View Full Version : Curse of the SV - Strikes Again!

Yes, Uncle Bruce (V-Twin) went for a ride again today.......:devil2:

As we fueled up at the Caltex Rimutakas, ready for a good blat over the hill. A noobie rider turned up and started chatting with us.
Turns out he's new to Wellington, just moved here from Christchurch.
I asked him if he's ridden the Rimutakas yet, he replied no. I asked if he'd heard of them, again no.
So I invited him to join us for a blat.
Now this guy looked about 20-22, riding a RG150. he explained to me that he's ridden for two years, incident free.
Now considering that our group of riders are considerably larger in CC size, I gave him a spiel about the Takas.

"Takas are about 12 minutes away, when you see us guys start to nail it, you'll now you've reached the beginning. Take it easy and go at your own pace - don't try to keep it, you've never ridden the road so take the first one easy. We will regroup at the summit of the hill, you'll see the bikes parked up, just pull in."

As we rode off, I kept a fairly close eye on the guy in my mirror. I instantly noticed he didn't freely overtake cars as the rest of us did. I figured he was more in a car drivers mindset, more hesistant with overtaking. I thought either this guy is a very safety conscious rider or he's just relatively new to motorcycling. So I watched as the other two pressed further ahead, I sort of lingered not wanting him to feel all alone. He soon caught up.

Eventually we hit the start of the takas. I nailed it as did Bruce (SV1000) and Peter (GSXR600). We made good time to the summit.
We waited for our new friend but he didn't show.
We rode down the hill in search of him. half way down we saw a RG150 leaning against a fence, the wheel completely buckled, radiator pissing out fluid, plastic & glass here and there and the solid mounting between the handlebars cracked in half. Holy Crap, where is he???

Turned out he was alright, we heard from a passing motorist that he'd been taken to his mums job, she being a nurse at a local retirement home,Bruce and I went to find him to make sure he was OK. We visited the home, then traced him to a medical centre, then an after hours medical centre - then a phonecall revealed he was alright and back at the crashsite.

Turned out he'd lost it going into a corner, fishtailed and hit a barrier, sliding along it for 10 metres before coming off and rolling uphill another 10 metres.
Thankfully, he only had a sore leg. I did feel it was dissapointing after giving him the spiel. I don't think he was trying to keep up as we we're quite simply - gone! He wiped out on the first corner that tightens pretty hard and keeps tightening. He just wasn't expecting it.

The guys pretty bloody lucky, I didn't notice but apparantly he rode with no gloves and his gear was no good i.e. trackpants.

I did tell the guy about Kiwibikers, hopefully he'll reside here soon enough, sorry we didn't end up catching up with you, perhaps we will stop by over christmas and check out the recovery process. It's a shame because he seemed like a very nice bloke who was keen to meet some fellow bikers, I mentioned Helen and Skels etc, who'd be a good group for him to hang out with.

I hope he gets back on the road and hopefully he'll be keen enough to follow right behind me or Skelstar next time around for a slow paced guided ride up the hill.

Anyway - Thats another one for the WGTN SV Curse!
the sooner we force Bruce to buy the K6 Gixxer the better! This curse is getting out of hand.

P.S. Christchurch riders huh?:violin: Feel the power of the Takas! :headbang:

ugh got to be careful on roads you don't know. If you take them too fast and they tighten....

I woulda made it :shifty:

Damn. I wish there was something that could be done to keep new riders from having these expensive and painful lessons.
Lucky he wasn't badly hurt.

Seems to be when ever there's a crash an SV will be lurking in the background.

Dafe, thats not good. Looks like he needs a bit of education gear wise too. Good on ya guys for looking out for him after the incident...

Im going to propose another newbie ride like I went on when I was introduced to KB. Reckon theres some new members that could benefit from a nice easy ride over the hill. I know I learnt a lot that day.

I was going to ask VTWIN, Dafe, Jim2 etc to lead the ride and perhaps mentor. Havent talked to Jim2 yet...

Yeah dude, I'm all keen for that!
Some one-on-one training will definately be the goer for our noobies.
If you can arrange the ride, just PM me, I'll be there.
We haven't done one of these for a while now so lets make it happen!

Of course not! Isn't it just ironic though how the last four Wellington Kiwibiker accidents have featured a Blue SV1000 in their presence.

Willing to give it shot, provided Uncle Bruce ditches the SV O' Negative Karma.

