FROSTY

A biker who turned out to be a fellow KBer had a breakdown close to BP Silverdale.
It happened at 6.15 at night.I stopped at around 6.45 and he said he had it all under control.
at 7.45 i went past him again -towie still hadnt turned up.
It finally turned up at 9.15pm
In all that time NOT ONE biker bothersed to stop to see if he was ok.
and yea around 15-20 bikes went past
Pretty piss poor effort I reckon.

I hope it was not because of the type of his bike. Where have all the "Gentlemen/women" of the road gone. Are we so self-centred as Kiwis now? Get as bad as NY'ers.

Hey Frosty, sad to say, but just prior to xmas, I had the exact same thing happen....3 of us stuck on the side of the taupiri road, waiting 2 hrs for the towie to turn up, at least a dozen bikes went past, and no one stopped to see if we were ok or needed a hand.... being in the complete middle of nowhere in the pissing rain, it was obvious that we hadn't stopped for a f@#kn picnic. Really didn't instill my confidence that if I broke down and was by myself, someone passing would stop and help out... must do a motorbike mechanic course methinks....

Good post Frosty... it's gotta be a combination of do unto others, and the family of bikers.
Hell's bells even if you're only carrying a cell phone - stop to see if they might need to use it...?!?

Sounds familiar, I had about 10 bikes go past while I was sitting on the side of the road next to a broken bike in Tauranga yesterday. In an hour and a half, only 2 people stopped, both of them ladies.

Exactly MDU. I may not have the mechanical skills but have stopped to offer help in the past...and will continue to do so.
Karma ain't it? I know I would appreciate it...

I actually rode past a guy broke down on a norton last weekend. But 400m on i decided it wasn't the way and went back.
He'd already called out a mate with a Ute (thank christ for cellies aye).
We had a good chat - he'd been to Akld and back - his first issue luckily, a dead battery - no good with CDI. So there was nuthin that could be done other than wait.
I took off on y boring reliable japper - hope he got picked up b4 the storm arrived - it was REAL nasty!

'Tis the Biker Law and the Unwritten Gospel. You *ALWAYS* stop for a biker in trouble. No matter what. Those, unworthy of the name of biker, who break this most high Commandment, will be jealously and terribly dealt with by the Biker Gods.

I was heading back down Peak Rd at that kinda time..
I didnt go up to silverdale at all thou... I would have stopped to see if all was ok...
Recently I was sitting on the side of the road just out of Orewa on the hill waiting for a towie to tow my mates car...
Yeah I spotted them broken down, so I pulled up on the bike.. and used my AA card to get help and a towie for them.
I was the one who waited for the towie as they all had to be back in town for rehersals.. they got another car to come and collect them all.
Anyway while I was sitting on the side of the road... watching people go by, as you do... heaps of bikers going either way all slowed right down, to check, they didnt stop but I did give them the thumbs up signal... so that was cool.. No problems at all. Even a few of the gang boys slowed down...
So even if you slow down enough to just check... the rider will either say stop or give you the thumbs up signal which if you get that then all is sweet..

Must be a dorkland thing. Yesterday when one of the guys lost his chain and we were all sitting on the side of the road getting it sorted, a couple of bikes stopped and another 8 slowed down until I waved to signal we were fine. Not one carried on without slowing down.

This is one experience. I on the other hand had a different one. A rider went down on a ride reciently. Everyone stopped, did not matter what sort of bike it was, nor cage. There was plenty of bods to help, but only so much could be done till the chopper arrived. I can say that I was most impressed at the amount to assistance on offer. Hope the dude is OK now.

All depends - if there are several bikes stopped on the side of the road, is it fair to assume things are under control?
1 or 2 bikes stopped - I'll stop. But 3 or more????

But maybe you have the tool in your saddle bag that is needed , and none of them do ? I'll always slow down and put my visor up. If things are under control, I'd expect a thumbs-up, and carry on. Y'never know, may be three people staring at the bike wondering what the heck to do . And if you're on a big bike, maybe they can use a tow.

