Neons like in fluro tubes? Or a blue tinted headlamp? Or HID?.All but HID are legal...unless OE.

Yep but HID H4 bulbs make so much difference, headlight is standard so no one can tell, and at least you can see better in the dark.

On M'way today I spotted a bike some way off with light on.
As he got closer his light was actually OFF, and it was only the sun reflecting off his wind deflector...
He wouldda been harder to see if that visor wasn't there (and nice and shiny)!!!

To my knowledge, no its not. If it was, how can people get away with selling them on TradeMe and even in shops? The colour you proberbly saw was called "Artic Blue" and they come standard on new BMW's and some others.

i thought they were not legal like those lights you can get for your wheels. the ones for your wheels have in small print on the packaging saying "must be used on closed road", "not road legal".

they can sell them to people because a lot use them for car/motorbike shows and racing...i think ;)

Check out http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/vehicle-safety/get-your-lights-right.html

You are right that they cannot use other colours but you can still have a higher performance bulb

Replacement bulbs

If you want to improve the performance of your headlamps, you can replace the bulbs with high-efficiency bulbs. However, these replacement bulbs must be of a similar type and wattage as the original bulbs, eg don’t replace a standard bulb with one of higher wattage.

Make sure replacement bulbs are the correct colour, eg headlamp bulbs must be predominantly white or amber, although some white bulbs can look slightly blue. You should use commonsense to ensure you don’t run into trouble later on.

Vehicle lighting retailers in New Zealand are required by law to sell bulbs which are fit for the purpose for which you’re intending to use them – so they’ll be able to advise you on choosing the right bulb for the job.

I saw something at the beginning of November going up to the Nelson rally, a fair distance behind a caught sight of a blue flashing light so I slowed down only to find out it was a bike. But I'm sure his headlight was blue and flashing damn sure it was a cop to start of with.

He was proberbly just going over bumps in the road. I have had that happen to me.

Riding at night and you think some jerk is flashing his lights at you and you think "WTF? My lights are dipped," then you realise that it's bumps in the road.

HID is gas discharge, H4 is quartz halogen, two entirely different technologies
HID requires a high voltage power source

HID requires a high voltage power sourceActually H4 is just the base type, that is the shape of the bit that fits the reflector/housing (much like BC or ES for home bulbs).

You can get 'H4 HID', they're simply replacment globe setups (and related control gear) that retrofit HID lighting to an existing halogen housing.

Illegal without a low volume vehicle certification, or illegal fullstop?

The intention of the ruling is to make them illegal full stop as they have no way of controlling the retro fit market - like anyone can import their own off the internet from who knows where complying with who knows what standards....you could get backyarders making their own.But present one to a LVV certifier and see what they say.We are well on the way to a vehicle having to meet day of compliance regs for all it's natural life.

Exactly, the HID light I use has a ballast/inverter, and as it can only have a single filament the "bulb" unit slides in and out of the housing thus changing the pattern:2thumbsup

If you want more light try the +50's that Narva bring out, also you can get all weather and arctic blue... You could get the long range infer red that BMW have brought out and use a heads up display type thing that overlaps the image on the inside of your visor all done with blue tooth to save the wire trees of coarse!
Might be a bit on the costly side tho...
