View Full Version : EFTPOS at pump - Do you use it ??

There is a Mobil gas station that I used to quite regularly go to in Newmarket, it has eftpos at pump.
I used to like going there cause I could just pull up, swipe my card, pump my gas and go. Didn't have to take my lid off, go inside, wait for the indian guy inside to get off the phone talking to his relatives, sweat my ass off, pay then go. Lately the EFTPOS at pump is not working (about the past month) so i pull up, see that the EFTPOS at pump option is unavailable and i drive off to another Gas station, Almost like a Boycott cause they pissed me off.
Anyone else as crazy as i am ?

I use it if they don't turn it off. Some stations have a policy of turning the eftpos at pump off, to try and prevent the motorcyclist from filling while sitting on the seat.

I used to use it before I sold the bik. So much better than getting all the gear off and then on etc.

I hardly ever take my helmet off, if its night time I go to the night time pay window but 9 times out ot ten they dont use that and tell me to go inside so I do, dont take off my helmet though.

Yeah, I use the eftpos at pump. I quite often find I need to swipe a few times to get it to work. One thing to try if it doesn't work is swiping it in the opposite direction.

I'm crazier than you, although I dunno that you wanting to use EFTPOS is a crazy thing. I wouldn't use the most convenient servo near our house coz the fuctard there wouldn't give me cash when I used EFTPOS, because he'd "Just balanced the float" or somesuch. Why the fook should I care? That's his problem! So for several years I went elsewhere. Then when I went there again recently (it's convenient, y'know) all the pumps had little hand-written notes: "prepay only". Well fuck you too! I don't know how much gas I need - how am I supposed to pay in advance?!? So they're boycotted again.

I only know of one gas station that has eftpos at the pump. I use it if I can, as others have said, it's way easier than taking your helmet off and going and standing in line at the counter.
They don't always work though. I got a new cashflow card and that made a bit of difference, but I guess some of the pumps are more dirty than others or something.

Yeah, use it almost exclusively - Mobil Greenlane - don't even take your hat off - best thing since self serve.
And unless I'm dead outta gas somewhere I REFUSE to pre-pay at a servo - especially for $20 fuel max. If they don't trust me - I don't trust them. Fuggem - next!

No it's your problem really cause you're the one not getting what you want. They aren't a bank.
The prepay notes on the pumps are BS though - Having to walk in and leave your card at the counter, then fill up, then go back in to pay. What utterly crap service.

Same... If they try make me pay first i normally give a one finger salute and drive to the next Gas station. The thing that really fucks me off is how they are called "service stations" but you never get any service. At gull you expect it - but it really pisses me off when you pull up to a gasser and theres three chodes sitting inside at the counter watching you fill up, Gone are the days when they come take your 20$ and pump your gas for you - there are still a few that do - Mobil on grove road papakura is one, i think Shell clevedon sometimes do as well

Pulled into Shell recently one morning. Think it was 1:30am, so not too early or too late.
Had to prepay for my petrol. Couldn't just leave card like normal and eftpos at pump was out or doesn't accept credit cards. WhyTF are you asking me how much petrol I need at 1:30am! I want to fill my tank, not guessimate it. Made a guess and ended up with 3/4 full tank and thus returned the next day for a top up. They said they'll refund any monies not used on petrol if I over guessimated, didn't believe them, they'll keep it as a prepay surcharge for sure..
Next time I have to prepay, I'm riding on and try somewhere else or come back during day light hours.

i just recently started working at the local bp's [yep...at least 3 different ones at any time! LOL] and i was told that i had to at least be seen to go outside [unless another staff member got there first] and we also got a drilling on monday to ask for aa cards, oil/water checks, etc. when it comes to serving the bikes that come in, i always ask if they are ok and 9 times outta ten they tell me they will fill the tank, which is cool. i go and serve elsewhere or talk about their bikes, the weather and if theres any rides coming up soon. i also dont mind when they wear their lids inside to pay, if i thought theyd know me at any site, id say "when im behind the counter, leave your helmet on!"
i did used to use the pak n slave site, but since i got rough treatment from them at the end of my contract, i boycotted and filled elsewhere and havent filled there since! now i only go in there to big friends on the staff and make sure nothing gets done! LOL
since the staff numbers are small enough, everyone knows everyone at least by site, if not name, so that means i dont bother removing my lid as they recognise me and my bike [seems im the only biker!!] also means i get cheap coffee...was told last night i didnt have to pay at all [we give free coffee to police and firefighters] i said, i aint any of em, so im payin, lol.