The poor bugger wasn't even in sight and he still got hexed.

No more talk of the curse or no newbies will turn up at all.

Jim....remember, no fluro.....ok.....got it.

Oooo I don't know about that. My helmet has Fluoro orange on it and the Z750 is pretty bright.

ow fuck, being my first ride over the takas the other night with you guys i nearly did that twice but managed to keep it under wraps, i found it hard to know what speed to go at around there.

im a bit scared now thinking that im heading over there on boxing day by myself, im going to be bloody careful too cos of this and cos my boss has flowen over there before in gliders and planes and he says there are actually lots of cars sitting at the bottom.

is it really a jinx of the SV ?? all I know is every accident that Ive seen or heard about down hear in welly Bruce or Dave are there..........not saying anything mind you ..........might not be you two just a suzuki curse........
I got to the scene after the accident and Im surprised that guy was alright. Very Lucky.
oh and keep an eye out for the gravel on the uphill side of the 2nd or third corner . If your thrashing it you wont see it till your in it.

For the Newbies!

The most useful - single piece of information I have.........

When you're in the shit and you're coming into a corner too hot (too fast). There is always a time where you have to let your brakes go and just turn into the corner, no matter how hard you're going!
Holding the brakes on real hard will just stand up your bike and take you straight off the road.

Next time you're in this situation........

Brake until the last opportunity to lean into the corner, then at whatever speed you're doing - Just let the brakes go, Lean into the corner and most importantly - Look to the apex!

This has saved my arse twice recently!

You Newbie riders will be suprised how easily you'll pull through! Probably %95 of the time if not more. Some of you will have no idea that your bike could handle the situation so easily.

Think about this alot!!!! Because if you do, this will sit on the edge of your mind, and when that situation thrusts upon you next time, you'll recall immediately what to do. Think about it everytime you go into a corner hot too. It won't always be neccesary but it will often help you in taking corners faster - safer too.

We will definately cover this topic on the Wellington Newbie ride in January.

Best Xmas Wishes & Be Safe!

what about cornering lines? I think the technique of staying wide until you can see the corner exit is a good piece of advice. It means you have to go a bit slower, but prevents you from apexing early and running out of road if the corner continues further than anticipated.

Some scanned pages from Proficient Motorcycling on cornering:

...This has saved my arse twice recently!...
This is soo embarrasing. The situations that Dafe is referring to is when he was trying to keep up with me! I slowed down to keep him in my mirrors as I was a bit worried he might be trying to keep up...he just leant in harder which is what I taught him to do. Good lad.

Merry Xmas Dafe! :)

what dafe said, i've done that before [the letting off the brakes part] on the gn over the takas, i was carying a decent amount of speed [down hill obviously] and fount that i had been riding the wee shiter too hard or to uselessly [probably the former] and the drum had over heated:pinch: so all gn riders, look out for that rear drum or be prepared to fold your pegs up:niceone:

also sometimes downshifting will fuck it all up the arse too, i have down shifted a bit roughly on both bros and gn and got the back to lock up and/or unsettle and woble.

scary shit.

i need to get taught by some decent riders......:first:

Damn, And here I was thinking Brian Bernard taught me that on a trackday training!

Perhaps in a round about way - You taught Brian Bernard that and he passed it down to me - thus the link!

I knew somebody was gonna say -"What about blah blah blah........."

WHEN SHIT HITS THE FAN!!!! i.e. The line is already taken!!!!!
and you're going in too hot! (Too fast!)........

You don't get to rechoose your entry line!!!

I also said "One Piece of advice" because there are farkloads of things you can do, bits of advice etc but I can't be farked writing them all down - Go buy Graeme Allerdices book "The riders Bible!", but when you have a half second decision left, I'm saying don't panic and bring the bike upright as many newbies do..... Lean into the corner and Look to the apex!

Good day up at Wangas.

My bike's sparky lead f*cked out this morning so I had to DRIVE up in my folks car. Despite a reduced passing opportunity vehicle it as still a nice drive. Not as much fun though.

Big thanks to Deanno, Drew, Nic and NC 30 (and others) for having a crack at fixing my bike.

Had a good time hanging with JK, Vas, and Velox...thanks guys.

Sorry you couldn't join us for the ride. And no, the group didn't wait for me and Dafe at the BP. I didn't catch up till Bulls, fortunately on the way up, not back.

Sorry I couldn't give you a dub. My bikes overloaded with me on it already:)
