The time has arrived!! Qkchk and Custard have decided to announce the Northern Exposure Tour '06 :2thumbsup

A 3 day tour during the Auckland anniversary Weekend - 28th, 29th and 30th Jan
Up the West Coast to the Lighthouse @ Cape Reinga and back down the East Coast

The Tour includeds:

Saturday 28th Jan
- Meet @ Westgate Shell, head up SH16 via Peak Road to Wellsford
- Join SH1 to Brynderwyn take Maungaturoto turn off along SH12 (Same route taken as in the famous Opononi ride) :chase:
- Pass through Dargaville, WAIPOUA FOREST (can stop to see giant Kauri tree if need be), and Opononi.
- Take the Vehicle Ferry from Rawene across to Kohukohu
- Rejoin SH1 and "BLAST" throught the Maungamuka Gorge (QKCHK's Old Blatting area) to Kaitaia
- Time permitting and sore bums, could go out to Ahipara for a looksee etc..
- Finish up for the first day @ Waipapakauri Ramp, Ninety Mile Beach Park. http://www.ninetymilebeach.co.nz/ We are staying here for two days in cabins.......

Sunday 29th Jan
- Head up North along SH1 past Houhora, Te Kao, Waitiki Landing up to the North Cape Lighthouse
- Last 20kms IS IN GRAVEL! If you do not wish to ride in gravel you can stay @ Waitiki Landing for a cuppa...
- For those who have not been up to the cape, take the oppotunity to ride to the end of New Zealand, you cant go any further than the lighthouse! You can see where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day you can also see the Three Kings Islands.
- On return we drop in @ Houhora (for a icecream?) and head back down to Awanui to drop into the Ancient Kauri Kingdom (awesome walkthrough staircase inside a Kauri tree) www.ancientkauri.co.nz
- Time permitting we could do a couple of more rides ... options open...maybe the Fish Shop for late lunch...
- Ride back to Ninety Mile Beach Park for a drink or 5 and then settle in for a Lamb on the Spit Smorgasboard (YUMMY, just ask Custard what he thinks of it!)

Monday 30th
- Depart Waipapakauri Ramp head south on SH1 turn off @ Awanui onto SH10
- Travel the Beautiful and picturesque East Coast down through Taipa, Coopers Beach, Cable Bay
- Stop in @ Mangonui Fish Shop for the best seafood and Fish 'n Chips in the area (We could do this on Sat or Sun instead if time permits....)
- Continue to head south via East Coast's beautifuls roads through Kaeo, Kerikeri, take a slight detour through Haruru Falls to Paihia, then past Opua to Kawakawa.
- Rejoin SH1 to Whangarei then take the Waipu turnoff...... Waipu Cove, Mangawai back to Wellsford.
- Can go either way (SH1 or SH16) but would recommend SH16 due to Long weekend traffic.....
- Fin.

Anyone who wishes to join myself and Custard on this "TOUR" can PM me (I don't bite) as I would like to know who is coming along so we don't leave you behind!! This will be a MEDIUM PACED RIDE (open road crusing @ 120 if the coast is clear.... not warp speed, it IS a tour...) I have included a ruff map so you can see where we are going.

You are responsible for your own bookings, we are all grown adults here (well some of us are...) if you book, can you please also make a booking for the Lamb on the Spit Smorgasboard (you wont regret it)

We have booked our accomodation for the 28th and 29th Jan with http://www.ninetymilebeach.co.nz/ or ring them on 0800-367-719. They do have quite a few cabins left. Most of the cabins can accomodate up to 4 people. Just ask them... First in first served.........

In general the long weekend up north is fine weather, so lets hope nothing changes... Both of us are going regardless of the weather.....

Sounds real interesting, going up to Cape Reinga is something I've wanted to do for a while. Only been there once before (in a car).

I'll have to do some thinking... I'm hoping to save enough for a new bike before uni starts again and I have to stop working. Just have to figure out if I can afford to go on this trip as well and if the Zeal will last the trip without a new chain and sprockets.

Just got back from there... with the boat in tow... BUT we had a couple of fellow KBers drop in on us while we were staying in Russell and they said the "Old Russell Road" is now superb. We may consider doin a overnighter there later on in the year. This tour could be a test for us if you know what i mean.........

