Motu

This talking on the internet stuff is facless - and some people are not as they seem....some may be boosting their selfimportence, some maybe hiding something of themselves they don't want us to know - so who are we really? is the person you meet the one you thought you were going to see?

Motu is not who you will find if you are lucky enough to see me in person - in real life I am shy and retiring,a quiet guy who thinks that he who talks least learns most.I have been involved in bikes for many years now,I've met a lot of people, some are well known,I've listened in to important conversations - but they don't know me from a bar of soap,my name means nothing,my face less (I hope) I am a slow thinker, but conversations move quickly - by the time I've thought up a responce, they have moved on.I don't like to argue in public,I'm slow witted and can't put up a good case,so sometimes it appears I agree with their view, but I'm just trying to get out of interacting.

So who is Motu? - he is how I think, but not act - not the real me...but part of me,not made up...but built from my experiances, layers of different opinions, some conflicting, but all fitting together. This internet thing allows me to think of a reply, bring back a quote from a few days ago I want to coment on,do some research...um,check spelling, write some scathing nasty reply, then delete it.

These forums allow me to get my thoughts out, something normaly reserved for me alone - my thinking is sarcastic, witty, scathing and always on the otherside...I think every story has another view and will often take an opposing side just to present their case - I may not believe in it,but it needs to be presented to balance the point of view.

You may get to see me - but maybe not Motu....if I call you a wanker to your face and suggest if your gunna ride a girls bike why not paint it pink...then you may have just caught a glimps.

The net is good for letting you marshal and arrange your thoughts - if you want to!
And it's fun, trying to picture the person on the other end of a net persona.
Meeting them, can be a real let down.............or not.
All part of lifes rich tapestry.

Motu: make sure you introduce yourself to me at Pukemanu - or you can let me try to guess who you are if you like, but you must 'fess up over dinner if I haven't guessed correctly by then!

The net persona thing is interesting and as you say Motu only a small glimpse
of the real person. It's a bit hard to fit 30-40 or more years into something like this. Most of the opinions posted are only today, some times having very little to do with what one thought or felt in another time.
I guess some people create a personality that does not exsist in the real world but all in all I think most of the people on this site are just presenting a slightly louder version of themselfs.Anyway mate you were pretty much what I exspected when I met you.
And now I have to go west an pick up another bloody horse.
Cheers.

Neat post. I definately find it way easier to take part in discussions online than in real life. I'm another quiet person.
I just wonder what the "real person" is though. The face we present to people in real life meetings is another persona as well, as is the one we present to people close to us, or how we act when we're all alone.

Thank God for computers and the Internet, which allow us to be whatever we want. We can create a persona, an identity and fulfill all our fantasies. We can be handsome, witty, young, sociable and irresistibly sexy.
Who would have thought that in real life I'm a miserable old curmudgeon with absolutely no sense of humour?

I did one too. I really hate Internet Tough-Guys. You know, "I can bench press 300 kilo and if we meet I'll kick your ass!" They are invariably 12 years old, weigh about 45 kilo and burst into tears when you introduce yourself.

I wear a flip up helmet with a clear visor, so I can pick my nose at will whilst riding. Only thing I prefer in driving a car to riding a bike is you can sometimes aim the booger from a car. It just gets whipped off your finger by the wind when riding. I use a clear visor because I like to do "Foggy" eyes at people when they piss me off.

No secrets here, that's why I just use my real name on-line.

Motu if you've been on all the other Adventure rides in the Southern North Island I've probably met you already (I missed the original 1991 Pukemanu but have done them all since then) and I know that you know 4skins who I've known since he did the first Capital Coast though I had heard of him before that. I see him at times for lunch with Lynda where all us quiet types (yeah right!!) get together.

I'm a dedicated biker but many would say I am a part timer, that's because I spread my time around a lot. I ride when I feel like riding and do other stuff when I feel like doing that instead. I'm into the fun and never like to overdo anything or else I would get sick of it. When I competed I never liked practicing.

There do seem to be a few people on this site that have very informed opinions/ideas, and that tends to make me stay out of some of the more "technical" discussions for fear of saying something especially stupid.

But, all in all, I'd say that I talk and behave in the same manner that I would if I was talking face to face. I don't believe in being rude or obnoctous (sp)
just because your on the net.

Saying that... I still wear a tinted visor!!

