I was standing outside a shop in the Whangarei mall today. A girl came and sat on the window ledge of a shop. Next thing you know I hear "could you please help me?" I was cautious at first wether it was a trick to get me close enough to snatch my bag (horrible to have to think like that I know)
I got close enough and asked her what was wrong. She told me she felt dizzy and didn't feel all to good at all. Again she said "please help me" Next thing you know her eyes rolled up in her head and she collapsed on the floor. I tried supporting her all I could. Did anyone walking past bother to help? No. I don't think so. Did any stop to see if we were ok? Hell if "she" was ok? Nope.
she kind of sat on the floor for a minute then got up again. Told me she had to go to the bathroom. I left it at that. Something had me worried though and I decided to find mum. Told her what happened. She then asked me where she had gone just incase she collasped again.
Sure enough we found her in the public toilet collapsed on the floor. While people stepped over her body to get to the sink to wash her hands. Like wtf? You see someone collasped on the damn floor like that wouldn't it raise a brow? Wouldn't you at least ask if they were ok?
The girl was sweating like crazy. Went and got a lady in one of the shops to call an ambo, got a glass of water and wet cloth to whipe her brow with and try and cool her down some. She couldn't even reach for her glass of water let alone hold it. I had to place her hand round it.
I couldn't help but think to myself.. "What if that was my child collapsed on a public toilet floor" what if that was my child and someone who couldn't care less stepped over them so they could "wash their hands" and go back to their daily business. that is a very horrible thought.
I'm sure if it was their child they would have gave two fucks.

The girl was maori. All that stepped over her were white. ONE lady stopped and asked what was happening after we had the girl resting up waiting for the ambo. Funny thing is this woman was maori herself. Funny that. But then again who am I to make these comments. I'm white myself and yet both mum and I noticed that.

you know whats worse, it happens more than once everyday - people just stop caring its called desensitising (sp). I was in the park and noticed a young asian girl walking through the bush - I saw a group of young "gansters" who I see outside the shelter on my way to work if I go the long way, so I decided to go up top and watch and make sure they didnt try anything - guess what they did - but I just shouted and they fucked off. broad daylight. fucken makes you sick - the amount of shit around here would keep some of you south aucklanders wondering

Well done for doing the descient thing and the responsible thing. Last time I was there I could see and hear the attitude. I go up there on a regular basis to see my son and I allways get warned about the place. Last time I wore on of my "Taranaki Hard Core" garmets (local surf label). I kept getting asked if it was a Taranaki local gang!! I laughed each time, until someone came up behind me and tried to pick a fight.
Must be a Northland thing? The first time I was in Auckland by myself I got involved in an arguement. Three skin heads was hassling a young asian couple in Queen Street, who I picked knew little english. At that stage I had a shaved head, rolled up jeans & black leather mack boots. One pulled a knife so I hit him. The whole country is becoming more and more like America. If you do help, your damned, the skinhead tried to get me charged and I can be sued as a RN helping out in the community. If you don't help, then your a dyslexic maggot with a lack of morals.:moon:

I've also been warned about the place. Have been wanting to move down there for some time and I have been warned again and again not to. Maybe I should take peoples advice and avoid that area and think of moving somewhere else instead. Reckon you could be in the gutter bleeding to death and someone would rather steal your handbag, clothes or shoes than help you out.
Never had a problem in Auckland as yet. Though I had a hooker follow me around calling me a bitch and wanting a scrap cause she tried to get some from the guy I was dating at the time and his friend. they turned her down so she felt the need to follow us around for a while.

My way of dealing with is avoiding it when I can. Although I allways feel abliged(sp) to help those in trouble. I'm seriously considering moving to the south island and I reckon I'll live there within the next decade. The people down there have a different outlook on life and get on with it.

:bash:
Thank you for helping that girl, hopefully your kindness will be paid forward to you. The world needs more people like you and your mom. I can see this from the girls perspective as I am a Type 1 Diabetic and something like that could happen to me and I would be relying on the public to help me out.
Good on you.

Dude it'll only turn into South Africa if we let it, and the people here in NZ will not let that happen. Don't be so negative, keep a positive frame of mind.

Slowly it is going to turn into a place like that because sadly people are letting it get that way. Sorry but I have to agree with the guy.
People just honestly don't give a shit and it is starting to show in many small ways. Soon it will be in bigger ways.

Well this is the world we live in. What if that girl was you? You could have died on that public toilet floor because people were to heartless to stop and see if you were ok.
I don't know what was wrong with her, but the ambo did take her away.
This showed me that you can't rely on the public anymore. Because it could be just your luck that no one who actually cares finds you if your ever in that sort of situation.

Agree and disagree mate. It is dangerous for the rest of us with the baggy pants and P freaks attempting to attack as they believe that they are something/someone that they are not, hard done by....or whatever their lame arse excuses are. They have NO idea how fortunate we are here. Sad...

