I have just had a fine thru the door here in Scotland from a recent trip to NZ for speeding, bloody 111kmh in a 100 what a load of sh1t, are they this strict?
Anyway, does anyone know if this will carry to points on my licence when I get there and what is score before bans etc.
I have been fined $80 is this standard.

Yes they fill there quota with anyone they can nab. I have had 3 speeding tickets all at the 80$ mark. 114 in a 100 zone, 62 in a 50 zone and 112 in a 100 zone. Its just an extra road tax.
Did though have the pleasure of being "flashed" head on the other day. just wished i'd had the pressent of mind to smile and wave as i was on my bike and theres no chance they'll find me. :blah:
Sucks.
As to demerit points... no idear really.

Ok, I was under the impression it was different cause someone else I know ended up with the 20 demerits waiting for them and being transferred to their license when they got here.
I work in a rental car company and we get at least 6 or 7 germans a year asking us how to get their license back cause they thought the the 100 sign meant minimum speed. Aparrently they can still drive back home but for the time being in NZ they have to stay off the road. Always fun we we have to get OUR cars out of the impound lot.

Actually that makes sense if you are on a non resident license....if someone was to then get a NZ license later on,i can't see them dragging up old demerits to put on it.?

The catch with the $80 being, take to long to pay it and it is added to at an alarming rate.

Do rental outfits explain speed limits, double-yellow lines, etc to 'foriegners' renting their cars?? If not I would say it would be a good thing to start doing - and oh, also let them know about the loss of licence for 50kmh over the speed limit and to pull over and STOP when followed by a cop car that has a siren on and blue and red flashing lights going.
Isreaile: "Oh, I never stopped because in Isreal the Police drive everywhere with their lights and sirens going"

Ok, my turn to get my hackles up a wee bit. The amount of time I hear this bloody argument is starting to annoy me, but here it goes.
So you hire a car from a rental car company. Thats fine.
You get a speeding ticket in said rental car: Thats cool
You don't pay the said fine from said car and you leave the country :thats OK
But you honestly expect that when the cops come knocking for us to pay your fine we will???? I think that might be expecting too much. You sign a contract that says you will be liable for any costs incurred during your hire including fines. I can understand the annoyance at getting a fine in the mail but shit...... blaming the fact that it arrived through your door on the rental company? Thats not cool. :thud:
To put it in laymans terms. I can across and visited you. You lent me your bike and I happened to get a fine on it. Would you be happy if I gave you the fine and said, "Hey its your bike so the fine is your responsibility" :nono:
EDIT: I can understand you won't use the rental company again, but the reason you give is pretty Shitty mate.

I do not expect anyone else to pay my fines but if you are offering good man! Getting a fine for being only 11kpm or even 6mph over the limit is cruel. I was joking about the hire company and apologise for the offence taken. I did the crime so I will pay the fine, and as for the AA leaflet come on who reads that sh1t.
Grahameeboy: Only for going fast, though, the funny thing was about ten minutes earlier I passed a cop car on the mountain section at 155mph on a thunderace and got done doing 50mph in a 40zone.

This always amuses me, I generally tend to drive on the open road around 105-110. I have been passed cops before and have never had a ticket.
Now the speed limit is 100, obviously there is discretion and police are reasonable people.
Be realistic, you were doing 11ks over the legal limit. Pay the fine and learn.
The law is there and if you choose to ride/drive on the road you know it.

100, then lose license for 3 months, if I'm correct.
And it isn't 10 for each breach, breaches can go up to 25-50 points (more and more over the speed limit will also cost more), and they can apply multiple breaches at a time.

Just to add to the debate although most points have been covered. I am a Franchise Owner for one of the large American Rental Car operators in New Zealand. We always explain speed limits to our customers, most say if they speed and get caught they will pay. If we receive an infringement notice from a speed camera for one of our cars we notify the Police by letter telling them who the Hirer was at the time of the infringement. If we do not do this we can be liable for the fine as the vehicle owner. As I understand it most people are now chased for the money owing for fines even overseas. As you will apprecate over the Summer periods lots of speeding tourists return lots of $ to the Govt coffers.

sounds like a camera ticket. no points (demerits) incurred for those. you could either pay the 30 quid, never to be heard from again, or write to the address on the letter (the Infringement Bureau), asking for a photo of the alleged offence, and full discovery of all evidence that would be produced at a hearing - you are entitled to it for free. if they decide to continue after you've asked for all that, then at least you're only 30 quid down, and at least you've put it off for a bit.