The only petrol stations around here that have that are a few down town. I tend to allways support the local up the road and they all know me and like to yack about the bike. They'll be in for a shock soon as when I rock up on the TT350, they can fill it up:devil2: Where as no one but myself will do it to the CBR:eek5:

Mobil really annoys me. They turn off the eftpos so you're forced to pay inside and maybe buy some expensive chips or drinks. But then they complain if you don't take your helmet off.
Usually the eftpos of pumps in the middle are always off. From 7pm all are supposed to run on eftpos, but not always, it depends on them.
At Pak&Save they complaines because I didn't get off the bike, but then I explained that not having a center stand, I can't refill it completely if I don't do that. Plus having it between your legs is safer than holding it with a hand while refilling with the other one. They really piss me off sometimes:brick:

It's Prepay 100% of the time in the US - be thankful.
So far Mobil Greenlane, Mobil K'Road and Mobil Quay Street have EFTPOS at pump... I love it...
I hate the prepay thing completely... especially when that is how EFTPOS at the pump works ANYWAYS!...
You swipe, you enter your number - a charge is authorised for some amount of money. You can fill to that amount of money...
Why have Prepay at that point?!!!???? - It's already there!
Stupid people not realising how the machine is set up ...

Surely when you use the Eftpos pay at pump you've put in your card, as well as PIN, therefore you've effectiviely 'prepaid' anyways?
Only garage I usually use is the Quay Street one next to McDonalds, it's right on the way home from work so nice and handy.
Sit on the bike, swipe the card, enter the pin, fill the tank, grab receipt and leave. Easy.

I love the eftpost at pump concept so much, that in preference i'll go to mobil....(at the northcote one sometimes this means riding around a couple of pumps til you find one where the eftpos option is actually turned on), but it's worth it to be able to avoid dealing with the teeth pulling type process that waiting to "pay at the counter inside" has become.
and, if the eftpos at pump isn't an option on any of the pumps, then i'll either bail to another gas station, or make a big fuss about it at the counter....(being a chick, i'm good at that sort of thing) :msn-wink:

weasel....the way i understand it, the funds at the pay at pumps dont come out until you hang the nozzle back up. therefore if you put in for $10 to fill your bike and hang the pump up without filling, nothing comes out of your account.
from what ive read, the prepay [going inside to pay] the funds come out before you fill and hang the nozzle up. if you repay $10 and you only get $8 in, i dont know what happens to the leftovers. maybe your meant to put the $2 in a can and take it with you? lol.

I don't have EFTPOS - too newfangled, but I absolutely HATE prepay. Bike tanks are SMALL. I want to fill it completely. How am I supposed to know how much it will take. And no, I won't leave my credit card with them - the credit card companies specifically caution against this, and if the servo isn't willing to trust me, I ain't willing to trust them. And as for "Prepay in excess and we'll refund any balance" - yeah sure , like I'm going to believe that.
If I'm not dead empty and they insist on prepay , I'll leave, telling them why. If I am dead empty I'll get 3 or 4 litres - just enough to get to the next gas station. And tell them why. Don't suppose they care about losing the sale on the bike, but I do the same in the Pajero , and that's $100 of business they just lost.
From observation I think hardly any of those EFTPOS terminals ta the pumps actually work

Not sure about the prepay thing cos I've never done it.
But with the Eftpos one it just takes outta your account whatever you use. But once you've started filling the tank there's no way you can stop the transaction from going through on the card. Eftpos at pump is just as good if not better than prepay, and if the garage is going to be dicks about it I'll go elsewhere :spudwave:

I use it almost religeously. Love it. I scan the screen when I pull up, and if it says "Unavailable" I ride to the next pump, if thats unavailable then it'll be next servo, unless I'm desperate.
One thing to note tho - it "reserves" the funds in your account. You might want to do a search about this, because I know a few people have complained. I'm always paying on visa and never have it maxed out so its not a prob for me, but I know others have gotten up in arms about it.
And when I have hit a pump on prepay, I have always been allowed to fill up without leaving anything behind when I'm on the bike. Just wander up to the counter, say I'm going to fill it but it shouldnt be more than $20, and they go sweet as and unlock the pump for me. Always wear my helmet to the counter as well, have only once been asked to take it off and I never went back to that station.
Also I find when I'm on the bike everyone is more friendly towards me, hows it going, nice bike, whats it like, all that sort of thing. And they let you get away with things like unlocking the pump and wearing your helmet inside. But in the car, different story - your just one of the nameless faces in the crowd and your lucky to get so much as a hello.
Bikes rock.

they all have cameras though!? probally dont have tapes in them to save some coin.
I see that one of the CC companies fraud investigation unit is based in Australia, how handy is that. Mate had his new CC stolen out of the letter box and 3 grand put on it in a day, and the bought gas which would suggest they have a rego on tape, but the company in aus aint going to see that are they,

Yep I use it if I can. Also, if I need to fill up, I'll try to go to a mobil or pak 'n save nearby, if there is one. Normally plenty of mobil in the areas I frequent.
Never had many problems with locked pumps, suspected it once (just pushed the bike to the next pump, and it wasn't locked), and once computers were down.
Other than that, with 1-2 people at each "service" station, what do you expect, don't think I have had a single person come out of the big ones.
The local is better (a shell), the guy came out, chatted, was going to fill the bike (took a couple of attempts to get him to desist)
yeah, I love eftpos, I have no idea why the other companies don't do it.

Interesting hearing how other people get on with petrol.
I didn't realise that there could be so many problems.
I just fill, even when it says prepay. Never had to toot my horn. Or anything else.
Just walk in with all my gear on, including helmet. I wear a flip-face so I have that up. A smile works wonders.
And I do not have a "local". Just use what ever is convenient at the time.
I would never fill my bike while I sat on it. But then also I never use my cell phone while there either. Also don't smoke.

Hey Guys, just thought i would give you a heads up about pay at pump especially at Mobils (not sure about others), if you use a credit card, it automatically authorises $100 of your available credit, even if your purchase is only $10... and that takes 5 working days to drop off, so if you have a low-ish credit limit, you may find yourself declined somewhere else even though you know the credit should be there..... lovely trick played by gas stations to help with "drive-offs" apparently.. i work for a bank so am forever deleting authorisations for mobil customers so they can continue purchasing with their credit card... just my 2c worth...Nic

I've had a 100 percent eftpos pump success rate so far.

Thanks for that Nicksta, wondered what was going on there.
Since I have had the bike I've never had to prepay, just get the attention of attendant and he unlocks the pump otherwise I find another station.
I love eftpos at pump, use it whenever available, although I've been tending to go as far as I can per tank, sometimes been nearly caught out, although the reserve is easy on my new bike. Still getting used to the little tank.
Maybe I need to find a local and fill up every 2 or 3 days.???

Eftpos at pump is fine. If I have to go inside to pay then the lid stays on. I do try to park with rego plate facing the shop so that the cameras can see it, and I always have the wallet out and ready to pay. If they do not like that and want me to remove the lid, then I make the enqiury about if they do the same with our burkah wearing colleagues...

amazing the number of people who use their cell phones while filling. and that includes staff....i have heard there are a couple who stand there txting. heck, mine barely leaves my bag when im at work. when at pak n save i used to tap the offender and then tap the sign. same goes for under 15 year olds filling...also not allowed. when it came to the bikers and sitting, id leave em to it, even though i dont do it myself.

Then you give a figure above what you would expect to pay for a full tank.
The problem here, is that people don't trust the servo to return the excess money, how long it would take to return it, and so on.
