Summary and thoughts
At no stage did I get off one of these bikes and say "that is the bike I want!". I know Dman got off the K6 and was a bit lost for words. Perhaps he really likes 150HP bar stools? :). Is it going to be like that? Am I going to get off a bike and know that its true love?
I loved the comfort of the 'bird. I think I could ride it all day...and still look cool. Cooler than on a nekid bike. I dont think it would be that great in town traffic. I dont think id like to lane split on it. I also think that riding up the Takas (where I ride at my 'limit') would not be that great. The 'bird is not near as nimble as the 'bag. But...for hooning about the Wairarapa it would be mint. Mint as. Presumably (havent checked bikepoint.co.nz yet) bang for buck they arent too expensive either. It seems to like my steering input a bit more than the SV did as well. I would also have to do something about the pipes. I dont actually know what a well sorted 'bird sounds like.
While I was sitting IN the 'bag, SV and 'bird, I was definitley on top of the K6. I cant say I really liked the sensation initially...but I got used to it. Whats the bike like in the rain compared to the 'bird? I still felt that I could ride it for a long time, but Dafe wanted it back. Stingy bugger if you ask me. Anyway...I think it would be ok long distance. Not as good as the 'bird....but ok.
Of all of them I enjoyed the aural sensation on the SV the most. I liked that rumbling sensation through the bike that the others didnt have. The 'bird was quite smooth. The GSXR quite buzzy through the pegs and bars. I dont know what rev range, but safe to say that it wasnt over 8k. Dafe didnt know what I meant until he rode it again and found it straight away. Sorry dude. I did wish that the SV would rev more though. Despite both the 'bag and SV having VTwins, the rev ranges are completely different. Whenever I have been watching bikes at the track I have liked the sound of inline4's zapping past. THEY sound like they are on their way to somewhere! I imagine myself doing this past the pussies driving their mothers tricked up WRX's on their way to the riverbank carpark on Thurs night. When I hear the VTwins going past I think they sound like they have just woken up but have a hang-over and arent really capable of much today sorry. While I know this isnt true, its still the feeling I get. The SV does sound fantastic when Im sitting on it though, but I do like a more revvy motor I think. Maybe something in between like a Hornet (11k rev limit like my 'bag)?
The 'bag? Ive seen pictures of my bike going straight ahead on the track up at Taupo (I turned corners dammit!!!) and it looked terrible. It looked like a WWII fighter. Im sure the frame looked like it could be made of wood. Each time I rode a different bike today, I was behind everyone else...momentarily. Each time I looked ahead, I saw what I thought was a farmer riding a farm bike. Holy cabbage trees!!! it wasnt a farmer, it was Dafe, or DM, or VT. Do I look like a farmer when Im riding? :) Looks aside my bike is great up to 100km. Chuck in traffic and youre wishing for a bigger bike. Ride around Welly city on a Saturday night and the bike is great...VTwin sounds reverberating against the buildings. Lined up against Mrs Smith's boy in his Mums WRX and youre wishing for a bigger bike again. Silly eh.
So...I think the next bike I need to ride is a supersport 600...not sure. Ill let you know. Volunteers? :blip:
Special thanks to Dafe, Darkman and Uncle B for the ride and rides. Im sure they were as nervous as I was :). Sorry about the rambling folks...might have sounded coherent at the start but that was 3hours ago.

apprently 900 Hornets does just over 10 seconds at the 1/4 mile.... think that is enought for "Mrs Smith's boy in his Mums WRX"
or a SV with pipes can out thump Mums WRX... :)
or a Gixxer thou or XX that can out run Mrs Smith herself... and scream like a banshee while at it.
think I am just as confused as u are... or how about we buy them all? :thud:
ps... I have a Gixxer 750 for sale... size of a 600 but with more ommpf!

When we get our bikes sorted we should do a tour Z. The 'bird would be excellent for that I reckon.

Yeah, you could say that, but I'm picking you guys obviously haven't tried the Hyobag 250! It's a whole different league!
BTW! Fatjim....... Skelstar really really wants to try a Honda VTR Fireyawn! You're his only hope OB1-FJ-OB!

