Trail rides around christchurch?

Hello,

does anyone know of any trail rides coming up around christchurch/canterbury any time soon. i did my first one a couple of months ago and had the biggest grin for weeks later. so im trying to find another one to do?

Check with the bike shops,either DAS in Saxon st or Superior in Cashel would probably be best as they are dirt orientated, there is normally one a month somewhere in the area

When I lived down there in the 70's we were always going out to the Waimak near McLeans Island. I was down there on holiday last week and checked it out in my 4x4 and I see the blowhards have struck and its all wired off into separate areas now with bikes able to go one way and a 4x4 track another way. In the good old days we could all go everywhere including riding in the trees which I see were wired off now. So how good is the bit they have left for bikes now? I used to have immense fun out there in those days. Also I enjoyed riding the "line of the summit road" there were a few locked gates (presumably illegally so) but we used to lift our bikes over the gates. That would be easy with a CRF as long as there are two of you.

The other thing is trailer your bike to Lake Taylor and ride into the Lake Sumner Forest Park, which I understand is still open to bikes provided you arrange access with DOC in advance. In my day down there it was free access, now I understand only so many are allowed in at a time and you need a key to the gates. The rides up there are fantastic and still rate in my memory. Remember I posted a few pics a while ago as attached. OK they are winter shots, but it will still be fantastic now. We used to go almost to Harper Pass and back to Lake Taylor for a good days ride. First few are of Lake Sumner area, the rest are "wanking at the Waimak". Great bikes we had in the 70's eh!

there are still plenty of good trails there. its good though having the 4x4 in a seperate area because then you need not worry about coming head on with one around a corner( but still need to be carefull of other bikes!!!)

Hey merv, just came across this old post of yours and man did that bring back some awesome memories of the freedom and space that was available back then, I used to go and ride out there too starting from the later 70's and still today!.
Did you ever get way upstream and come across in the forestry the old shed that housed the army vehicles, I think think there was a tank and other stuff in there, I'd love to try and identify where exactly it was? any ideas?

Okay found where this was in the forums because it first popped up in my PM Inbox and I replied to you there. Are you talking about upstream on the Waimak or upstream from Lake Sumner? Either way I don't remember the army vehicles.