Sounds like fun.

By the way - I have a question:confused:

This place we are visiting.... does it have a Warehouse Store in it?

Cos that way I can buy clothes and toiletries there and not bother carrying any luggage.....

Zapf - please put me down for one of the beds in those cabins - I hope you're talking about the $55 one.

Why don't you do a search on Warehouse on white pages and match it up against a map...

Ok... I'll count you in for one of the $55 cabins. I'll call them tomorrow and see what is available.

Come on maaaaannnn, a real biker LIVES in his/her leathers/corduras........... Hehehe  There is a Warehouse store @ Kaitaia which we will be passing through towards the end of Saturdays ride. It is approx 15mins ride south of where we are staying... It may seem silly BUT have you ever thought about a backpack? The cabin that me and Custard are staying in is just that - a cabin. No linen, so we have to take our sleeping bags with us (and our ventura backpacks) I would assume that the cabins will be lockable so we don't have to carry our shit right up to the lighthouse and around till Monday (home-time).... Hope this has helped out your dilemma JSG....

So I need to buy a couple of bedsheets too huh........:spudgrr:

The backpack doesn't go well with the hump and tying it to the back of the bike is a nuisance with the piddly little hooks my bike has...... also I think the added safety and convenience of having no luggage is worth it:yes:

Eh - last time I was up there the road to the lighthouse was one long gravel mess....... has it been sealed?? Or do we have to take our shiny sprot boiks over it..

Get a tail pack / soft panniers.... or if u keep the bike for a while then a pack rack.

Sorry JSG, last 20km to lighthouse is still, and probably be for sometime yet, Gravel. The Maori up there want to keep that way. It is to stop any soft-cocks:baby: from riding up there. Harden-up dudes if you're coming North:p We don't have Metrosexuals up here (only Ruralsexuals:stoogie: , eg. sheep shagging is fine as long as you don't wear make-up)

I know what you're saying and you do have an excellent point.

But me being me, I'd rather ride from Warehouse to Warehouse buying stuff and have the convenience of no luggage than carry that stuff around.

I understand all these panniers and packs are very secure and don't affect the bike much, but I still prefer riding with as little as possible on the bike.

Right now I carry a map, pen, paper, tool kit, first-aid kit, tyre-repair kit and a rain-suit, will probably buy a small can of chain lube to add to that. All of which fit into the tail storage space...... I don't want to carry anything else if I can help it.

Hey - gotta leave now - you coming to Bruces thing ??

Gravels a bit deep at places and the stones are in a few places a bit big - 1 inch diameter..... ( from what I can remember)........ took it real slow in the cage....... and very very very (did I say very??) dusty on a hot dry day.

its not deep gravel is it? just un-sealed right?Deep? define "Deep". You've ridden worse. It's just the same as any stand gravel road up here (and better than some). Has been graded since I went up last. The worst thing is the tourist buses up your arse, making you think you're riding the gravel like a nana (until you gain on a "Cage" and find out that the fu*ken buses are hooning on the gravel). I'd offer to pillion any rider too soft to ride it, but feel that any rider that soft should stay in Dorkland:whistle: :wait:

How about a tankbag? Pretty cheap and they don't get in the way.........

As for the "GRAVEL" report - Last time I rode up there the gravel was a fine grade and was fine for riding on. I will make enquires with the clan up north for the recent conditions........

Anyway, you don't have to ride on the gravel if you do not wish to (as stated in the first post!!!) - I will have a spare seat if need be or you can chill out at the Waitiki Landing Shop till we get back.

Well last time we tried to do the 'cut back through Paparoa' we lost half the crew. Yoshi and InDeSkyz ended up trialbike riding through clay and gravel. I'll leave the 'Busa home if I'm gonna do that...............

Up the Westcoast on SH12 would be a nice TOUR. Remember Danielsun, not all the grasshoppers go fast like you ;)

Medium-paced ride tikitour. Any loonie/hoon can meet us at a pre-arraged spot if the need for speed does arise.

