im still lookin for a bike, but every time i tell someone im considerin gettin one they say "you'll regret the convenience and practicality and protection of a car..." (thats apart from the countless stories of people losing legs or heads by riding under trucks etc)...

has anyone here ever regretted selling their car to get a bike as their only mode of transportation?

after my brother rolled his car some years back nearly killing him and his mates, that kinda helped put me off driving. i can honestly say i cannot drive a car and have no interest in learning. the only upside i can really see is extra space for luggage, but that just means you need to be more resourceful with how you load up things. there have been one or two times when if id been driving a car, i likely wouldnt be here. on the bike being so much smaller, theres more room to "play" if bad situations arise.

one thing i love about the bike is knowing exactly where my arse end is, and being able to see how far back/forwards i can go before i smack into things. with a car i dont understand how you take the location of the 4 corners and put them together to go where you want.:no:

The only person who can make the final decision about what you do is you :yeah:

your list of degraders aren't bikers & you'd probably find that:
1) once the G/F has had a ride on the back she'd probably enjoy it
2) your friends & their quotes though being protective would most likely be looking themselves to get one once you've got yours & probably theres an air of spitefullness in their comments with a hint of jealousy.
3) Your rellies aren't exactly saying don't, their just trying to highlight their caring for you.
4) the dude buying the car is just buttering you up, take his money.

getting into biking you hear allsorts of rants & raves about bikes but 99% these comments come from people who have no idea about what motorcyclings all about

I don't think there will be many in this category. If I did do something like that, I would get something practical like the GTR. Gotta love the panniers and topbox for storage.

1)she is scared you will kill yourself but doesnt want to be negative about it

2) everybody does. I know someone who has hurt himself far worse on a bicycle than on a motorbike and he´s crashed many times on both....

3) he thinks you´ll suddenly have a need to be transporting rolls of carpet, two weeks´shopping or relatives around all the time....

4)Yeah but nanas say that sort of thing. You wont get wet if you buy good gear, and you wont have to take anyone anywhere, as opposed to everyone asking for a ride in your car.

5)Bollocks. He is a car nut. A comparable bike is much much more fun than a car.

6)Yeah? Is that why there are 4000-odd non-dead motorcyclists here?

7) You carry less stuff than your GF anyway..... You can chain all your gear to your bike if necesary, but I just wear my bike pants everywhere and carry the rest. As for luggage, you hardly fill up an entire car with stuff, pack a bit less and tie it all on. I´m carrying enough for 16 months round Europe on a bike, including some food, tools, tent, cooker, bedroll etc.....

Looking back over the last 17 years I'd have two major regrets that I wouldn't have known about had I not made choices.

First was meeting my Wife.
Second was getting into motorcycles.

I can't even imagine how dull life would be if either hadn't happened.
Cars are for A-B , Motorcycles are for the sole.

PS , ditch the bike knocking friends , you'll make new ones here , GF isn't into bikes ... then she's got to go .... Leave your uncle to wrap himself in cotton wool , watch tellie and armchair comment on how dangerous life is only to grow old and wonder about what if he actually lived life......

Ignore the anti bike patrol, they are typically made up of members who have never ridden a bike. Would you take medical advice from a diesel mechanic?, or career advice from an unemployed person?..... no, listen to those who know, and understand.

Some of them may have lost a friend/ family member to motorbikes, well whoop de doo, I lost 3 close family members to cancer in 3 years, but I dont avoid life for risk of getting cancer do I?.

Stuff them I say.

Which is exactly what I did only with a Beemer.

I sold my other bike and car to finance the Beemer and have not regretted it once.

The original plan was to, at some point buy a cheap little box-type car just to have one when needed.

That has changed now as I find that having my bike and the wifes car is fine.

I'm 41 now and an ex-car machanic and basically I'm totally bored with cars now, well all except for the sort of thing you see the boys on Topgear thrashing 'round in and they are WAY out of my budget so I'm gettin' my kicks on two wheels now and ain't looking back :)

Screw what others think, do what makes you happy 'cause you know what? life ain't a dress rehearsal.

Seriously, All the people that have negative things to say about biking have no idea what it is about.

Is there danger? You bet but its is your responcability to keep an eye out for it and be ready to react.
Will you make great mates? Hell yea and they will be mates for life.
Will your girl get over it? Probibly not but if she LOVES you she will understand and support you (tell her to buy her own car)
50k on a footpath? you deserve to loose a leg............
Wet in the rain? No way buy good gear.
We are all going to die someday
Buy a backpac or seat bag for carrying stuff

The lifestyle with a bike is fantastic but you have probibly worked that out already. Dont worry what anyone says about YOUR CHOICE after 20 years they will see it is not just a phase.

Never had that problem as I have always made sure that I've had both for the variety of reasons shown before and I've got too many sprogs to fit on my bike:crazy:
Wouldn't listen too much to what your mates etc have been saying as it is you that'll be riding the bike. Protect yourself well and enjoy the emmence pleasures that come from what a bike can get you no matter what style of bike and riding you're into.