Ok heres an example to show its not just affecting people in gangs. you walk down the street and you "look round" accidently look at "someone" they then beat the crap out of you. true or not true? if you say not true then here is an example for you.
A girl I work with. Nice pretty young thing, happened to "look" at a guy. Now she has a boyfriend of her own, but this "look" was taken wrong.
Not long later 2 girls followed her to the toilet at work and beat the crap out of her. When I say beat the crap out of her, I mean it. She collapsed on the floor, where they continued kicking her, and kicked her head again and again. When she was found she was unconcious.
Its not just gang related. All you have to do is look at someone, and they, or someone else may not like it.
Define perfect? In my eyes perfect does not exist. I mean, how do we know what perfect is? Perfect is what we think and assume things are meant to be like.

Hey lets not allow one thing to exagerate things eh?....look around the rest of the world and we have it pretty easy here.
I was in Africa and the local villagers caught a couple of thieves and set fire to them.......does that happen here?
I went to some pretty tough schools in London where most of the year above ended up in jail when they left school and they would enjoy lining up along a fenced playground and then just move in beating the crap out of everyone who got in the way.......this was every week.....so there may...not saying it should happen but there may have been some background to that incident (there often is) and there is no smoke wihout fire.......not saying it is right and if I had seen it I would have helped...
Remember gangs etc have been around a few hundred years.....it's not new.....maybe because we have a lot more luxuries now we highten things that have been happening a while.....who knows?

Sorry you feel that way.......I think more people care than you realise......Nelson Mandela cared, he was one of a few who did and made sacrifices......okay bad luck that when he got released the world was in a recession so he did not get the support he wanted and things went backwards a bit, so whilst there are still some problems in South Africa it is better than it was so there has to be hope.......

For those who think Auckland is safe - take a walk around slum areas like Otara - I study there at mit I am getting quite concerned for my own saftey there now - Have been there 3 years now and I can see it getting worse over the time I have been there. People don’t care for there own lives let alone others. I do agree New Zealand is slowly becoming like South Africa. I have spoken to fallow South Africans and they agree to.
Most of it is to do with the parents and there attitudes - Most parents are to busy to care what there kids are up to which is understandable in today’s society. I say bring back the good old Kane and shed a few tears. The teachers of today’s world are to scared to do or say anything towards discipline a child in fear they will loose there job. What use is this? Just think of how the Animal world deals with young. (You may thinks this is absurd but I will leave you to think about it. The Animal world except Humans, has not changed anything to speak of at all but Humans have... WHY?)

The real problem is a lack of two things;
1. Education - This is not the teachers fault... it's everyones fault. Parents can teach their own kids but don't seem to want to (apart from Wolf who I've noted seems to be a great father / role model).
Would you for instance tolerate an increase in taxes to expand the schooling system.
For instance kids here have to buy their own books and pencils and shit, that's third world man, and what about the fact that NZ primarys do not teach history, or geography or art or music or anything that stands us apart from the animals. What about the fact that kids don't get proper meals from schools and therefore go all day without eating a hot meal (anyone here remember Jamies School Dinners from the UK??). What about the fact that they don't get any proper PE lessons, teaching anything other than running around a field... and how about sports other than rugby? tennis / football / anything. Take the all blacks out of the equision, what does this country excell at?
2. Kids don't want to learn. Period. What's the old saying, you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Well there will always be some people that don't want to learn because it's easier not to, and they don't have the balls to do something if it's too hard.
Sounds like a rant I know... but in many ways this country is fuckin backwards... Labours going on about being ranked 5th in OECD this and that shit is crap. You have no free public health system, your schools are a joke, most people can't drive properly, food is way more expensive than it should be, and don't even get me started on the condition of some of the roads here!!!
The real shame is that this country could be so great if someone got off their ass... fired all the PC law-making wankers and get Kiwis moving into the 21st fucking century.
I'm off to register my name for the next MEP ballot!!

I agree. I also want to add that ALOT of blame should be placed on parents. I knew alot of people where i worked who had kids when they were teenagers or early twenties and they don't teach thier kids respect. The mum or dad will tell the kids to do something and the children will say 'fuck off' or something similar and the parents think its funny or a joke then one day when the kid says this and the parents have had a bad day the child gets a hiding. He/she is so confused they have been taught it was ok to act like this then one day BAM and they don't know what they've done wrong. It's no wonder violence is becoming more prominant in todays society. Also it used to be ok if another parent/adult told your child off if they saw them doing something wrong, now you don;t want to incase the parent of that child get told about it and comes round to give you a hiding for treating thier child in like that. The reason why the child was told off in the first place get completly ignored and the kid get off scott free.

