Oh man, I went on a reasonable length ride all the way along New North - Great North road for a girly today.

I have an HJC helmet without a tinted visor and the sun was doing its usual beat down. Other than noticing it was ROASTING HOT, I didn't think much more of it.

Upon arrival and removal of of my helmet, I noticed it felt pretty raw. Had a look in my side mirrors and noticed my face was not unlike a beetroot. Not only that, my skin has blistered slightly in parts around my eyes.

Erm.

Since when did the sun get that hot? :/ I was on the road for maybe 15 minutes but damn, be careful out there. I'm kinda fair skinned but still, was not expecting that. I will now be applying sunscreen for the rides out west.

Oh, and the girl laughed at me too. Silly girl.

:angry2: <-- me on arrival, coloured perfectly.

Slip, slop, slap and wrap, people.

Mirrors and triple clamps are good things for giving you a tan. :pinch:

Nice avatar, but perhaps not very practical?? Guess thats why someone invented tinted visors. Honestly though, I have no idea how you can ride in bright sunlight with NZ glare with no sunglasses (assuming) or tinted visor. I couldn't and wouldn't feel safe either.

With the sun's dangerous rays in NZ, you can get burnt on an overcast day too.

Absolutely the MOST wonderful thing I did last year was get my new helmet WITH a tinted visor...dunno how I managed all those years with just using sunnies and my helmet. No more sunburned nose or cheeks...yeah damn ha :Punk:
Best $75 bucks i ever spent!

I can't do without them either...not only do they look mean but they keep the sun off your face.

Personally, I wouldn't recomend a mirrored visor for the simple fact that I've had a couple and the mirror stuff is impossible to look after. The first one I had was replaced by the distributor because all of the mirror finish had just rubbed off. The second one I had did the same thing. I only ever wash them with luke warm water and a soft paper towel but the finish still rubbed off.
Both were the blue coloured mirror visor for the HJC, my wife's silver one didn't seem to be as bad.

I've now got a dark smoke, it's not mirrored but just tinted dark (like sunnies).

Hmm, might have to look into that.

I hadn't been out for any longer than 20 minutes during the day on my bike this summer.. I'm more of a night rider.

Was quite a shock to feel the ferocity of that sun. Stupid ozone layer!

Tinted visors are just that - tinted - they don't offer any sun protection. I still find I get a sunburnt face if I don't use sunscreen when riding. I don't recall seeing any sun protection factor specs on any of my tinted visors - and the irridium ones seem to be worse.

My Arai tinted visor has a UV protective film of some sort on it. So the sticker said. Got is free along with a standard clear visor when I bought the helmet.

I dispute that, while I was away over the Xmas break, me (dark tint visor) & my wife (silver mirrored visor) didn't get burnt in the face at all while our companions (both clear visors) did.

So they must offer some protection.

Never had a sunburned face - lucky really. Don't wear sunscreen on my face because I sweat and it runs into my overly sensitive, highly irritated eyes.

The plain tints are around the $60 mark, the mirrored ones are around $90ish.
