Finally got a bike again. 1986 Honda VFR 750 in rather mint condition. Far and away the oldest bike I've owned. Whilst it's not really a fair comparison due to the age of the viffer it's not a patch on the 1998 TDM [1] I had. The engine is torquier, much more powerful but it lacks a little "character" and the fuel economy is nowhere near as good, the handling is good but again it's a bit 80's, the brakes are OK (maybe the anti-dive...but the again the TDM comes with FZR brakes and I'd changed mine for R6 bluespots), finish in general (and especially the engine paint) seems a lot better than the TDM though.

Biggest downer for me is how uncomfortable the VFR is for my 6ft 4 frame. I guess I'm getting old.

[1] Did they import them over here? I've only sportted the mark 1 850's or the mark 3 900's.

Give Badlieutenant a buzz: he has a lovely VFR 750f of the same vintage! I think it's a great bike, but what do I know?
Actually, he (and his viffer) is up north at the moment, so if you're interested in hooking up with him on his way back down to Welly, PM me and I'll try to put you in touch (crappy mobile coverage where he is just now...).

On ya man, I had a 86 VFR not so long ago it was a 2nd bike for anyone to use, it had 140,000km on it and ran so sweet removed the cam covers after I got it and all the hardening still looked new.... post a pic of it, ohh and is it white?

Ummmm - isn't scracha saying he doesn't really like the VFR???? Or, at least, wouldn't mind swapping to a Tedium????

Yeah, there are TDM's around, but not often seen for sale. Most of those who knock them have not actually ridden one...

Ach...it's a late mark 1 though. Looks like the "facelift" model (attached) never made it over here. As What? said...most TDM knockers haven't ridden them....they handle good on bumpy roads and are comfier than any proper tourer I've ridden. Not many around as when new they cost about the same as a Fazer 1000 so most peeps go for the bike with double the power. Stacks of them on the continent though.

If I was 5ft 8" I'd love the VFR. Still..beggars can't be choosers. And yes, it's white with the sticky out indicators. Got the single seathump cover thingie too. Piccies will follow.

Engine is a bloody peach....scooby driving kiddies at Whangamata looked silly on the twisty coromandel roads and I never even had to go above 120. Centre stand scrawps early though doesn't it? (at least .... I hope it was the centre stand).

Now if someone could stick a VFR motor in a TDM frame :Punk:
