OK as most of you know I crashed and wrote off my cbr250rr, its was a 1990 mc22 that had just under 30,000kms on the clock and was in pretty good nick. I am considering buying it back the insurance company hasn't given me a price yet but will have one buy Friday.
The damage to my bike that I know of is; Bent forks, bend radiator, smashed ferrings (every ferring is damaged in some way front ferring and main left ferring are both shattered), Tank is a goner, air box damaged, handle bars bent, clutch lever bent, wind screen smashed, mirrors smashed, head lights smashed, and instruments all stuffed, there are a few other little things, from what I know there is no damage to the motor it self.
Now I have a whole new set of ferrings but they need plastic welding and painting I have a friend who plastic welds so that's no problem and another who paints cars so that's taken care of, I also have a tank, windscreen, forks (one needs a new seal), second hand head lights and instruments all of which I obtained for $400, So that means All I need is; Radiator, handle bars, mirrors, lever and Other things that I don't know about yet.

So is it worth buying my bike back and putting it on the road again, or should I just cut my losses and buy a new bike?

Did ya end up down the hole with the bike?

As far as buying it back goes, have you got the cash to buy a new one and the messed up one? If so buy and ride, and fix up the other for a spare or flick it off. As long as you recover costs (pos. make a profit) then sweet.

Mate that things fucked, let it go, and shop around for something else,

by the time you buy it back, replace or straighten the forks, replace the tank, and replace the radiator, you could have bought another bike,..

Goblin

This is ONLY my opinion...with all the spare bits you already have, you could buy the wreck back...get it back together and set it up for the track, get yourself a racing licence and do all your hard out riding on the track. Buy yourself another(if you can afford it) for the road and take it easy on the road.
Whatever you decide, good luck with it.

NOOOOOOOO buy it, then ill buy it back off you

how much as it is do you think?

22nd December 2005, 09:12
Since you've got most of the parts required already and IF the insurance Co. doesn't want much for the wreck...buy it back for sure.
Judging by the pic's I reckon they won't want much for it due to condition and age.
A good cheap bike in the end....if not for you someone else

have you been told the reason it's been written off? If the frame is fukt, then I wouldn't bother. If it's bent or cracked, then it won't be road worthy. But saying that, you could make a mean gokart from it.

If the frame is ok, it then boils down to how much you have to spend and how much the insurance wants for it. If it's wiithin your budget, then fixing it up is a piece of piss. An afternoon's work at the worst, if you have all the parts. The biggest expense will the the plastics. Fairings can be costly for half decent ones. You could get a mix-match, and get them sprayed in a custom job, but remember your idea of custom, might be someone else's idea of crap, so you won't get as much resell value than if the fairings were stock. But you'd pay a premium for half decent sets.

Tank, forks, rad, clipons etc, is a quick trip around a couple of wreckers. Be a few hundy, but they're easy.

So to sum up - is the frame buggered? If not, can you afford to get it back on the road? If no and yes, then go for it. Else leave it and see what pay-out you get, and then buy something that isn't from a dealer so you can't get ripped again. The price you paid for that bike is criminal alone..

how much, I wont be able to give cash till after x-mas day I get my pay out on friday.

Mate that things fucked, let it go, and shop around for something else,

by the time you buy it back, replace or straighten the forks, replace the tank, and replace the radiator, you could have bought another bike,..I cant really afford to buy another nice 250 I will get about $5700 after my excess, I have new forks already but one needs a new seal thats no biggie, I also have a new tank.

I have got all the parts and will need another $500 in parts that $900, then buy back which will be around $600, im sure I can get it on the road easy, the frame is perfect...

texmo
22nd December 2005, 13:56
OK FUCKING HELL!
I have just spoken to my broker again, and insurance company said my bike isn't worth $6500 because they know all even though red baron said that's what its worth, so they are gonna get it re-valued by somebody else... My bike has only $5k worth of damage or something so may not be a write off and they have been offered $500 for the wreck so far... the insurance company also said its taking a while to get my driving record from the LTSA and that's holding them up!