With you on this one skelstar. I'm a naked bike convert and I've ridden a K6. I thought your write up was pretty good. As far as sportsbikes go the K6 is awesome but if you are getting off a naked bike it feels pretty alien. I'd be tempted to buy one but not convinced.
I do think that you know when you find the bike that you want. It's a bit of everything that does it for you. The looks, the sound and the ride. Keep looking until you find that ride that fits.

I think Skelstar will feel at home on a V-Twin 1000. Whether the SV or the Fireyawn. They are similar enough bikes. I think personal visual appeal will be the ultimate decider! Just don't go on peer pressure. You need to buy what you want and just bare in mind, choose a bike you will not outgrow too quick.
Obviously I have been trying to create my own personal Wellington Suzuki Riders Club. So the SV would suit you fine!!!
Having convinced one mate to buy the GSXR600 and convincing uncle of the GSXR1000 and now, Darkman %98 sure of the Gixxer 100 also!
Good honest write up on the review. Shame you didn't let rip on the bikes, however that would defeat the purpose of this review as it is really a virgin 250cc rider takes an unthinkable leap - read all about it! A ballsy experience for anybody in Skelstars position.
I remember being shitscared of the size of a 400cc the first time I got off of the 250.

I'll go with dafe on this. I chose a vtwin because they're so easy to ride. I hadn't riden for 15 years but needed a big bike (you know why), but for different reasons as you. I tried some 4's but the older ones felt too big/wide and the newer ones where too life threatening.
Why are the vtwins easy to ride? Well the power comes on steadily, no matter where you are in the rev range. They might not feel quick or eager like a 4 but Skelstar, with your weight, you'll keep up with maddog off the line no worries, and you'll pull better out of the corners too.
So we need to tee up a testride? I'm pissed I didn't go yesterday now. Skel, give us a PM and we'll go from there.

FJ, you dont have to offer...I know what sorta commitment is involved for a big bike owner. Besides its more the straight line feel, with the 75km corners that I really am interested in at the mo. Thats safe as and gives me a bit of a feel for what the bike would be like in the twisties. When I am legal (*cringes*) Ill take a shops one up the Takas and see what its like.
Lets discuss the next time we go for a ride. Sunday?

I have to apologise to Dafe. Im sorry I had to call your bike a 'barstool'. I know the K6 is something special, but the reason its special is lost on me. As far as I am concerned its no more special than the 'bird (not a trivial bike obviously).
The reason why the K6 is special is because its quicker than the 'bird but weights 60kg less. Do doubt the bike tips in and corners exceptionally as well, but a 250cc riding newb aint going to know that. The only thing I can go on really is the ergos and the sensation. 1/4 throttle on either the K6 or 'bird isnt going to tell me much at all about the difference in the mills eh?
You should be listening to big bike riders like Uncle B and Darkman. They love it. They should know.

Pretty much the same question for me Skels. I've been tossing up between the same bikes as you. I'm thinking the TL, I like the riding position better. I'm keen to have a go on a SV thou, &/or SV600 to see the comparrison, but at 120kgs I think the slighty heavier thou might handle me a bit better. I'm aiming towards a TL coz it's likely going to be closer to my price range. I'm not so sure about love at first sight/ride. I think it comes down to "I don't like less about this bike than the others"
I dunno that's just my 2c

Hey Skels,
I don't mean to have a go at you....but.....the 'testing' that I witnessed just the other day could not have given you a true taste of what these bikes are built for.
The Gixxer.....do I need to say what that bike's all about?....how would you know, you barely got the thing moving to find it's true essence.
Blackbird.....I think you got the gist of that machine, a mile munching super cruiser....evil on the straights but a handful in the twisties. You could sit on that bike all day long and hop off feeling good.
SV....That thing is so easy to ride. I'm glad you like the noise and vibes but you haven't experienced the SV at full song, try it, it will make you feel like you've woken up.
Hyobuttbag.....not much to say there....time to move on.
skelstar
7th January 2006, 20:09
No problems there. I guess I was assessing the ergos more than anyting else. And a little of the sensation....noise etc. I got enough of an idea from each bike (maybe not the SV...fair enough) to think about what I might like, or what I have been missing. Made me think more about the sprotsbike option though...Daytona 650's are/will be cheap. :)