And another stopped for doing 158kmh:( he lost his licence on the spot.
And another that passed a cop-car like it was standing still (it wasn't, it was doing 100kmh) Dangerous?? was it you?
The spokesman said he had no doubt that these riders were good riders but pointed out that at the higher speed if things went a little wrong it would all go pear-shaped pretty quick and that it could endanger other innocent road users. Good point Scumdog.
However in today's Dominion Post I notice that there's a front page article about the carnage" on the road.
In particular, two accidents in the weekend seem, on the face of it, to be the result of excessive speed for the conditions.
Police spokesperson has said (no name mentioned) that the Police will be considering enfiocing the speed limit even more strictly from now on.
My concern is, that, the enforcing of the speed limit will affect "mum and dad" drivers who inadvertedly exceed 110km/hr, rather than concentrating on those who openly and dangerously flaut the speed limits.
I believe it's a lot like drunk drivers. We could lower the alcohol limit all we like and they won't stop driving.
Do you believe the police will enforce the 100 more strictly or enforce the dangerous drivers more strictly, or it a case of "when you see bad behaviour you will do something about it"?
I'd hate to be in you guys position ...
Lou Girardin
16th January 2006, 12:14
It's always speeding isn't it, because it's simple and easy to campaign against, regardless of the truth.
Anyone who regularly uses that piece of road would know that it's bloody difficult to speed in a cage on a Sunday full of holiday traffic. Stupidity, frustration, incompetence were probably bigger factors.
He probably thought he was bullet-proof in his 'safe' Merc.
marty
16th January 2006, 12:36
actually it's not always speeding lou. that's just what you interpret it to be, and that's the easiest (read - least amount of effort into thinking up trolls for) thing to comment on. eba limits are being reduced, manner of driving offences are carrying more weight (boy racers amendment for example), and at the end of the day, big brother can't watch over idiot drivers all the time, as by default they'd be watching all of us, being idiots or just enjoying our sunday coro/22/kawhia/wairarapa rides, and you wouldn't want that would you?
it's just sad that bullet proof merc dude had to take someone else when he was trying to prove his point.

17th January 2006, 09:03
So why don't the cops set up surveillance of these high risk areas and pull the offenders down the road. You know, like speed traps in tunnels f'instance.
Of course you'd only write a handful of manner dangerous or careless tickets in a day, so the revenue stream wouldn't be that high. But on the other hand you might put some people off the road who deserve it, which would be a pleasant change.

Best fun this year was an advancd rider training day with the police in heavy rain, being goaded to overtake a police car in traffic who was doing the limit (60mph / 100kph) with the instructor on his bike hot on my tail in the wet at about 90mph (140K)....don't think I'd try it without the police bike following though!!

I'm curious... just what are the stats for accidents caused thru speed and what sort of speeds, and type of vehicles? Is there anywhere to look for this info?
The oft quoted figure by the road safety authorities (NZ, Aust, UK) is around 30%. When analyised by independant sources, accidents caused by people exceeding the speed limit runs around 7% - 9%.
The rest are, too fast for the conditions, following too close, inattention, etc.
But it suits the cause to lump them all in with speed.

Interesting.
So there is nowhere you can go to look this stuff up?

If he spoke to the officer direct and got the fine in his hand then they would have his details. If it was a camera fine, it would come to us first.
If he was pulled over he will get demerits, if it was a speed camera there will be no demerits.:shifty:

Easy way is just to pay thefine and be on my way, that is such a better system than here in the uk, we get "points" for everything. I am on 6 at the moment for speeding, 12 and licence goes back to DVLA. Got them all in the bloody car which is the worst of it. Lucky I am moving soon.
We get 3 points usually for speeding. After 3 years they are removed from your licence, how long do your "demerits" take to be removed?
