Some nice stuff alright,there's Hailwwod on the 6,a good one of Ago on the MV,then Phill Read chasing on a yamaha behind.How come with much superior sound recording and reproduction,vastly improved motorcycles....they just don't have that spine chilling sound?

I have that tape , its hailwoods 6 going over the mountain at the Island ,,,the thing I like about it is , you can hear most everyone shut off the throttle ,,,all except hailwood ,,,I cant hear that throttle change ,,,and I know that road ...that man had balls ,,,,big ones

My Dad used to take me to the TTs, for the last day, to see the 125 and 500 races. I'm so grateful that he did that for me. I was only 13-16 and didn't know much about racing but it was the highlight of the year.
I saw Jim Redman come off his bike and it went spinning up the road. As he ran towards it, he saw the people next to me drinking a bottle of lemonade and he held his hands out for it. Took a long swig, handed it back the on his bike and away = priceless.
Saw Mike the Bike fall off his bike and crack the fairing. coming down the mountain. He kicked off the screen and went on to win.
Nice time of year to think about my long since dead Dad.

The sound of that Honda Yamaha 125 is pretty awesome, when you consider the Honda is a 125 four-cylinder pulling 20,000rpm + !!!!

and the 50cc twin RC-116 going down through it's 9-speed gearbox !!!
It's output is 16hp at 21,000rpm !!!
and because of this, do you realise that the 50 twin has a hp figure of 320bhp/litre which has not been surpassed by a naturally-aspirated motor ever, Formula 1 included !!!!

You had me excited for a while there. Hey theres only one old bike on the list.
A 1949 Norton ES2, all the rest are modern bikes!

I'm probably totally wrong here but I reckoned those 50 cc bikes had more than 20 gears. I've heard them live as well as recorded and I'm sure I heard a $hitload more than 9 downchanges at some corners.
That Matchless sounds like a man, not a boy.
The Honda 6 cylinder 250 was awesome. The Japanese makers saw there was no restrictions for racing bikes and muscled the Europeans out of the way making such huge developments in biking that they'd never be able to compete. I had a Honda 125, 2 cylinder with DOHC and needle roller bearings for the camshafts. How over the top was that for a normal road bike.
Like Nudemetalz says, those bikes were a pinnacle of development (and excitement) - 40 years ago!

Here's a pic of the Honda RC-116 50cc Twin and the spec's for it.

Pretty amazing and definitely states 9 gears.

What you're thinking of is the Suzuki RK-67 which was a 50cc twin 2-stroke which had 14 gears !!

BTW, did you have a CR-93 ?

Yes, the Suzuki and Yamaha 50 cc two strokes had more gears.
I had a cr93 for a short while - well borrowed it, really then had a Honda CB92R Benly for a few years. So much fun, those bikes.

Hugh Anderson rode one of the Suzuki's at one of the Classic meetings,I'm pretty sure it had 14 speeds and you could hear it all the way around Puke,constantly changing gear.

the 125 Honda was a 5 cylinder - basically - 2 1/2 50cc twins!!!!
The yam was a 125 cc V4 two stroke (of course)

Agreed but the Yamaha/Honda did sound like the 125 four-cylinder bike (RC146).

The five cylinder one (RC-148) sounds quite different to the four.

Interesting detail about the 5 cylinder model - on the crankshaft, the left 3 cylinders were 120 degrees apart, and the right 2 cylinders (seperated by the gear cam drive) were 180 degrees apart - in effect a triple crank and a twin crank joined together.

The Honda 5cylinder was the RC149 raced by Luigi Taveri in 1966 it produced 34hp @20500rpm

HA-HA wondered what you were on about, I've searched most places i know of & also done a cluster search through Vivisimo clustering engine & can't find any audio on the Laverda damn it! it would be amazing to hear it on song!

the 7R was my old mans used to race it at the likes of Cust, Halswell 100, Ruapuna & Wigram, Waimate etc competed in the NZ GP a few times with it also

most of the road racing was on shingle roads in those days not the nice smooth tar-seal we have now.

Ha suppose it has but the old man wasn't that much of a boy-racer, had NZ #20 plate & mixed with the best the country.
