You could check out Britton Adventures. They're running a two day offroad ride in Taranaki on 11 & 12 March that'll cover some decent distance. It going to be based at Stratford too. You'll just need to throw an old plate on the rear fender and pretend the KDX is licenced.

It's all about risk appetite - what are the odds that you'd be stopped by the law when on a transit stage and are you prepared to risk it? Indicators, chain guard, lights, speedo, rear reflector and a mirror are all required for a WOF, along with rego. I've been on these rides where some bikes are obviously not WOF'd and licenced - Mike Britton won't stop you going out on the road so it comes back to your appetite for risk ( and size of wallet). A guy on the Canvastown ride last year got fined $150 for no mirror, remitted I think if he produced the bike with mirror to the cops the next day. Why not chance it??

used to ride an XL250 around Hamiltron; had 'pretend' licence plate (dunno where i picked it up from!), indicators, lights, no mirrors, no reg, no wof...
unreal i never got stung! used to get across town to farms etc...
was gonna suggest the "forgotten highway"....but then noticed your steed of choice!
good luck

That is barking mad !!! Think of the possible injuries if you fall off (on the rough stuff, as some of us are in the habit of) and get a mirror arm through the guts or something similar. (I do know someone who had their spleen removed by a car wing mirror in a bike v car moment where bike lost)
In the UK there are construction and use exemptions, so a road registered enduro bike does not have to have a mirror or indicators as it is obviously used predominantly off road, but it will still be road legal.