The atavar is really me. Friends have for 24 years been trying to see the real me, that is clean shaven. Though I have nothing to hide just dont like the shaving rash....
What you see is what you get with me. I give an honest opinion and make no bones about my faith or views. Likewise I can accept others for who they are. If one wants to dialogue I try my best to address the issues not the person. Everyone is created special in God's eyes. How many others have come to realise that not everything is black and white?
As quoted by Motu "so who are we really?...." Only time will show who we really are, what sort of person we are that lies behind this computer screen.
Anyway have a great day and look out for me at the Cambridge Toy Run... Black XV, White open face helmet, and of course my black beard that is not so black these days.

A great post Motu :niceone:

I am online who I am in real life, well I hope so! Those of you who have met me correct me if I'm wrong please! I think for shy people maybe the net is a good place for them to get a chance to say how they feel, instead of being shouted down by the more articulate or quick thinking. I like the net b/c I'm quite a social person & like the chance to speak to people from other parts of N.Z and sometimes overseas.

Of course in saying that I agree with Erik too - we are all slightly different in different situations, the way I'd speak with my 80+ Grandmother would be quite different to the way I'd speak with my Uni mates or sister and Motu you may be surprised that others may in fact meet you & recognise you for who you actually are...did that make sense?

Everyone I have met off KB's has been who I thought they'd be or maybe I've met them with an open mind, I've learnt building up preconceived notions of people is stoopid.

Love the thread Motu. Great responses also. Jim2, as usual you are very entertaining :D

I'm new to 2 wheels, though did have a wee Honda 100S (edited from Suzuki, doh!)) trail bike at High School (farrrrm girrrrl). Came in here to observe & learn. Been suckered into defensive mode a few times but that's how I am sometimes away from my laptop - reactive. Even yelled at a tin top today... idiot was riding his clutch at the lights at the top of The Terrace and started rolling back on me. Then stopped with no signal in the middle of the road after turning right at the lights. So today I had no patience. Was so p*ssed off that I worked too hard at the gym and almost puked.

I think the majority of us in here are almost as we are in the "real" World.

I have a mental picture of a gloved finger endeavouring to dive up a nostril with slim hope of success -- I don't recall your nostrils being unduly cavernous, your nose excessively pliable or the Spidi "booger picker" being fitted to your gloves...

You'll have to demonstrate this magnificent dexterity at some stage...

Thanks for the replys - I'm happy to see so many who are real on the net and life.I think talking on the net has been tainted by the stories of 14 or 84 yr olds being someone they are not.On a common interest board like this I don't think it could happen - but we'll keep a watch out eh?

You are right erik, and it never occoured to me - I am different to everyone I meet...we adjust ourselves to every situation - I may try to chat up a cute blonde, but wouldn't use the same approach to a gang member!

So all the different me's are just facets of the complex being I am - and here's me thinking I was a simpleton.Meeting Jackrat held no surprises for me,I had none for him,so as others say,the personality comes out anyway....if we have one that is!

An interesting thread you started here Motu.

When I joined the site, I called myself my real name as I didn't really know what the site was about, and didn't post for a few months.

In hindsight, I would have still called myself my real name, as I (climbing onto the high moral ground here) would like to think that I wouldn't say anything to/about anyone anonomously that I wouldn't say to their face.

The philosophy I try my best to live by (I am only human, after all) is to live and let live, and to never knowingly do anything to harm/hurt anyone. I am pretty much a "what you get is what you see" person, I know that some people don't like my style, but that's fine. Sometimes I speak before I think, and that has gotten me in the crap a few times, but I'm getting better at keeping foot-out-of-mouth as I'm getting older. I am who I am, the way I am, and if people can't handle me then that's their prerogative and that's fine with me. (Steps back onto lower ground.)

I have found with the KB'ers that I either already knew, or have since met, that on the site they are the same as how I know them in real life, or who I expected them to be. (Not sure if that really makes sense....)

Some really good thoughtful comments on this thread. Thanks for starting it Motu.

I'm trailer trash too, don't owe anyone and have swum upstream the whole bloody way - if they do it that way...then I do it this way.4 kids all born at home, none gone or going to school, don't eat meat or dairy products,I have my own beliefs and keep them to myself, they are mine ,not your's,I'll debate, but I won't argue - you won't convert me to your way,I won't talk you into mine.My family comes from the far north, strongly Irish, sometimes it shows. My name is spelt the Irish way, mostly it was changed to English,or Prodestant spelling, our family are the only ones spelt this way.On my mothers side is one of the oldest settler families in the country, the first pakeha child born in NZ is linked to this family, not directly in my line, just one of those many branches.Strangely on both sides is a Portugese who jumped ship, not the same one of course, maybe there were a lot of them.I don't know what the hell is going to happen in my life for the future - and frankly....I...don't....care.I live for the day,and enjoy them all.