About a month ago my brother and I went out for a ride to Coromandel township, he had a bee fly into his helmet and sting him on the face while in mid corner causing him to swing wide and down into a ditch just before Te Kuma. No one stopped at all even seeing his 750 busted and lying on its side, no cars or bikes stopped and at least 30 went passed.

Let's hope it was just one of dem tings Frosty.... I have stopped on the side of the road many times when cellphone has been going nuts in my pocket or to take a photo or whatever, and often other bikers will slow down - I always try and give a thumbs up with lots of warning so they can keep going if they choose to.
Thinking about it, I REALLY hope it was just a bad day, cos the concern for others who may be in trouble is one of the things i value about the motorcycling community!

Shocking eh.

I might slow down and have a look as I go past - if it all looks under control I'll keep going. If you need help, make it look like you need help - if you just sit there watching the traffic go past, that's just what I'll do - go straight past.

Frosty, hope your buddy got sorted in the end.

I think its just an odd experience Frosty, but I'll always slow, check for response (thumbsup, whatever) then continue.
I reckon far worse is the damn photographers like trev who get the awesome shots of our bikes. I see his bike, slow down to check (usually get extremely puzzled by a helmet sitting somewhere - if its a crash, how is it sitting there?? ) then miss out on the nice shots :weep:
I must have been caught out by trev's bike more than 4-5 times in only 3 or so rides  One time I came up behind his bike very puzzled and worried, only to have him yell down from the slope... no piccy for me again

Same here Gremlin... someone give me notice before hand if he's taking pics up ahead... very off putting to suddenly see a bike on the side of the road for no reason.

i stop if i see a biker pulled over....piss pouring rain on the way back, going through kaitoke...see a bike pulled up at what i think is the hall. i stopped and turned back. turned out they had no wet weather gear and visorless lids, so were waiting out the bad stuff [heck, my leather jacket soaked through to my skin that day] a few of the others went past, but we gave them a wave as they went. the guys i stopped for were pleased id stopped, so i for one will continue to do so...even if all i can offer is support.
hitch...had ive been there, i woulda stopped. hope to maybe catch you at the races next year if im not working. heal fast!!

just saw this threed...
a little story about when i stopped for a stranded biker,..
there i was ... the day was HOT, i was just cruising,
mud boy's mum (:ar15: )had turned up less than 4 hrs earlier and i was on my own.:2thumbsup :2thumbsup
i got lost but who cared.. not me!
i saw a sign naming a place i knew.. yep i'll go that away, i thought.
about 10 minuets later i saw..what i thought was a harely, broken down down and a guy just looking out over a padock havin a smoke. so i stopped to see if he needed a hand with anything.. not being a mechnic i thought we could tow him .. or use my cell ph...
turned out that it was a suzuki...
but no the poor bugger had "cought up" to a muffty cop, who hadn't filled his quoter, and he was just pissed off and thought it was safer not to ride for a bit...
we rode together till i reach a little town and stoped for a coffee, he shouted me it just to say thanks for stopping!!!
i could go one and tell more about the guy ... but that will be another day

I gotta say, that it aint that surprising. Although i'm more likely to stop than not, i have done both. Nessesity sometimes means we cant stop.
Time is a bitch, and we live in a society that is governed by its watch.
Having said that, ten bikes riding past, cant all have been in that much of a hurry. To sum up, Piss poor is right, but there are well proper excuses for not stopping, and we cant all feel guilty for needing to be somewhere.

I have pulled over for bikers.
One recently around manukau somewhere, bike northbound I was going southbound, if I hadn't had an appointment to get to I would have doubled back and checked he was alright, even though he was talking on his cellphone when I went past.
Times a bitch aye.

Weasel, you're lucky they didn't know you're from Pommyland, otherwise they probably would've run you over!!!! :wari:
You did, however, have 3 great guys stop and say gidday. And 1 fantastic person escort you to the Coroglen.
