Alright this morn after the big piss down I cruised down Hillcrest Ave on the shore, a car was waiting to turn left and there were cars coming down from the hill on the right .... the bus lane was there, and I casually took my left turn as usual....then, this cager FREAKED OUT! He was prolly thinking I am going to use the main lane and he slammed on the breaks vigrosly, skid marks on the road and all....for nothing...as I was on the bus lane already....
Then he tooted at me......! I gazed back at him and waited for him to pull up to the traffic light....I smiled at him (he can't see through my tinted visor) and waved my finger...(not the middle one) .....
For real though....If I am in a cage and didn't know about the Buslane prevelige for bikes then I'd prolly trip out in similar circumstances...eh!:wari:

Must be careful about the bus lane now. I think the law has changed with regard to bikers being able to use it. Make sure it is signposted. I think councils are ok with it not Transit?
P.S. Wot's the red rep for? Ya haven't been here long enough for that have ya?

I have been talking to a politician who was on the land transport sub-committee last year. The intention of the law change is to allow motorcycles on all bus lanes. The exception whereby motorcycles must be specifically excluded is for those few cases where buses are allowed into city centers and mall areas that are otherwise off limits for all motor vehicles.

If a road lane is sign posted as a bus lane then Motorcyclists are permitted on it whether on a motorway or not. The only time when motorcycles are prohibitted is when there is a sign SPECIFICALLY prohibiting bikes. ie the sign must state "BUS LANE ONLY, Motorcycles prohibitted."

Transit's excuse that the motorway bus lanes are not bus lanes, but actually emergency stopping lanes is void as soon as they put up any sign designating it as a bus lane.

well firstly their squares not spades. red squares means red reputation meaning someone doesn't like you. greens the opposite obviously

I've started taking to using the emergency lane as soon as I get to the motorway on ramps as the traffic is just NOT moving, people seem to have a problem with merging. People sure seem to get pissed sometimes. I read in a bike mag that filtering, when traffic is no longer moving, is allowed.. anyone know for sure ?.

According to the above.

``bus lane'' means a lane reserved by a marking or sign installed at the start of the lane and at each point at which the lane resumes after an intersection for the use of—

(a)buses; and

[(b)cycles, mopeds, and motorcycles (unless one or more are specifically excluded by the sign)]

Why don't the cops know this?

Oh yea Suckingair have a look at my post on Lane split it has all the answers in there, your are right though, when the traffic is stationery you can split under 20k/h and don't do anything dumb...yeah

Don't know if has changed but when I was driving busses the bus lanes on the motor way where only posted during certain hours, the rest of the time the are just treated as hard shoulder. So be carful!

he3y devodave--U iggarant sod you --That was me waving to ya from the car yard in belmont.

A point I raised about the motorway bus lanes is they are a horrible place for bikes to be -all the crap off the road ends up in em so theres nails and glass and chunks of wire--all good stuff for ya expensive tyres.

my mates dad carries a copy of that rule in his jacket all the time. He just uses the buslane as he travels herald island - greenlane on his BMW F650GS... it is an offroad bike ;)

He's waiting to get pulled over so he can show the plod the rule and see if he gets the ticket. He's got the money to pay the ticket if need be so he doesnt have a problem with it.

As I understand it, the Bus lane rules are this

On the motorway no go for anyone but buses.

In city they are fair game EXCEPT when there is signage of some sort that says "buses only".

Why use the bus lane on the motorway? Like Frosty pointed out its got a lot of nastys waiting for your bike tyres, and buses.
Just lane split like others do, nice and safe(ish) and there aren’t always bus lanes anyway, not to mention that at the end of a bus lane no car driver is going to let you back in!

The bus lane issue seems to have been flogged to death quite alot. The way I look at it is that until I have a consistant answer, buss lanes are just accidents waiting to happen

Busses are accidents looking for a bike to happen to!
