What do you reckon is wrong with this and what needs to be done to fix the problem and how much to fix it?

February till lisence but have my basic skills test thing already done. Looking at this one too but dad's not too sure. It shouldn't be leaking oil out of the exhaust pipe and it shouldn't smoke either. It's probably running too rich so that's why it's not starting properly. But Mike knows FZR's inside out so it shouldn't be a problem to fix...

My 2c mate, start on a single! Pref the likes of a gn, they are cheap and very forgiving, i know you can ride well on the track, but the road is a whole new game, just ask your dad. Honestly, a 4cyc 250 straight off the mark isnt the best plan. I would get a crapper for the learners period, then buy your 250 sprots bike when you get your restricted.
If you want an idea of what a 250 single is like, you can have a blat on Samantha's GN anytime you like.
Just my 2c mate, not intended as a lecture!

I wouldn't be seen by my mates, parents, family or any other KBer DEAD on a GN but thanks for the offer anyway. I might take you up on it just to get used to riding on a bike with indicators and shit so I can use 'em. I understand where you're coming from but financially it's not the best for me. I would rather get a bike and be done with it untill I can get a bigger one, or I wreck it.
I know that a 4cylinder 4 stroke 250 has a fair bit of power but the point of me getting a bike and not a cage is so I don't get into the drinking then driving thing and/or carrying passengers on L/Restricted. Also I will be a lot more vulnerable(sp?) on a bike so I will be more careful until I'm used to how much power the fucker has. Where as in a car I would have a whole lot of metal "protecting" me and I would go stupid.

Under $3000 definately but ideally between $1500-$2500. When are ya free or something and we can catch up, find a big wide open concrete space.

I'm going away tomorrow and won't be back till the 3rd. Got work like every 3rd day from 12-3 but otherwise I'm usually free. Is it better for me to go to you, you come to me or meet somewhere? Tamatea High is just around the corner and that'd be allright but not sure what's best for you.

If you're set on that fzr. Make sure you check for flatspots. I know I've said this before, but it's a fairly common problem on the 2krs atleast.

No its not, you got a lemon. Since MissSniper has had her bike, there hasn't been one problem except due to me. And I have ridden 3 other 2kr's with no flatspots or problems.

Well I've read otherwise on other forums + personal experiance + pretty much every bike mechanic I've talked to about them.
It doens't really matter, I'm just trying to forewarn hXc here so he doens't end up with a lemon.
Yay for 900th post!

If you have experience racing competitively you should be more than capable to handle a 250 sportbike. They're easy bikes to ride as the power is predictable and the handling is quick and responsive. Anyone that can handle a bike under racing conditions will easily handle a 250 out on the road. I don't think it's nessesary to get a small single first unless you're totally new to biking
Just don't go for an expensive bike from the dealer and try get a resonabley cheap bike like that FZR to start with
