View Full Version : Rider training day on a racetrack.

Another KBer suggested this as an idea.
We have some very experienced and quick racers and riders here.
we also have some folks either rusty being born again bikers or new to biking.
He has suggested a fast riding training day.
The deal would be for example 10 or 15 riders who feel they need to improve their road skills would pool their money to pay to hire a ractrack.
They would then each get an experienced rider to buddy up with them.
The experienced rider would NOT pay for tracktime as they would be acting as an instructor.
Id suggest having 5-8 students on the track at a time-with 10-15 minute sessions meaning 10-16 bikes
My gut feeling though is that manfeild is the only north island track offering sufficient variety of corners -ie once rights have been sorted we can reverse direction and do lefts.
The idea has real merit I feel
The cost per student would probably be about $100 each given NO emergency services/marshalls etc.

For those of you near the Manfield Track. Both Shaun Harris & Brian Bernard are available to hire for track training as a group.

Basic idea was to speed up the learning process for returnees and newbees by providing one to one coaching and in return the "coachers" would get free track time.
It was my experience motor racing that sometimes huge gains could be made in quite a short space of time by having one person dedicated to analysing your style and performance. Time and money is precious to us all and since we have a huge pool of talent on this site, it might be a way to maximise the gains for time and money spent on trying to improve our skills and, I for one, have no problem at all being coached by someone much younger the me. You take your lessons from where you need to.
The idea was not for race training (this is already available) but to improve our bike handling skills to make road riding and track days safer and more satisfying.

Weren't all the things mentioned here to be covered in SpeedMedics rider training day sometime in Feb-March??? The one with the TradeMe auctions.......

Could be a good Idea to have a " Show & Tell on how to setup your suspenion for those that have little to no Cue as to what it does & how it effect their bike as well ! All well a good taking people to a track to improve their Skills but abit Dangerous if their bikes are not set up to cope with the speeds that you get up to while racing round the Track . Just something I don't see getting done on any of these Track days that I have noticed .

Both Shaun Harris & Brian Bernard are available

Pfft so is Whitetrash and Me but then i could be full of shit again. But also they are available at a cost, where as i'd do it for love and trash a box of Stenies (maybe two boxes)

I'd be a goer Tony, sounds like a good idea mate. Even Taupo would be aight and do that in reverse, interesting, mind you the new cricut if that was just to be hired looks the bizzo as well.

Shit, I'd do it for free. Not enough people crashing on here, they need to learn how to do it properly.

So you wouldn't be doing it to trash the shit out of everybodies bikes? We know you Jimmy!
Maybe you should run a wheelie day........ You might just have to make it a week with the number of loonies keen to participate.

Guys Im not suggesting RACE training here -The idea is to use the track as just another road but with no cars etc
Its just logisticly impossible to do on a normal track day
Id suggest as a format perhaps
A few laps to get an idea of what direction the track goes in for the students.
A walk around the track for the students stopping at each corner- a couple of instructors with them to talk em through the corners -at that point id suggest most of the instructors be on the track circulating at med pace to show lines, braking points etc
Then 1 on 1 instruction -with possibly an instructor watching each corner to see anything the other guys miss

FROSTY
6th January 2006, 20:32
ok Im gonna put up a poll to see how many are interested.
I'd suggest though the "students" would be paying around $100 each

VasalineWarrior

Fuggin aye when do we start? If experienced people like loosebruce and whitetrash with lots of track experience could do it for a few boxes of beers that would keep costs down, and that would be graet for a broke ass student like me

on manfield.. Couple of things though...

1. licences. I still only have my restricted. Is there going to be rules on appropriate licences for the bike?

2. Taping up the bike. Would there be rules about taping up the lights and removing mirrors and the stuff you have to "normally" do on a track day?

Folks--Im keen to get this as a happening thing
Taupo is a maybee -but its gonna be $110 per trainee on the small track.
based on 15 trainees.

Tony i'm sure even the "instructors" (using term loosely if me and trashy are involved) would front up a bit of cash as well to help bring that figure ($110) down.

If it's going to be 15 then I'd probably step aside unless there's a definite free spot. I'm of the opinion that almost everyone could use some help with their riding, but some more than others. Really all I'm after is clearing up any rough edges to my riding and seeing what I can improve. Basically, I don't any learner/restricted license people missing out because of me.

Just let me know when and where.

Is it possible to get a Saturday booking??

If yes, I'll put my name down and can pay ASAneeded.

Edit: When would you like to have this happen?? Feb - March??

I wouldnt mind doing one of these as race training -

I dont need any help for road riding, but would love to do something with people like WT, LB, Two smoker, KK, Motoracer, frosty, etc etc watching and helping out.

Trouble is, do we have 15 inexperienced racers like myself who need helping out, and then have enough fast experienced racers to instruct?

loosebruce
19th January 2006, 01:28

Me and trashy are worth at least 10 experianced riders, maybe 12 if trashy hasn't already downed the crate of stenie's before we start, that raving homo Dss3 might be keen too.

Point by JSG what day you looking at Tony?

I'm fine for the road, but I want to know where I can pick up more points. If that's a worthy time, then I'd love to. If not, I'll step aside..

the fact that you do the same thing again and again is great for sorting out lines, braking etc
