i had my bike checked over like a month ago and now its starting to over heat and sound like shit again :mad: im kinda pi$$ed about it. i dont know if the rain has anything to do with it because i got caught in it last weekend and had to spend like hour n a half n heavy rain. but before that it was fine, well yeah i took it for a big ride down the lake ferry and around the south wairarapa... it got quite hot but i just pulled over and let it rest for 10 mins... but other than that it has been going fine. i dunno if it is my crappy riding because i rev the hell out of the poor wee soul :innocent: could that be stuffing it up?

They are prone to overheating but most at risk when sitting at idle alot, i.e. city riding

yeah well i dont do it all the time, well i didnt today and its hot as hell u could cook an egg on it, n i only rode it home from work and thats 4ks away from my place...

the oil is topped up n yeah...

im thinking of trying 98 octane ? instead of 96... will that help?

I dont think the petrol would make all that much difference. I only use 91 and like I said I havent had that prob. Theres something definately wrong to be that hot after 4 ks

i have no idear what the oil is, the bike shop did it all for me. could i have water in the oil or air cool or something like that?

well the oil should be alright if the shop did it. I dont think you could get water in the engine. Even in heavy rain. Sorry mate, I'm not sure. Was it overheating before you got it serviced?

yeah it was, even worse than it was now. they said it was to do with the oil cool and the engine oil being low, well now its all fulled up im puzzled why its doing this, maybe its the muggy weather? i dunno...

FXR 150's run on 91 petrol. If you run it on a higher octane, then you might wreck the spark plug.
Run on 91 and put in a new spark plug.

Your engine can't be getting hot after 4km. I ride 5km and majority of engine is easy to hold. Only area which isn't is where the spark does it thing.

Is your oil cooler damaged or blocked?
Is your oil cooler pipes to and from damaged?
How new is your spark plug?
How clean is your air filter?
Is your choke stuck?

If oil keeps it cool, then I'd get the oil pump tested for pressure and oil flow rate.

Your oil level should be near the top most mark beside the glass window. That's high. Middle mark is low and should be avoided. Bottom most mark I assume is "I need to buy a new engine now". Where's your oil level at?

well its got nothing to do with the revving... i race mine and because with the new carb on it, it has a very narrow powerband, which is a 13000RPM so mine stays there for 20min at a time and i have never had a prob with it getting hot. also....how do you know its getting hot?? they dont have temp guages and its not like there is a radiator to boil over.... change the oil and put some good quality in,

try this as well, due to different humidity levels, it may be leaning out (to much air, not enough petrol) so.... once up to temp, and its gets "hot" put the choke on, just a little, and adjust it to find when the bike performs better. if it runs better with a little bit of choke then your jetting is too lean

just looked at what the guys checked over down at the bike shop and everything is ok and if it wasnt they have fixed it, so everything is sweet...


shet i just read this now and fulled my tank up with 96 yesterday, so i got a full tank of 96. bugger!


im just saying its getting hot because you can feel it comming thru my bike pants and to touch it burns, as i found out...

an engine will always get very hot..... and it will burn you if you touch it...... but its hard to gauge how hot it is without an infared thingy .....

if its got oil.... right jetting, and your not doing 50kph in first gear, then it wont over heat .:)

Did they do the filter at the sametime? They then only filled it with 1l, with filter you need 1.1l (assuming oil cooler not drain too much, 1.3l for rebuild). Thus, you need more oil, that is the low level marker. It'll only need about another 100-200ml. Don't think it'll explain why it's apparently running so hot.

Question:
Is your lower leg/foot actually touching the side of the engine while you're riding?
If so, you need to adjust your riding position and not hold the bike so tightly. No part of your body should be touching the hot bits. Put the outer edge of your boots about on the edge of the foot pegs. That'll keep your legs/foot away from the engine but still have solid footing plus still ability to control gear & brake levers.

It's been farkin hot lately, I wouldn't be suprised if thats whats caused the increased temp. I've noticed over the last week, my bike is running somewhat hotter in built up areas. However, My mates new bike is matching my temperatures, so I'm not concerned at all.

This is all spoken from my experience with my old FXR - I always ran it on 96 and it never had a problem at all, if I recall correctly the manual says run on 91 or higher. As for overheating, what makes you think its overheating and not just hot? Engines get hot and after only a few Kms they will be too hot to touch for too long. The FXR is air cooled so the faster you go the better it cools.

Oh yeah, give the thing hell, wring its damn neck - I revved the shit outa my old FXR and it was the only way to ride that little thing. It never once had a problem - Just use some decent quality oil and change it regularly and it should be sweet as.

yup i think the hot muggy weather had alot to do with it because everything is sweet on the bike, oil etc... it has been cooler the past days and it has been fine. i just get paranoid :pinch:
