my 'spare time'...

So I'm on my way out of town, crawling at pretty much 5k max in the traffic, when suddenly I'm subjected to one of those sickening, glass breaking, crunching, noises and the surging forward of said Hilux... I'd been hit, in the rear...

During those split seconds I glanced in my rear view mirror to see two helmets! Oh shit! I suddenly developed that churning stomach feeling as I knew, somehow, that the two helmets I'd seen were not the ones that had hit me.

Well, two bikes pulled over to the left and I did the same, another bike pulling up behind. It seems that a young guy on L plates, I'm not sure of the make of bike, had clipped another biker, then rear-ended me!!

Anyway all was OK and no-one was injured but for the grace of god! The younger guy must have had all his birthdays in one go, as he had got away with a busted headlight and some slightly dented pride! I had some light damage to the rear bumper. The two other bikers who stopped were very good and were happy to swap details as witnesses. Neither were KB'rs as I did a bit of a name drop.

Anyway, I thought I'd relate this story just to show how life can turn things around.

If the young guy who hit me is a KBr and happens to read this post, then you are a bloody lucky lad!! Take it easy mate life is too short.

It was lucky he hit you, not some 4x4 prick taking her kids to school. She would've bleed him dry to pay for that broken light

True, I was pretty easy with him, I'm sure he felt bad enough. Especially when his father pulled up behind us!!

 :killingme

Lucky is right - better to hit a 4WD than be hit by one! Glad you're okay too.

What was his excuse?

"I didn't see you!"

I know there's been a bit of piss-taking about that statement in recent times, but what would you prefer someone to say?

"I did see you, made a mental reference to the give way rules in page 42 of the 'New Zealand Road Code', decided you had right of way, then proceeded to drive into you anyway. Here's my insurance details..."

At least "I didn't see you" is as close to an admission of guilt that you can get (most insurance contracts have a clause that will void your insurance if you admit guilt), and is much better than having some twat start abusing you and taking the high road when they were the person who did in fact fail to give way or otherwise break a road rule and cause the accident.

I'd actually prefer they didn't hit me to be honest!

There has been many an accident where this would have been the more honest approach . . .

Well, I think there was much more going on than I saw. He'd already clipped one of the other bikers - who had a pillion too, before he'd stopped on my rear. :slap: Infact the biker he'd clipped was the one I thought had hit me as he was the one closest to the rear window at the time.

I think all involved were very lucky and I hope he's learned a lesson, or two...

I'd prefer they said, "I did see you, but I'm such an incompetent tosser because my Dad strained me through a blanket at conception, that I was was unable to make a decision or take any action to avoid you".