Agreed. Respect to you Skelstar!! I'd be too shitscared to do the same. I'm sort of in the same situation, started learning on the VTR250, now wanting to learn more on something bigger. Too shitscared to test ride anything, so bought an SV650S (Black K5) on reputation as a great learners bike, and "lots of fun for beginners or experienced riders". Bought the VTR 250 the same way and have been thrilled with it. Had to put some new tyres on it after 7500km, Sport Demons, and they have transformed the bike, so much more fun, and safer too, I think.
I figure going to a 650 isn't too big a power hike, and from what I've read here putting some good tyres on and tweaking the suspension at some later stage would make it even better! ( Actually might do the tyres immediately)
Curious to know how you missed out on the CBTA, Skelstar. I started in September and just passed my CBTAF today! Have done over 8000km, none commuting, and thought that was a lot till I saw what you've done!! :2thumbsup

I got my learners in July, didnt see much point in doing the CBTA course to my restricted ($375) then my full ($375). Im a tight so I thought I would wait until Jan 18, and just pay once...R->F. Thhat kinda backfired, but I guess I only have to wait three...long...months until I can get it normally.

Yeah I read that... I'm glad I tried the new tyres on the VTR even though I'll only use them two weeks. (including an upcoming trackday), and maybe 2000km. Good to feel the difference the tyres make.
Think I'll learn to ride the SV650 reasonably well first, then do the susp and hopefully appreciate the difference more.

I find the Factory Dunlop D220's on the SV650 scary.... didn't feel confident at all. Much better after I put some M1's (Fr) and Z6 (Rear).
And yess... the SV1000 is a easy bike to ride... for me after ridding the 750 for a while... One thing I find with twins is that you need much less effort on braking for twisties... so more attention can be given to taking a good line and looking ahead.

Skels, always interesting to read your thoughts on the bikes. But I'm strongly with VT here, you haven't even come remotely near finding out what these bikes are like to ride. After having my bike for 9 months or so, I'm still no where near the limits of the bike. And I'm much more of a risk-taker than you.
Delete any sportsbike over 600cc from the equation straight away. You'll own the bike for 2 years before you'll have any need whatsoever for the performance it offers over a lesser bike. By that stage, knowing you, it'll have 50,000k on it and be time to trade it in!
Decide if you want to be a hero, then buy whichever of the 600cc sportsbikes fit the bill. But if you don't want to be a hero, don't bother with them. They're uncomfortable, difficult to ride in traffic and friggin expensive if you drop them (for any reason) - lotsa pretty plastic ;) Buy a naked bike.
skelstar
8th January 2006, 14:34
I dont know. Yeah a GSXR1000 would be pretty silly. Pretty stupid for me. Im kinda keen on at least riding a GSXR600/ZX-6R etc. Its not like I want to be a hero, but I think my riding style suits the sportsbike style. I like to at least look like I should be fast :). I think I tend to give 'te hill a bit of a nudge...Im hung up on the image thing which is a pity. Not many of the people I ride with have a naked bike eh?
In fairness to VT, I didnt rev his bike into its power range so didnt findout what it really feels like either.

The more I think about it, the more I think a SV650 would be good for Skels! A nice tidy second hand one could become a transition bike for six months or so, wouldn't loose much in depreciation. Gives skels some thrills for a while and brings him upto big bike riding and develops the appreciation for the variety of bigger bikes! Then he'll know there is only one choice!

OK. $12000 for a SV650S...bit more than Id like...soooo, what about a Hyosung 650R with Ohlins :). It goes marginally quicker than the SV650S, maybe doesnt handle quite as well, but ohlins would take care of that. Not sure about the look of the thing having see another guy on one the other day.
Did you look here???

Well the SV650 is a thou cheaper than the S new. I'd guess you should be looking for a discount on top of that.
Boyd in Hamilton have an 03 for 7,800.
I think resale of the Suzy will be better than the Hydrobag.

