After the race meeting on sunday I was lucky enough to be invited to drive round the NEW Taupo racetrack. Only One word to describe it.
WOOOOW
Trust me on this one folks you will not be bored by this new track because its darn fantastic. The map really doesn't do it justice. Its just an endless series of corners and the elevation change is just outstanding.
Its not about outright speed with the straights not being very long at all
What it is about is corners--Lots of loverly corners with sandtraps if ya stuff up.
As at TODAY --the pits isnt sealed and the chicane from the drag strip straight right down the pit straight and the pit straight corner arent sealed -the earth works are finished and They are keen to get it done.
A word of warning -dust is making the track slippery but as soon as the grass grows that problem will go away.

I think even juzzer would give it a go with you if he's had enough to drink. He'd definitely have to be blind, but whether that means he's too smashed to find your cabin is another thing. But don't give up hope. Chin up and all that (it opens your throat up)

Mate of mine is back from the UK at the moment. He's been over there for over 6 years now. Anyway, I told him about this track day and how much it cost and he nearly choked. This is way cheaper than anything he's been to in the UK. Cheapest was 80 pounds with the dearest 198 pounds. Folks there has been a question raised re the increased price.
This isn't a case of me suddenly deciding I want to make a huge profit.
JUST to hire the track has gone up from under $1500 to just over $4100
Its a brand new track and its no longer run by a club its run by a profit making company -None of the other fixed costs have really changed. Except Im paying for marshalls rather than having KB marshalls so EVERYBODY gets track time.
The hint I have is that Hampton Downs is goint to be similarly priced so I'd get used to it.
makes Manfeild look pretty darn good right now.

Mental Trousers
27th February 2006, 20:49
We've been spoilt for prices here (ok, not Puke). Unfortunately, we haven't been spoilt for quality as most tracks here are pretty average (Manfield being better than average). BUT, with Taupo being fully upgraded to International standard we'll finally have a top quality track. Fact of life - it costs.

$40 = goat tracks (except Manfield)
OR
$100 = world class

FROSTY
27th February 2006, 21:00
MT with all respect to manfeild--cos I surely do love the place--it needs about 100k spent on it to bring the track up to standard. You must have noticed the broken seal and patch ups on the surface.
The floods a year or so ago has taken its toll on the surface.

NinjaBoy
27th February 2006, 21:26
Judging by the price of other trackdays at the same track Frosty's price is still on the cheap side.

Is there a reason Frosty you haven't considered other NI tracks ?

MT with all respect to manfeild--cos I surely do love the place--it needs about 100k spent on it to bring the track up to standard.

it would take a lot more than 100k to bring it up to standard, Manfeild are looking at spending over a million $$$$$ to do it over the next 3-5 few years, Ruapuna is spending 1.3 million at the end of the year to resurface the whole track and it is not even close to being as rough as Manfeild

So what's the slow/novice class like? Would a newbie like me (had learner licence for 2 weeks so far) get blown out of the water, or would it be a useful way to improve skills etc etc?
Thanks,
Rosie.

FROSTY
28th February 2006, 07:28
Rosie --the way you are let out onto the track means that probably Yes you will be passed by faster bikes. BUT Theres a little hitler watching to make sure its always done safely.
People are really good when passing -there is a rule --The responsibility to pass safely is on the passing rider.

Dunno about that.....there's alot of jaffas going to taupo, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that couldn't afford the time or travelling costs....

DEATH_INC = I agree. Besides I really dug the TD at Taupo last year. Was awesome meeting some north-north islanders from KB and found most antagonists from KB were good people. You are less likely to meet as many if its held a two-thirds of the way down the country. Only comitted riders like Gareth, Buggy and MT etc.

Rosie, you'll be fine. Everything is arranged so it's as safe as possible and everyone has a good time. You won't regret going.

I suggest you pm Str8 Jacket and ask her what it was like being a newb on a small bike at a track day. She just recently went to Manfield and was in the same position as you are.

The hint I have is that Hampton Downs is goint to be similarly priced so I'd get used to it.
makes Manfeild look pretty darn good right now.

so frosty, or anyone else who knows, please confirm its $100 for the day?
bugger it, im coming!

Tony i woudln't get too fussed about it mate, it's bound to happen when you organise something 5 months out from the actual day, people just can't commit who knows what might happen, i'd say without a doubt you will fill up easily, i dont see why not. Phew, I just read the other thread & found out 'new track' meant the new short track, pedalling the 640 down that looong back straight would have got tiring, especially while being passed by the thou's at warp factor 9. The new track looks cool, though I'd love to have a blat on the old track sometime on the 640 & see how my lap times compare with the ol' VFR400.

I know a couple of non KB'er who might be up for it if there are spaces left over so just say the word if more starters are required.

Cheers

The old track will be different as well. They've had to widen it by about 2m to meet international standards so times now will be quite different.

You know that KB isn't an exclusive club or anything eh?? All your friends have to do is create an account in the forums and they're able to register and attend just like anyone else.

Back to the track.... superb surface, some rubber laid by the V8's but as my mate Aaron said... cause there's no bumps in the surface you don't get any warnings that you're loosing traction. scraped pegs and sliders on the 636 due the confidence in the track ...bring on May

Are you saying I can race a truck or horse float on the track at the same time as the bikes are out! That's kinky. I was intending to take the bike onto the track. But your ideals got merit. I can wipe all the bikes out on the first few corners with the horse float jack-knifing everywhere and claim the checkered flag. Putting 3 or 4 bikes in the float as I raced. Is that a tip for settling down the suspension on the float or is that for better tyre grip?
What's the current Taupo lap time record for a horse float?

We have no more spots available this time, but if all goes well we will be doing this every 2-3 weeks.
You guys and mr Trousers will be the fist to know if i can get you in.

Might orginise another day myself so i could get a few others out there too....

Its $650ish to rent the new part of the track for 3 hours (2-5pm) with a max of 10 on the track at one time (to avoid the ambo requirement). $1000 for the full track for the same amount of time.
would be $33 ($50 full track) each with 20 riders
