Doncha just hate it.....

Coming down off the off-ramp from the Gorge onto the motorway, the '10 starts spluttering so I switch to reserve. Right she’ll pick up any second. Still spluttering and then dies….
Oh sh1t !!!
Coast to a stop look in the tank and she’s bone dry !!
Dammit must have connected the tank hoses incorrectly when I last had the tank off.

So just wondering what to do and meanwhile in a very awkward part of the motorway so getting a little nervous. Rang Mrs Nudie but she can’t really help.
Just then an AA guy pulls up behind me. Saved !!!! A few litres fuel and many thanks (not a member but am going to be now) I’m on my way.

However it’s not over yet. I get to work and as I work for Roading and Traffic of the Welly City Council I was spotted on the big TV screens they have for monitoring the m’way for accidents etc.
Been the laughing stock for the last hour…

Fuel hoses the same size for the main and reserve hoses? I thought they normally made one slightly smaller than the other so you didnt get them confused...

I know it has a fuel pump in there under the tank and there's normally one main hose that goes from there to the tank. Hmmm,...I'll have a geez at it tonight.

Hope you don't get the hoses crossed on the NZ250 when you put the tank back on! Long way down here... that, and I'd rather avoid the same embarrassment myself!

Good that you didn't have to wait long though, the AA guy was good to look after you. :Police:

Well I guess you know that your reserve works!! I take it that you weren't riding the ZX10 then?

At least you gave your fellow workers something to laugh about.

geee,...umm,...thanks....Crashe...

Did some investigating and it turns out that there is only one hose from the tap to the fuel pump (and carbies). I remember that now anyway.

The main tank supply relies on a big plastic tube inside the tank. Once the fuel gets below this then (obviously) it's time for reserve. I'm thinking the tube might have cracked or snapped allowing fuel to be used right up.

Phew, glad you were back up and running quick, I thought I mighta flown past and missed ya on the side of the road - would feel really bad. I usually have my lane-splitting blinkers on and tend not to notice much beyond immediate threats. I guess you don't do what I do then, and run off the odometer and just fill up every 180-200ks depending on recent riding style. Only used the reserve twice, once at Manfeild (I was a little optimistic on my fuel burn) and once on the way to work with 190k on the odo after a "vigorous" weekend ride. I've had to push the old 400 from Ngauranga to BP Horokiwi... that was heavy enough. Good get out of jail free card today I say!

Actually there were a few bikes that went past me this morning, without wanting to restart that previous thread.
(But I didn't see any 636's :) )

I did stop in a precarious place where the Gorge onramp meets the Hutt Motorway. Of course the bike wouldn't run out of petrol in a much easier place to get off.........:brick:

Funny thing was yesterday I was thinking that the old girl is getting really good economy at present,...ha ha she was about to bite back at me !!

Woulda been about 8.55. I'm figuring you were clear by then. I should have noticed something there (if there was something there!), since I usually do a quick scan as I come over the rise just in case a "threat" is parked around that area.

Was between about 8.50 and 9.00am so, yes 8.55 would be right.

All ended well, and made a great story for here !!:ride:

Oh, okay, I'll go and hide in shame now then.

I think since I've started working in town again that my focus has got narrower and narrower - I used to see everything, but the traffic on the urban mway is a whole differenly level of nutters to the Hutt traffic. I'm starting to see only those cars immediately in range. Not good when you don't notice the uniformed fuzz parked up... almost too late that one was!!

No need to hide in shame.

The AA dude was excellent. He was passing to another job when I saw me and stopped to see if I was okay. He got some petrol out after I told him what had happened. When I told him I wasn't a member and didn't have any cash on me (I pay for everything with Eftpos) he still gave me about 3 litres of fuel and said don't worry about it. He stuck around and made sure the ZX-10 fired up. Then when I was all suited up and all was fine, he left.
He will definitely get a beer if/when I see him in a pub.

Cudos to AA and I am definitely going to join.

bad luck... good luck..

pleased it worked out for ya.

I have only run out of fuel once and that was when I brought my gpz250. I picked it up from the guy I brought it off and was going along alright and it coughed and spluttered and I had all sorts of thoughts running through my head. LEMON I thought. Bugger it. Then common sense kicked in and I thought fuel!! So I turned the switch and it still died. checked the tank and she was bone dry. I made it about 15km. YAY. I surpose I should have checked the fuel when I brought it.... YAY for cellphones...

I rode back down the motorway late this afternoon, past the place where I ran out this morning. This time I had nearly a full tank of gas but there was still a bit of trepidation as I went past there. Funny how the old mind works against you sometimes.
