View Full Version : The Cheese Cutters are doing their job.

Doing SH1 every day I've seen a big increase in the cheese cutters getting damaged. This morning I see a car parked on the median just north of Dury,a couple of cop cars in attendance,3 car lengths of posts out.Just north of Te Kauwhata I see tyre marks spear off at 45 deg and smashed posts,2 or 3 other places with posts out - this is a big increase to happen over just a few days.

Without the cheese cutters these would be head ons, with the amount of traffic on the roads they'd be lucky not to take another vehicle out....and the people inside.I got a different view of them now - it could of been me on the other side of the road.

I would still prefer them covered like they do (apparently) in Sweden, or somewhere near there... or something. Whatsit.

Are cheese cutters the wire rope and metal stake fences between the lanes?.

They sure are. Good for keeping vehicles on their side of the road. But NOT good for motorcyclists' bodies.

So does anyone actually know a motorcyclist that has crashed into these things? Not the "my mates sisters dogs cat told my girlfreinds fathers uncle john that once...." Actual first hand knowledge of a friend or aquaintance?

I haven't heard of anyone yet, but then a lot of accidents don't get reported.
If there hasn't been anyone into them, it'll be a tribute to most bikers ability rather than anything Transhit has done.

Let's hope no one rides into one lol :eek5:
But personaly I'd be more scared of someone going head-on into me :spudwave: bye bye Indy

Actual first hand knowledge of a friend or aquaintance?Yep. Saw someone bin it right in front of me. But he only kinda brushed the cheese cutters a couple of times, rather than a full on hit into them. The cheese cutters didn't do any damage to him on that occasion. Might not have been so pretty if he'd taken it at a more acute angle.

exactly why they give me the shits!

I agree, those wire barriers are working really well. I saw a video, possibly on the news or Sky of crash test vehicles hitting it, and they function as intended - stopping the vehicle crossing the centre line. And again, for cars, they look like a "softer" option to concrete barriers.

I also seem to recall seeing a piece of it somewhere in Welly area that was hit, and they seem to hold their shape even after impact. The car takes out a few of the upright pegs and the ones left standing on either side hold the general shape of the now unsupported wire in the middle.

Motorbikes are another story though! Can you imagine what would happen if you crashed into one, got your leg caught at the point of impact, and the rest of you kept going?:spudgrr: I'm with skunk (I THINK it was), put a cover over the chicken wire. They will save money in the long run, as ACC have to pay more for missing limbs!

so ride properly around them , they do work and id rather slow down around them if need be they do a good job and if ltsa did nothing to these dangerous stretches of road we would complain about that too

was worried as i headed down to hamilton the other day and saw a section damaged with tyre marks leading up to the cutter and looked to be over the other side. or there were skid marks inline with the opossing.
but they do worry me and they do make me slow down, so i suppose it's not a bad thing.

i dont believe that ther should be any motrcycle crashes along them, because in general they are on stright (ish) roads and if a little care is taken while riding past them.

Of course there is gonna be the 'fluke' accidents that happen, and thats life, get used to it.

so well done to the guy who thought these up. its a shit load better than a car hitting you head on at 100 kph.

Cheers, Glenn

I always get the impression that the cheese cutters would do a hell of a lot of damage to a car too- sort of grab them and make them spin, whereas with a concrete one they would just slade along the egde. Is that not the case?

The little bit they've got north of Pukerua Bay has done it's job real well on a half dozen different occasions so far. And they've decided to extend it almost to Paekakariki from where it is now. Kept a whole lotta people safe it has.

They are a cheap option. Crash barriers are safer from our point of view. I tend to give them some respect but I would hate to be rear ended into one or hit a diesal spill. But they are better than nothing.

I bet if a motorbike hit them seriously it WOULD get reported!!!

And like the visible lion lurking - people are more careful when they see a percieved danger (riding near 'cheese-cutters = the lurking lion).

i havent seen anyone hit the cheese cutters yet but i have seen several people [cages and one bike] hit the barrier in the middle of wainui hill....

i saw a skyline go up the barrier as he was carrying too much speed as you come upi the hill from wanui the second corner. his car fliped and rolled right at our car aimed where i was sitting. rather scary shit.

i saw my mate bin it on the hutt side and that wasnt too pretty. but if it was cheese cutters on the wanui hill.... fuck that:puke:

I don't entirely get the objection to these.
Sure, they are probably more dangerous than a concrete barrier or a wall of pillows or marshmallows but so are power poles, six wire fences and vehicles crossing the centre-line into my lane..............
Surely it's just our responsibility to make sure we don't drive into them?