There were 2 SV650SK5s in Takapuna for $10995, clearance price, and possibly a new K4 for less I think (it might have been a SV650).
The look is is important to you....

I think the look of the Hyobag needs to be revisited. I just remember what I thought the first time I saw it...yummy.
Im not convinced of the SV650S. I like the K5 (black frame) in black maybe...dont worry Bruce, I love your bike! :)

I reckon I hav revised my thoughts on this skel [and yes this is a serious post]
I keep blieving a gsxr600 would be the go for you but damit...everyone especially dafe are makin alot of sence...sv650...but then your also right about the hyobag senior [650r] cheaper and I would imagine your weirod friend fergus 'would give u a good trade to upgrade!!' [oh I'm a poet and I know it...lol]
and forget the ohlins for the mean time...coz the day you can out ride your bikes suspension will be the day you'll probally be test driving a gixxer [and buying of course]
footnote: I think skel is a very mature rider for what I have seen....and very capable aswell..and this little bitch isn't about you..but you might know a few of these people..as others have mentioned about new-ish riders riding out of there abilities, skill and minds...I hav seen and ridin behind such people...with horrible horrible thoughts running through my head [ie: running wide into the opposite side of the road...overtaking on blind bends, body well over the centre line while cornering] about their longivity in this world...and its a aweful thought to be having about a fellow rider...how do you tell these people to slow down and or explain their actions and the consequences without havin a bitch fight with words...and if any of these people read this [no I'm not pointing fingers at all...its just that these sorts of people might realise who they are by reading this] the truth is ' your not fast if you can't ride on your side of the road' end of story....
sorry for havin my lil bitch on your thread skel...

No worries. Thanks for your post.
Newbies?: suggest to the rider(s) that yall go for a ride and tell them your thoughts on the ride itself. Be SUPER tactful ie 'I hope you dont if I...'. Experience has shown me that its very hard to give unsolicited advice over these forums. People that havent met you poos, have formed opinions based on what you post (good or bad). Youre a good bloke and I value your advice, but it would be hard to impart your advice on someone who hasnt met you, and be taken seriously. Make sense?
Champion rides like the Newbie one coming up (I think you have) and use THAT as your forum. :niceone:

Context. I love context.
Oh yeah...in Black.
Dafe: SV650S rear tires are 160's, Hyobag 650R tires are 160's :niceone:

The more I think about it, the more I think a SV650 would be good for Skels! A nice tidy second hand one could become a transition bike for six months or so, wouldn't loose much in depreciation. Gives skels some thrills for a while and brings him upto big bike riding and develops the appreciation for the variety of bigger bikes! Then he'll know there is only one choice!
I think Dafe is onto a great idea... Skels... buy a 2nd hand SV650 / S, whatever you fancy... then at the end of that you can make a better decision.:msn-wink:

Reckon this looks pretty trick.
Can get a Cfibre screen from Eurodave for $125...bellypan from sportsbikesnz.co.nz for about $300. Powdercoat a couple of components black. Black renhtal bars...Flame stickers on tail section :).
Bob's ya uncle. :niceone:

I managed to fit a nice smallish see thru GIVI screen $120ish... with custom mount $70ish... that you can actually hid your head behind... will post it up when I find a photo.

I think ive seen photos of such a device. While I may not need a screen I do like the Buell style one (Carbonfibre looks awesome), and makes the bike look a little more....brutal (not brutale)/muscle bike like. Not a clear plastic screen kinda guy :).

I like the clear honda flyscreen. Because its so minimal it doesnt ruin the naked looks of the bike.

Essentially I like the concept. A bit OTT, but a muscle bike none the less.
MT03 looks interesting...different class obv.

I was reading the "Aprilia Pegaso Strada" article in Kiwi Rider last night - interesting looking bike, properly not your taste though?
I like a couple of things about it though; the low seat height, integrated storage compartment and it's not too bad looking either. Not sure about the price $14,000 - $15,000.

Yeah, a bit 'adventure bike' like for me. Reminded me of the Triumph Tiger ;).
Nice looking bike though.