I named one of my boys Jack, after my Grandmothers second husband, and because I never met a Jack I didn't like,an unusual name at the time, next thing ya know it's the most common name in the book!....Oh,at one job they used to call me the Ratcatcher on account of how I looked!

to ask Do you agree with ST Mel and believe the jews are to blame for Christs death.Let the Bible speak for itself:

Matthew 27:20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 ¶Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Verse 25 was intentionally left out of the movie by Mel for obvious reasons.

But ultimately Holly Roller is right- we are all to blame for the death of Christ!

NO I do not believe that the Jews are to blame for Christs death. What heresy is this.....
I thought you were a Christian....
Zealot....

The blame for Christs death lies squarely with us, our Book states that Jesus died for us to free us from our wrong doings and perversions (we paticipate in perversions because we are addicted to them, I was once a "pervert" "alcoholic", "suicidal") and enable to return to the relationship with God that was once but is possible through the death and resurection of His Son.
Why? Because we are created in the image of God.
And satan, the devil, whatever name one wishes to give him hates God and that image. The more he can pervert that image the more we become just another sick puppy unable to help ourselves.

Why? Because we are created in the image of God and satan, the devil, whatever name one wishes to give him hates God and that image. The more he can pervert that image the more we become just another sick puppy unable to help ourselves.
Any way GTG
The guys will be waiting for meYou are correct HR! I've edited my previous post.

God was invented by man to give excuse to his failings
Tell that to God when you meet Him your judgment- you will be a sorry individual then, well, even more sorrier than the individual you are now!

You may make a joke of your profession you pervert, but it's you and the other sex-worker scum out there that contribute towards the degredation of our society and a general breakdown of the family and the marriage union.

Btw I strongly suggest that you stay away from any Christian clientele, for God will bring judgement on you and your house for helping his children to fall by the wayside!

Your kind was executed in the old testament for practising such immoral, perverse acts as you claim to indulge in.

And this Zed is prime example of part of the reason I stopped going to church & am not a christian anymore. :disapint: Too much narrow minded blatant hatred of those who are outside what the christian church believes.

How about we think about how many wars have been started because of religion???? I am a firm believer in people believing and having the right to belive in their belief (man that sounds weird) But i am also a firm believer that you should not impose beliefs on people that do not believe in your belief (Christians are renouned for it, just look at the Crusades, and Missionaries that go to colonies)

(No offence meant at any one who is religious)

I joined this forum to discuss bikes. While this particular thread was logged under "Off Topic" too often I feel that I'm being preached to. Getting more than a little sick of it and will probably ultimately turn me off coming in here.

I've belonged to a motorsport forum for a couple of years and can honestly say not once has religion entered into any threads.

I don't have any religion based beliefs. I just get on with enjoying my life, without being told how to live my life. That's not to say I live a dodgy lifestyle, far from it. I have to agree with Two Smoker (even if he sounds like the Aussie comedians interviewing Juan Pablo Montoya - Juan, one, won!).

Scooters have small wheels and a short wheelbase, both are often blamed for the poor handling,I just wonder how they do in real life. (I like scooter handling,it's different,so I'm into it)

I used to go to that forum, but lost the URL when I changed computers.

1. Add me to your ignore list (you will never be bothered by what I say again)

2. Don't read the threads about God.

I stayed away from your filthy joke thread so you should do the same with things that offend you!

This wasn't a religious thread to start off with and I believe in this case you started the ball rolling by name calling, also I posted a caution on the dirty jokes thread so that others had the option of not reading if they didn't want to.

Just spent a pleasant few days crusing the South Waikato, visting folks an such.Managed to avoid a few of the more outspoken family members that I have never got on with,an in the process got to thinking about this subject and the site in general.I know a few people that have signed on and then seldom if ever take part in discussion ect.I now think Iv'e worked something out about those of us who do take part and keep things flowing,as opossed to those that don't.The one thing that stands out about a lot of us that use the site is that most of us consider ourselfs to be fairly quite in person.
On the other hand the guys I know that don't even like the site are all big mouths. One thing Iv'e been told by a guy that don't like us at all,is that he always gets talked down and would like to punch a few heads.
Needless to say that guy is a total control freak and all round mummys boy.
So it seems to me that to take part in something like this, a new set of soical skills is reqiured, seems like the big mouth, violent, control freak types don't have a place here, because nobody gives a fuck how much they big note em' selfs. It don't work.So I guess that makes the rest of us the "nice guys".

Interesting comment Jackrat. I guess without the face to face thing no one can look intimidating and controlling and they can only see what you write.

