What is peoples opinion on fixed or flipup f/pegs on race bikes?
As a scrutineer I have a prblem with the rules as they currently stand.

What is the current ruling on them and what problem do you have with it?

Hi if your Ernie I met your son at the PMCC round 1 a few weeks back.
I have just rised my pegs and dont expect them to touch down now but if I had fixed pegs in the original factory position for my bike I'm sure they would have caused me to have atleast one off.
I think fixed pegs must be the way to go to save your bike from damage but must be high and short enough as to not touch down before the bike would slide anyway. So with super sticky tyres thats very short and high pegs.

Im very much in two minds--I was running stock pegs on my SV650 and although they would pass scrutineering because they were factory pegs I wasn't so happy with them because Id ground them down on the track to a fairly sharp point --Im now running higher mounts pegs with fixed stubby pegs.
On a side note --I noticed on my xj's that the first generation pegs being solid aluminium would slide and fold up no problems--the later models had steel footpegs and had a tendency to grab
Once i figured it out I realised that the ally pegs had a big smooth surface when they contacted the road --might be something in that

Well Mike, i think that both are ok options. However, fixed pegs should be shortened. For buckets, theres alot of people that cant afford to/or dont have the technically able to fit folding pegs to their bikes.
If you do decide that you will rule folding only, im sure it could drum up some business for your new ocupation:msn-wink:
What do you have in the way of GB parts? Private message me with details of anything you have.
By the way, welcome to the site, and please dont feed the members.

Maybe on your track, but all other bucket meetings at kart tracks require folding with nylon guards as well. Personally I think solid with nylon sliders is safer, but the kart track owners get to decide.

We have our own track, so its not an issue of track surface as much as safety

yea i think the kart guys at the track we race at are dicks
they are sooooo strict with the nyloning and whats on and is not on our bikes....
it kinda ruins the 'buckets' thing

Not being a marshall I cant comment really, but my opinion would be as follows:
I have no problem with them [fixed pegs], so long as they offer more than 50 degrees lean angle on the bike (for a modern bike) in order to prevent them grounding. Not sure what the lean should be on a classic bike tho.
So long as the pegs have the little round bits on the end, they shouldnt cause much digging of the track surface (compared to other bits of the bike hitting it) which is really what the rule is for as far as I know.
The two things I would be concerned with are them digging and causing the bike to lose control, and/or digging and causing damage to the track surface.
If someones ground the end off the pegs, or there is not enough lean clearance, then I suspect I would raise concern over it.
I thought the FIM had a pretty clear reg on it these days anyhow.

Actually dude I'd delete that post, if they thought we thought that they'd take offence. I would. We have to appreciate that we aren't a charity cause & it's their track they deserve to make money off it if they can't use it. Some members are agin us so we need to tread carefully.

The way i see it, in our case anyway. Is buckets are buckets. The point is that their cheap and rough. As long as they arnt a danger to the rider/s then they should be fine. Ie: can lean the bike without them digin in..

Agree with ya in principle but things have moved on a bit since those days (unfortunately). Bring back the good old days, I say.
