New to the forum, so Hi!
I'm looking to sell my road bike ('99 ZX9R - put the word out) as a new baby forces sale - she's adamant!), but would like to get into Enduro, after 15 years off. Used to ride competition trials but would like to cover more ground. I live in Kerikeri where we have a KTM dealer so ideal bike would be a KTM450/525EXC. If you can help, or have a different opinion I'd like to hear it.
Cheers

Nah, not me. But wanted to use the shot as my profile shot - seem to have cocked it up though. what a forum virgin! Will have to study more.
Glad to see that the forum's pretty active. Hopefully some nice soul has an '04 KTM out there that they just might sell to me! Would love to keep the Kwak too, but I think the missus might have something to say about it!

Hey mate, I am interested... but it would be a cash deal (sadly ...) termed lightly - but a question - that wouldnt have been the 9r that was at shaws, fresh uk import?
Because if it is, I am off to the bank again...

No, this is my own bike. I brought it from the UK in 2000. I have owned it from brand new. To be honest, it's killing me to sell it. I've done every mile that it's turned and have really looked after it. I'll take some pics tomorrow in the sunshine so you can see it in all it's glory. It's metallic blue, I had a hugger fitted by the dealer when it was brought out of the box from new so even the shock's immaculate. I was running Bridgestone BT01's from new but fitted a dual compound BT02 on the rear for more life, with no sacrifice on cornering. I've just fitted a BT014 front (less than 100km ago) which is an awesome tyre and was developed to match the profile of both the 01's and the 02's. Not sure how much more I can tell you, but have a look at the pics and see what you think. Give me tuntil tomorrow (knock of work at lunchtime) to get the pics posted.

Anyone got any thoughts on a realistic alternative to the KTM? I want to have the ability to easily register and WOF it, so the Honda's are out. What about the Yams, Huskys, etc. Don't fancy a Kawasaki or a Suzuki.

The CRF250X and 450X are road legal, you just have to add indicators. Yamahas, Suzukis,Kawasakis and european bikes suck!

To be honest your very limited in this department. These new generation four strokes are just not meant for constant road use (BANG!). The older 4's like the XR, DR and KLX are pretty much indestructable but are as much fun as a pinecone up the ass. Saying this I had an '03 KTM350 EXC-R that I rode purely on the street (motard) for about 5 months with no issues at all other than a stretched chain.
If you were to get a KTM you would want a larger capacity e.g 510 or 525 so you're not revving the tits off of it.

Thanks, I know, I might be a bit limited in experience, I only have seventeen years experience riding off road (albeit mainly trials, however). All I want is a bike to get me to the local trails when needs be. My mate has a trailer for the rest of the time. Other than that, I was more looking for the relative merits of the current models coz I've been away for it for a couple of years.

Check out KTMtalk.com. If I was going diesel, a 450EXC would be my choice. KTM make great bikes.

Yes.... but we wouln't want too much power if he is only starting out riding.
a 250 thumper would still be the way. and also reliabilty is an important factor.

Chipster is a bike rider from way back and would have no problems with the power of the 450EXC. Very user friendly. Stay away from the 250's, too gutless unless your looking at the racing models then the reliability/maintanence issues become a factor and they are not made for road use and trail riding. Probably a KTM is the most reliable out of any of the big diesels, along side perhaps the WR400's. But the KTM comes with better quality parts and seeing as you have a local dealer would be the way to go I would think.
For what its worth, a friend of mine races a KTM SX525 and even that has very controllable easy to ride power. Everyone that buys an EXC250 diesel ends up putting a 350 kit in it, so just get the EXC450 and be done with it.

Yep, there are a couple of 525's I've looked at, they seem to come up for sale more often than the 450's. Some folk seem to think that they're a bit TOO grunty, and that the 450 does everything the 525 can do. That's probably partly true, but I weigh 100kg so figured that the 525 might haul me round OK, and that I should be strong enough. I've been riding for 25 years so should be OK to slot back into offroad mode. I can't wait! Might have to go and buy some new kit, I think I'll have grown out of my old stuff from when I was 20! :o/
In an ideal world I would definitely go for the 450, however it may have to be a 525. I'd be chuffed to have either! And the Husky was going to be my first choice (I looked at a couple in the Papakura shop) it's just that there's no dealer up here. Good fun looking around though...

Went for a spin last night on my mate's 450fe Husaberg last night. What a blast that was! Brought it all back, and man did it have some power! It's still being run in, so had to be a bit conservative with the right hand, but you can feel the potential. We were just on a local mx track, so lots of short bursts. Never used anything other than 2nd and 3rd and I was surprised how tractable these diesels are. Much better than the point and squirt strokers, althought I hear these have changed quite a bit from the 125 YZs and RM's of the early 90's that I was used to and now have a wider power band than 1000 rpm...!
Anyway, that's me sold on getting a 450 or similar. Can't wait to be able to get shot of my road bike now and go hunting for a dirt weapon...

Both 2 and 4 strokes have powerbands across the whole rev range these days, but on the diesel it's wider because they are now reving higher than a smoker, and yet still pull really well from low down.
KTMs models are just numbers and letters to me,I get all confused - but if you have a dealer there I reckon you can't go far wrong with one...although lack of dealer wouldn't worry me.Depends on what you think you can handle off road, more power is more fun,but takes more work to control - do you want to push a bike to it's full potential,or ride a bike you can't use? The 250s have half the service life of the 450s,something to think about. The smokers make serious power, have less weight and maintenance and last a long, long time these days, and beleive it or not are fun on road as well.
Me? Money no object,I'd have a Husky....
