Calling all yammy owner/knowable types

Please talk to me about the yzf750 and 1000's of '87's ilk to '91ish around about time ... availability of parts and the like here in nz ... and whatever else you can come up with.

Reason : I hada windfall and am thinking of getting another bike and one of these are in contention ... all thanks to a girl , a car and a courtcase ... thankyou , thankyou very much.

What would you like to know Wari. I can give you an opinion on my bike. I don't seem to have too many troubles finding parts, but then, I haven't needed anything too tricky. Between Maidstones in Upper Hutt, Sawyers in Welly, and Bucket and Bits in Naenae I've managed to get everything I need.

Bike goes great, good enough for me, especially after I rebuilt the brakes.

Apart from that can't help you much - I will say more after I've owned it longer.

FZR1000 genesis ('87-'88)have weak 2nd gear,little ends and clutch baskets(this from my own experience :doh: ),and an 18" rear wheel,which limits tyre choice.Had 270 kph on mine,no worries(muzzy pipe,k&n,dynojet kit ect)and the old girl handled o.k.,but was much better with a 17" rear fitted(exup)
Exup thou's suffer from an even weaker clutch(I think it's the same,but they make more power....)and I believe still had the second gear prob.Had 280kph on my mates one in aussie,two up,plenty of go....good handling,not enough ground clearance(scraped the fairing and exup on the road round corners a few times)Very low seat height.(and no,there wasn't a prob,they are just low...)
early YZF thou's and 750's still had weak clutches too....
Of course if yer not hard on them it prolly won't be a problem
I don't know much about the early 750's I'm afraid....

My FZR750 had 85K when I sold it - motor still strong as, rear shock fucked, had front wheel bearings done, fork seals (hit a fuken deep pothole at 180...yeeha) and trouble with the clutch slave cylinder. Parts were no problem. YZF750 gearboxes are stronger than the FZR thous.

my son has an 87 or thereabouts (dunno if its relevant but its purple/yellow Vance & Hines graphics) FZR1000 - goes like hell but the gearbox is pretty bad, any sort of load in the top three gears and it jumps straight out of gear. I've been told that a FZ750 6 speed drops in (obviously after splitting the cases) so we're looking for either a FZR1000 OR FZ750 gearbox or complete engine. Anyone wrecking?

Hey Pete - buckets and bits in Naenae are wrecking an 87 FZR1000 at the moment. Give 'em a call. Still haven't caught up with you - must throw a rock over the train tracks one day mate.

FZR750T and FZR1000T are pretty much the same, apart from engine and front forks so interchangebility of chassis parts is not a big problem.
89 FZR 1000 is a different beast to the 87-88. Mates 89 FZR 1000 had front fork seal problems.
YZF750's are also an underrated bike. Not many out here although Red Baron are bringing in a few.
YZF 750 gearboxes fit straight in to the FZR/YZF 1000 (if you're splitting cases)