However, as an aside I know years back when we first got e-mail at work people seemed to get into also sorts of e-mail wars because they would over-react, read between the lines and stuff and send back ever more abusive replies usually copying them to damn near everyone in the address book. As the boss of some of these guys I'd have to step in and cool them down and say things like "pick up the phone and call him" because usually in proper one on one conversation a lot of the bullshit and misunderstandings would evaporate especially if people would use words like "OK I was just asking" and the big one "sorry I didn't mean it like that". Another simple rule was if an e-mail thread got up to five links (i.e. original note plus four replies) it was time to break it off and make the phone call.

As for me, well I'm a kind of quiet but talkative chap and I don't offend easily.

Well, I wear a tinted visor, but only because I kept breaking sunglasses under my helmet while commuting. Riding into the sunrise and sunset, wrong way both ends of t'day. Ho hum. When one is astride a 150, 'looking like a badass' isn't quite on the benefit list.

In real life I'm probably even more inclined to silliness and sarcasm than I am online.

words are words

excuses are excuses
performance is reality

This online stuff guves me a chance to participate in conversations that normally I'd miss - I'm really deaf so my circle of bike riding aquaintances is pretty small, less than half a dozen people who understand that I can be very difficult to converse with and who are prepared to make the extra effort.

Here I can "listen in" to any conversation and add my 2 cents worth. That is worth far more than most would understand.

In case anyone wonders about the userid, Pete is my name and the number is the employee number I had at IBM, and it just sort of stuck.

I have never wondered who the person is behind the screen. It is an interesting thought though. Perhaps the reaosn why I have never gone down this particular road may have to do that most of my forum posts go to the USA and as such it is highly unlikely that I will ever meet these people. I must admit that the posters signature is usally a good indication of a little about the person behind the screen. I know that there is one here who is a 'long time' Pink Floyd fan. As for me I am just the average,if there is such a person, kiwi: paying off the mortgage, putting food in the family, etc. As for my signature I use a different one for each forum that I post on. Have not thought of a suitable one for here yet.

But ultimately Holly Roller is right- we are all to blame for the death of Christ!
This is where the Christians get it wrong. In an attempt to portray guilt for the crucifixion on humankind the Church manipulates the indavidual so they believe, that in order to gain everlasting life, man is born a sinner and only through repentance can he come to the gates of god. (My words) It is very easy to quote scripture to support your views. It is what Catholics do as do Protestants, Baptists, Angilicans, Bretheran, and the host of other Christian denominations. They quote scripture to support their views. And each of them have a different interpertation of the bible, as you yourself do. Zed I do not know if you have children but if you do and you believe that they have been born with sin and that they are also responsiable for the death of Christ then you do them a great disservice. If you do not have children then you are in no position to cast judgment on the unborn. It is akin to speaking ill of the dead and you are no better than those that you yourself critisize. The real problem of those that believe that they and only they hold the key to eternal salvation is that they do not know why God gave us two ears and only one tongue. When you can figure that one out let me know and I might take you a little more serious than at present.

Skyryder.

I'm a wanker all the time. :)

I am a really nice guy when I am not on KB. Which is why most don't meet me off-line. Would ruin the whole "The world is full of wankers" motto than many here hold.

Cant bring myself to do it.

I dont think I have broken a bottle of wine yet,
Have certainly smashed alot of other things .. Managed to knock a little old lady over a year ago when I was working in the freezer, took out a flat trolley of frozen chickens, and I stopped in a hurry when she, like all customers walked out infront of me without a care, the front box was already open and a bunch of frozen birds took off across the floor and took her out..
I felt bad, but it was funny :shifty:

Which is why I come here to vent all over the BMG lovers here.

Heh british cars. What a silly topic.
Its like talking about something that doesn't do its job properly. Like those silly F.R.E.D. things they put in ration packs. Whole lot of handy ideas wrapped up in a package no one can use or work.

I have a very low tolerance threshold for idiots, dishonesty, unreliability and I am an opinionated, confrontational, curt, and some would say uncompromising know it all, both on line and in the flesh.

I am one of those objectionable people who at times digs his toes in over declining standards (and such trivia) and regularly make embarrassing (for all) scenes until I am satisfied that my point (being an arsehole) has been well and truly understood by the offending party.

So if you don't like my size 40 shoulder pads and megaphone mouthpiece e-persona and are more comfortable imagining that I might be a mewling little push over in the flesh. I really couldn't give a flying fuck as it makes absolutely no difference to me.
I am who I am, do as I want when it suits me and seldom have cause to apologise for it.

You may now proceed to take turns nose plowing my stink ditch.

Fuck you very much