I dunno. True there have been a lot of changes in our society over the last 10 or 20 years in terms of how people treat one another, and with the advent of P-related crimes the place is just that much scarier and more random, but I honestly don't think Otara or any of the other so-called lower socioeconomic areas of Auckland (can't speak for any other part of the country) are that dangerous.
I'm a white European, I lived the first 28 years of my life in Glen Innes and Pt England, supposedly two of the more dangerous suburbs in Auckland, largely populated by Maori and polynesians who are the ethnic groups us white folk are supposed to fear most right? Never had any troubles what so ever with people taking me on, trying to mug me etc.
Now I live in Eaqst Tamaki, just a short hop away from Otara, and I too go to MIT (Electronic Engineering BTW danb) I feel the same about the place as I did in Glen Innes and Pt England. There are a lot of people whom you feel you ought to fear because of what scociety and the media tell you but on the whole nothing ever happens.
Still, it pays to be prepared and stay casually on your guard. A bit of Karate or Kick Boxing training helps give you a measure of confidence and security.

As a counter point to my last post in this thread, the one time I did have to go to full red alert was in a pub in Waihi - I think it was called the "Sterling". Me my sister and a female friend of hers shot over there from Thames on a Friday night to see 'Gary Harvey and the Night Owls' - a really cool southern blues/rock band. We each got ourselves a drink and parked ourselves up at a bench to watch the band.
Pretty soon a BIG Maori guy (big like over 120kg) came over and started babbling incomprehensibly to us in a very drunk but friendly way. OK, so we smiled and left him to it, but he wouldn't leave us in peace and then started trying to put his arm around my sister's friend so I went over to him and chatted in a friendly way and asked him to just move along. I shook his very large and strong hand and that was that.
A bit later one of the white locals leaned over to me and whispered in my ear "watch your money and drinks around that guy..." to which I said thanks.
We just kept a low profile, I diddn't want to cause a ruckus and take on this guy. You don't know how the locals are going to react if some skinny (I'm 71kg and 5'8") white city-boy comes into their town and starts up a fight. Could turn real nasty real quick if you miss-judge things - feckin front-page stuff.
Well, the drunk kept hanging around, but my friend the local would stop by occasionally to let me know he and his mates were keeping an eye on the dude and that they had my back - very good of them.
Eventually the drunk guy started being a real nuisance and wouldn't leave my sisters mate alone and was going too far, so I stepped up to him and firmly told him to move off and leave us alone. He wouldn't budge and tried to loom over me so I pushed him back, he pushed me and it was about to come to blows but the friendly locals stepped in and put themselves between us, then moved the drunk along.
Strange part was I wasn't the least bit scared 'cause I was sober and knew I could move much faster than him, and had judged the feeling in the bar correctly.
Was a very weird night for a few other reasons too, the whole vibe and attitude of the people in that place was completely different to what I'm used to. There was an edge to the atmosphere, the locals were hard-as, it felt dangerous, and I knew as soon as we stepped into the pub that we were out of place and diddn't belong - when people asked where we were from, I said Thames, as I'm sick of the predjudice the rest of the country seems to have against Aucklanders and diddn't feel like dealing wiht it.
BTW Good on ya Kittie, I'm a certified first-aid'er and I'd have gone straight to that girls aid if I saw the same thing happen. It's sad that Political Correctness would stop some men from helping out a semi-concious female for fear of false accusation.

People just dont care anymore, they are either busy shopping, or driving somewhere, and wont deviate from their chosen path to alleviate someone elses grief. I'm a firm believer in the saying "charity begins at home", which I dont always intrpret in the literal sense, but refer to home as "NZ".

Know what you mean. When we lived in the South Island and on the West Coast, when we were asked where we were from - it was always - Motukarara, or Tai Tapu, or somewhere. Mention Auckland and it was almost an incentive for a riot!
I think a lot of the attitude you get back at you, is the attitude you project.Whilst, you can never garantee exactly how someone will react, if you project a freindly, helpful attitude, its amazing how oftenyou get it returned, from any ethnic group. Ive had no trouble, but, saying that, it does pay to be aware of when a situation could get out of control - not be totally naive.

Little kids hate me, and I hate them. Harsh but true. But if I found one like that I'd still have the heart to help them find their mummy. Who knows you could ignore them and next thing you know they actually do end up being abducted.
It is true though that not many people will not go out of their way to help to help someone, specially if it is going to interfer with their day.

Been there done that. I found a distraught kid wandering around Warehouse and thought twice but did take her hand and took her up to the help counter. I made sure I said in quite a loud voice (for those who were standing around watching) "Are you lost? Would you like to go to the front desk?" I even had a couple of people follow (at a safe distance). But none actually wanted to help the kid.
I know if I was lost/hurt/or other that someone would help me. I always try to help even if its not much. I applaud John Campbell for his actions a few weeks ago.

Its ashame that there are people out there who do things and then when people who genuinely want to help, try and help, they then need to be "cautious" so that they don't get themselves in any trouble when all they want to do is help. Or in some cases they don't help at all, in cause someone then points the finger.