However if you look in the intenerary, (if that how you spell it) we may have time later on that day after we return from Cape Reinga (the light house @ the top) I guess all we can do is decide as a group what we want to do with the spare time. I have a few old runs out to Tokerau Beach, Mangonui and Ahipara if time allows but if you guys want to go to the Tattoo show @ Kerikeri, we can look at it. Kerikeri is approx 1.5hrs from where we are staying. Play it by ear... :grouphug:

I could not agree with you more Qkchk. We organised the East and Central north Island tour as posted in the events on the same weekend. Come on guys and gals...this is not a chat room, its a biker website, with the emphasis on "biker"..which means ppl who RIDE bikes....not just talk about them to be in the "in" crowd.

Thanks you for your support guys, it would of been nice to join you on your tour. Let me know if you are planning anymore in the near future....

I've been watching your thread and as you have said, IT IS HARD to get people motivated and actualy riding on this site...... I've figured it comes down to a matter of things:

- Lack of funds and/or time for riding (not at top of their priorities)
- Handbrake (his or her partner/wife/husband)
- Children or pets
- Not as competant rider as they make out
- Don't even have a bike
- Don't like the thought of doin 200+ kms per day
- Would rather sit behind a computer making motorbike sounds instead.

I'm not picking on any single individual, just giving MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION! As expected I will be giving flak for it.............:dodge:

I don't think anyone has had any trouble getting the A's out on day rides, but overnighters are another level of commitment again.

Don't give up, it's a good idea, just one that doesn't suit at this time.

The road is gravel road, it gets graded now and again, but we dont know the timetable of the grader, it was graded two weeks ago. the metal trucks came up before christmas to lay the metal, It depends on the date of your tour. Sorry I could not be more helpful. There is talk of them tarsealing the road sometime this year.

This morning Duc-Gurl and I rode over to meet Qkchk 'n Crew in Dargiville from Whangarei.
Through drizzle, rain, fog and road snakes we blasted over...a few moments were had on the way too:eek: but ya get that.
From rain to damn near sunshine!! Dargi was mint!
After the mandatory harassment:buggerd: we all headed off north bound towards Opononi.
Had a bloody good ride up and through the Waipoua forest. Custard and I took the lead and carved it nicely.
Reconnected with all at Tane Mahuta in the forest for pic's and a quick relax.
On to Opononi for a beer/bourbon and oh...yes MV Senna...a fark'n LATTE!! Yep...bloody Jafa's eh!!! :oi-grr: And yes, photographic evidence is attached too:niceone: I didn't even know that the Opo pub served them and I lived there for a bloody decade:eek:
Well we then went our own ways. They carried on to Rawene to catch their ferry and we cruised back here to Whangarei.
Looking forward to riding up to Paihia on Monday to meet up and show them the fun way down the coast :niceone:

Me and a couple of mates,Tiller and Shane, rode up to Paihia this morning to meet up with Qkchk 'n Crew. Drizzled the whole way up and had to contend with a bit of diesel on the roads so took it easy. All good when ya can see it eh:blink:
Decided to ride back inland to Kaikohe and through the Twin Bridges route but lost a couple of R6's enroute:doh: Miscomunication sucks, and no not in a good way.:nono:
All of a sudden we had a Gixxer ride going on including three custards,a 'busa and an old school '86 I believe.
Blasted down Mangakahia Rd to find out it was closed at the other end. Turned out to be a blessing as we found yet another back road blasting zone :blip: Damn I love Northland's rds!
Had a beer at Paparoa after meeting up with another Gixxer rider,NZ Kelt, and showing the Jafa's another mighty fine bit of Northland roading:2thumbsup
Was great to catch up and meet some KBers and I'm certain they'll be back:chase:

A few pic's attached from todays riding....

I was on my R6 with my mate on the back.

Good to here you had a good time Dudes and Dudettes.

Feel bad not knowing about the Detour on my home Rd (Mangakahia). Had a look at it after work yesterday. It just 3-4Km north of my home. It would have been mess over the WE. Lots of soft Clay. They have limed it yesterday. Hopeful the road will be opened again by Next WE.

By the way the road you were deverted down is on this map (see attachment).