Hmmmm ....... I seem to recall a chick getting hit and killed by a bus whikle crossing the street. Heard about another guy who drowned in his bathtub. Heard about another guy who got electrocuted while a sailing under power lines.

The point is, you can live your life in fear of everything that could kill you. You'd end up living in a windowless airless box and die anyway. Understand that people do care about you and don't understand your reasons for wanting to ride. If you're doing something stupid ie. riding at 50kmh on the footpath then the likelihood that'll you'll hurt yourself is going to be a lot higher than if you ride on the road taking due care to ride within your limits and the law.

I ride because I enjoy it. It's something I do. I don't do it for my wife, I don't do it because someone told me not to and I'm a rebel. I ride because I enjoy it.

I once sold my car to buy a bike and never regretted it, my brothers & sisters were all into bikes then too. they all grew out of bikes and bought cars but I didnt. Even when my daughter started kindy, I used to take her on the bike. Now I have 2 more kids I have no choice but to own a car as well. I still miss the days of only having a bike.
I think everyone here has said it already, only you can decide what you want. If we all did what everyone else wanted us to do then it would be pretty bloody boring.

Sell the car.. buy a good bike, good riding gear and a BRAND new helmet.

Ok transporting stuff on bikes.
I have carried on the back of my bike the following items - no not all at once.
A childs car seat.
A child's booster seat.
A child's old fashioned woooden high chair.
A dehumidifier.
A weedeater.
A spare front tyre.
3 sleeping bags all on top of each other.
Groceries every week.
Huge box filled up with stuff on many occassions.
Panier bags filled up, tent, bed roll, bag tied on the back and a tank bag.
A single bed sponge bed roll cover.

If I can't put it on the back of the bike and carry it... only then will I use my car.

So start looking at why you want a bike not at all the negative comments.
I had people tell me, that I would be killed, when I first got my bike.
Well its almost 6 years later (being back on a bike) and I am still alive..
They give up after a while, when you dont go having bins.

Get out there and enjoy the FREEDOM of riding.

I once sold my bikes to get a car due to a family on the way. Great having the car in that respect, but I missed the bike no end. If your having this much doubts sounds like you need a cage and once you can afford it buy a cheap bike. The only time I will consider using the cage is if Im transporting my son. I love bikes, but I love my son way more and there is no way Im putting him at risk by having him on one of my bikes.:crazy:

Tell them to fuck off. I had a bike as only mode of transport for a few months last winter and had no probs. Just as long as it's reliable. Had the mrs. car for groceries and all that - so if your gonna flick the car, make sure you pick up a chik with a car first. :hitcher:

hehehehehe Ok I would say as a learner if you like cruisers then start out with a VIRAGO 250 cruiser or the GN250...

But you maybe one who loves to own and ride sportbikes... and the others on here, can then recommend which sportbike is the way to go...

I've done the trade 2 times, and not regretted it at all.

If you know you enjoy motorcycling, and you know what to expect (to get wet sometimes, to bugs in your teeth sometimes etc).... then no - you'll be sweet.

Hey I spent 4 years wanting to get a bike and every time being put off by others, this year I finally thought "what the hell am I waiting for?". I have yet to tell all the doubters what I have done.......it will be a nice surprise when they come visit!

Good for you, and dont let the nay-sayers put you off, Riding is the one thing that I do that is completely about me and doing what I love to do. Like most people I am forced to make concessions in most other areas of life to some extent, but not when it comes to bikes. Tell everyone else to bugger off and live your life your way, the greatest regret is wishing you had done something you wanted to do but didnt have the guts to stand up for.

Nice work! My mrs didn't particuly like bikes, so I traded to a younger, taller, blonder one. But it's not looks that count here - she get's around on one of them 150cc scooter things and she's got bigger tits! :shit:

I once swapped an EIP Vauxhall for a 5T Speedtwin....my mate sold the bike for me and I never saw the money....Swapped a cherry sohc CB750 for a Singer Vogue that jumped out of 2 gears and smoked so much my wife got stopped and told her tyre was on fire.Sold a bike to pay for lawyers bills.I could go on for ages with my cunning deals,but I just do what seems a good idea at the time,never regret whatever you do....there was a reason I'm sure....

I have two cars & 1 bike, I guess you couldn't call me a true bikie, cos I only ride when the weathers not too bad,and for fun.
Riding bikes is a sole thing, man you can think of hundreds of safe reasons why you should drive a car, but the bike is for the soul, the buzz you get from a nice cruise or fast blast, getting home & polishing the bits,the feeling of being alive,
There are some things you have to do, before you get into the retirement homes, dont ever old and say .. "I would have loved to have had a bike, but...there was always something else" GET OUT THERE, GET YOUR BIKE, AND RIDE..............and bloody well enjoy every minute of it

I regretted trading my RD350 for a Hillman Imp - especially after finding out that five minutes work by a competent mechanic fixed the very simple fault that was causing the bike to run only on one cylinder (if I'd've been more experienced and known what to look for I could've fixed it myself in 5 minutes).

At the moment my bike is kaputt and I cannot afford another. We have a car as we have young kids to transport around (things will change once they are old enough to pillion) and I don't like driving it (nothing wrong with it in particular, it's a nice, reasonably late model Corolla - I just don't dig driving cars, dude) so StrayJ drives it most of the time.

I sit in the passenger seat looking out through the windsheild, imagining me on a bike out in front of the car and visualising the lines I'd take through the corners, imagining the feel of the bike under me and the feedback coming up through my hands. Am I addicted to biking or what!

As to load-carrying: Crap expands to fill the space provided.

I long ago solved the problem of carrying too heavy a pack up the mountains when camping by buying a smaller pack! A bike has less storage space than a car so you learn to take what you need, not what seems like a "neat idea". You can actually carry a fantastic amount of stuff on a bike if it suddenly becomes necessary - groceries, a large plastic soft-drink urn, all sorts of things.

I'll add my vote to the voices saying if I were riding a car I may not be here today - avoided a couple of near catastrophic accidents by taking the bike where a car just could not go. Could have been killed or seriously maimed, but I'm not.

When it all boils down to it, though, do things for your own reasons and be true to yourself. Others may disagree, but you're always going to get that. Best you can hope to achieve is a reputation for knowing your own mind and taking responsibilty for the consequences - they might not like your choice, but they can learn to respect it.

As always, be mindful of the risks and be ready to lessen them - the same goes for driving a car or crossing the road on foot or eating your food or handling power tools. Risk is all around, nowhere is "safe" (not even the grave, for worms can enter that).

If you really want a bike, get one. Learn to ride it safely and responsibly (no riding at 50kph on footpaths), get the proper gear to protect you and keep you warm and dry (you'll be the one laughing up your sleeve as you strip off wet armour to reveal dry clothes underneath while all the car drivers are drenched from running from their car to the building in a downpour), get whatever carrying gear you find is sufficient to carry what you need (be it a small back-pack or a pair of 15-litre paniers and a top box), and show them = by your continued existence, healthiness and happiness that your decision was right for you.

If your g/f doesn't like bikes, then that's her choice. She may discover she likes them if given the opportunity, she may not - people are like that. Compromise works fine - set aside your own time for riding (you do have your own time, I trust) and go places together in her car. Get her to drive and you can stare through the windsheild and visualise what lines you'd take on the corners...

You will lose some creature comfort such as protection from rain, convenient luggage space, etc. But they all can be worked around. Biking has gone a long way since what it was, and now we can do almost everything, except preventing wet boots wet gloves and wet crotch.
We just do it differently from car-people (e.g., larger rucksacks, weatherproof overalls, etc). I guess it is actually like "walking with significantly faster pace".

Girlfriend, wife and family (especially kids) are the normal factor for stopping to ride. Nowadays (since I'm married) I only ride to work when I don't take my missus to work, and ride in the weekend for riding only. For shopping etc I normally take my car, as my bike is not fit for riding 2 up (it's not about me, but it's about her)

For the mean time, here are some anwers you can use:

"why have u decided to get a bike? personally i wouldnt do it." - God has led me

"i know someone who knows someone who rode a scooter onto the footpath at 50km/h and lost his leg" - God must have a purpose for him

"what the hell would you want to get a bike for?" - I don't know. God moves in mysterious ways

"if it rains, you'll get wet... and you wont be able to take people anywhere!" - God will provide

"you'll regret buying a bike after you've had this car" - I will not regret following God's call

"dont be a fucking idiot, man you're going to die!" - God will call us. It's not for us to know when.

"where are you gonna keep your stuff when you go places?" - God will provide

In the mean time I am loving being back on two wheels, part of the apeal is there are only two seats (read NO KIDS).

I started riding a bike about 6 months ago, through the winter, which can get rather wet in AK, Sold my Mercedes S class and got my own bike as the one I started on was my Bro's.
I save $50/week in fuel, still have a car for carrying the kids and wife, I don't use it often.

Initially you will notice the negs, take extra care initially and they will change their minds.
Get good gear, multilayer, waterproof. I went into Kmart in Manukau earlier this evening and it started pissing down, others were crouding under cover, so I put my helmit back on and walked out, got on the bike and rode home, the only thing I get wet is my hands and I don't think they will shrink.
I've strapped computers etc on as required, I wondered how I would cope, don't need to carry all the stuff I used to carry around, I have a workmate that lives nearby, she drops it off(only twice so far).

Seeing the support that is on this website helped my wife to feel a lot happier and I showed her all the padding and armour in my suit which I always wear while riding.

The longer you go without binning the better everyone will feel, including you.

By the way, use a taxi if you need, will take a lot a taxi trips to pay for a car, no repairs, insurance, reg etc.
or
If you do need a car get a $300 corolla for the other half.????

Bandits are pretty cool looking bikes. Phurrball has one and is well pleased (except it's not as economical as his lady's FXR150. But then, many things aren't)

Not a bad price for a bandit and they seem to last long.
