i am looking at buying something online off trademe but it says that it is for authenticated members only......Authentication is not just for the purpose of seller's fees, but is beneficial for all parties involved and is supposed to increase your trustworthiness on TM, besides you get a number of additional features by being authenticated.

Excerpt from TM site:

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=450 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="99%">Becoming authenticated</TD></TR><TR><TD><HR color=#cccccc SIZE=0>We recommend that members become authenticated to prove they are serious about trading. You must be authenticated to sell. Authenticated members have red stars http://www.trademe.co.nz/images/star.gif beside their name.

Used in combination with a member's feedback (http://www.trademe.co.nz/STRUCTURE/HELPDOCS/DEFAULT.ASP?help_id=362), authenticated traders are more trusted than non-authenticated members. The number of stars next to a trader's name represents their feedback rating. The more feedback, the more stars - read more (http://www.trademe.co.nz/STRUCTURE/HELPDOCS/DEFAULT.ASP?help_id=362).

To become an authenticated member on Trade Me (and get your first red star http://www.trademe.co.nz/images/star.gif) you need to credit your Trade Me account (http://www.trademe.co.nz/STRUCTURE/HELPDOCS/DEFAULT.ASP?help_id=120) with a minimum of $10.

Authenticated members have additional features available to them on Trade Me. These include being able to:

Place a listing
Place bids over $5000
Purchase items using 'buy now'
Place bids on as many auctions as you choose
Use the question and answer feature
Build a trust-web (http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/view_member_trust_reln.asp) to indicate the members that you trust, and to blacklist the members you don't (note: members you blacklist are unable to bid on your auctions)
Remove the lead bids from your auctions (members with two or more stars only). The money credited to your Trade Me account is used to pay success fees (http://www.trademe.co.nz/STRUCTURE/HELPDOCS/DEFAULT.ASP?help_id=18) when you sell an item, or promotional fees when you place a listing. If you don't sell anything this money remains on your account until you use it or decide to close your account.

You will find that trademe will often run a "become authenticated for free" offer. Jump on this when offered.:msn-wink:

no you won't you'll find they'll run a 'get address verified for free' offer now and then, or it's free when you get 10 feedback anyway