I mean I pay like $2k in insurance and they still fuck me around.

WRT
22nd December 2005, 14:09
Argue it with them. I had to with state, was well worth it in the end. Get another valuation done by an independant 3rd party, it may mean that you have to wait to get the money, but better than taking what they offer you. Dont be surprised if their valuation comes in at something like 3k, be prepared for it, dont get angry with them, just find out what you need to do to contest their valuation. When they valued mine, the assessor didnt even go out and look at the bike, they just plucked a figure from thin air and hoped I would accept it.

Get your own valuations done, and ARGUE IT! Keep a level head when dealing with them, but fight it!

John

and the problem is, if it is a write off then your going to go through a few hard years if you live anything like me.

ps if you buy it back sell it to me because I want it to do burnouts on, by on I mean get my bike and burn some rubber all over the gay honda shit.

pyrocam
23rd December 2005, 15:01
insurance standard is if its more than 75% of the pre-accident valuation then its a write off.

yeah getting a driving history can take up to something like 4 weeks (one of mine to 8)

NinjaBoy
23rd December 2005, 21:38
Yer well there is $5k damage and they are considering putting it back on the raod for me

and they are contesting its worth $6.5K? Doesn't make any sense they want to put it back on the road. I've had far less damage on my bins and my insurance coy were really quick to assess a write-off.

23rd December 2005, 22:13
Good luck with the inurance company.

My old gsxr got written off but with bugger all damage (was only valued at 2500) the 3rd partys insurance company paid out and I got my bike back for 50 bucks. Spent a couple hundred on it and got it road worthy again. However it did take 5 months to get the bloody money off the bastards(Tower).

Hope all this shyte is sorted out before the summer really starts. I'd suspect that you'll be waiting over the Xmas period anyhow. Bike does not look too bad in the picture, but you never know exactly what your going to end up in the end. If it has had a big knock then the motor could be screwed in 12 months or there abouts. Had a 4WD hit one of my old cars from behind, 15 months later the gearbox is playing up and the motor is not too happy.. Either way I hope you get back on the road soon without too many more hassles.

thats good advice WRT. Remember folks, insurance companies make money by taking yours, and then NOT paying out.

its not a co-operative society, they are rapacious capitalist pricks. and the claims staff are card carrying National Socialists, or their offspring.

like the man says, keep a level head though. also, send them faxes and emails (i.e. keep records of correspondence) and be prepared to argue (you are within Disputes Tribunal jurisdiction, although thats a bloody lottery as well).

I wouldn't buy it back but if you are really keen on a project this would be great! Could learn alot from it.
But if you do decide to buy it back to sell off and not fix it, I could be keen on the engine

Hey

Just speaking from experience... My ZXR had less damage than your CBR (by the looks of things) and so far I've spent over $3800 getting it fixed, yours looks like it'll cost more than that...

Hence I voted no.

The insurance company offers really low prices on buy backs from my experiance any way.

I crashed my 89 cbr250r a few weeks ago and the insurance has offered it for $250.It has a brand new rear tyre which I payed $200 for.Brand new x ring chain and new sprokets $170 and the engine and gear box are fine.

Is there much of a demand for engines?

Yes I remember that one, my first KB ride. It was a BLACKYOSHI coro loop. Fark it was fun. Met some cool people and there was also these dodgey looking guys that looked like they had come straight from Te-Aroha or something. Some poor guy binned in the first few kays just down the road at drury. Weestromer and I helped put texmos wreck up onto the ute. Texmo was in the ambulance. Goblin was fussing over his well-being with a knowing look in her eye. That was the day 2much took the plunge and decided he should buy a Gixxer. The local Tairua Rozzer was also a good helpful bastard. Think it was ZRXers first KB ride too..?
