View Full Version : Cages underpassing trend?
Kjell

Okay so not quite a trend yeah, only happened twice, but both this week.
Riding on urban roads (50-60k speed recommendation/posted limit) usually pumping along the right cage wheel groove, travelling at or very slighty above the posted limit, and have a car pass you on the left.
Firstly I check my indicators to be sure I am not indcating a right turn. Check my speed to make sure I am doing the limit. Trying to find a reason why they would think it would be safe and why they would need to pass me.
First incident was an older male (either that or he had flour in his hair) that passed me, and then literally sped off ~90k.
Second was a mid-20 female that passed me, doing about 65~70k and then 300m down the road, indicates (I was surprised at this) and turns right.
So the questions are : Am I paranoid? Do I have a Pass Left bumper sticker? Is this Auckland Drivers? A new Trend? Should I sit at home in the fetal position sucking my thumb and eat bon-bons to feel better? :eek5:

passing you in the same lane? or were you in the right lane?
can't believe someone would do that!
I hate cars trying to pressure me as I ride.. they get close, or don't let you into a gap as you filter.. fuckers

Yep, happens to me all the time...Lake Road being a popular place.
Maybe because I stick closer to center line, they think I am turning right without indicating but when I am doing 50k and have traffic in front of me I am not sure.....what are they thinking off??? Where are they trying to get to if there is a car in front of me.....even if I accelerate away they still try again...no idea what is going through their minds...if they have one!!
I was in my car one day..Lake Road again.....this 4WD mounted the kerb to undertake.....didn't make it but what can you say about that!!!!

After work yesterday I had some prick in a shity old falcon towing a boat that wouldn't let me pass down that narrow road from Maraetai to Duders Beach. Everytime I pulled out to pass he would move right over on purpose then swerve around the place to make sure I had no chance. Past the prick coming out of Duders heading to Clevedon with the one finger salute :finger:

They (ak drvrs) always scare the crap out of me & my BIL told me there is an unwritten law that anywhere there is room for 1 & ½ cars it is two lanes. Ahh!
Having said that I was coming into Carterton & there was this guy on a ZXR who decided to pass a truck on the left exiting town. What a brain surgeon!
Apart from acting like a krunt, what he hadn’t seen was the hitchhiker on the side of the road he was now zooming through. Didn’t hit him but it must have been close.

It's pays to dominate the road a bit in Auckland. Have some confidence in doing so and keep an eye out.

Yes, had this occur when I was still learning, (Papanui Road in Christchurch). I thought the same as you, maybe I'm indicating right or something, maybe I'm too far right and they think I'm turning, (like Grahameeboy), couldn't find fault with my riding so assume it's a result of riding in the right wheel track and being on a wide'ish road.
Gramps thought he would pass on the inside, put the shits up me I tell you!!
When he was along side me I upped the revs to match his speed :finger: Kept that up till he ran out of available road due to parked cars approaching on his front left, with me boxing him in he had to brake or turn into me. Punished him by sticking to the speed limit till we got into town, he was one unhappy pensioner.
Had the L plate on at the time which in my brief stint found does nothing but attract trouble.
From this I have learned to 'hog' the road when it gets wide so to stop others trying the same thing.

I stopped being undertaken as soon as I was finished with the L plate.
Happened two or three times.

Just ride in the line of the outside tyre tracks. Hopefully they may realise that you are actually in the same lane. Bloody annoying though!!

I don't have a problem with that having ridden in UK but I don't let them pass, I am always checking my mirror's so just pull in a bit but subtle like or speed up but still bloody annoying.....it happned to me a few times back in UK but more frequent here and for me it only seems to be Lake Road......
Nind u a few nutter signs at helmet soon makes them back off.......

If you've got an L plate on (which I'm guessing you don't? 350cc?) that tends to bring it on... other than that I've found that the best way to avoid it is just to hog the lane! :) If it's 1.5 lanes wide, stick right in the middle... and if you're in the right track and see someone checking out the left side of you, move over to the middle..... and then weave from left to right a bit to make them nervous... haha they tend to back off a little bit after that. If you stick exactly to the limit, people will think you're going slow. Unfortunately if you're in Auckers and you're doing less than 5kmh above the posted limit, then you're going "too slow" and people get frustrated. What amazes me is sitting in the slow lane on the motorway doing 110kmh and people are wizzing by me!!! have fun :)

Someone passed me in the same lane in Mission Bay.
All the traffic was backed up for the lights, and some bird was trying to cross the road further down by the car park, so I slowed down to let her cross, and some dick undertakes me, nearly taking her out at the same time. :(

LOL, just after reading this thread I heard the drowing drone of a scooter being pushed to it's limits, look up and see two scooters going for it down Sir William Pickering Drive.
The noise was coming from the rider who was PASSING ON THE INSIDE!!!

In all my years of riding, I've only had it happen to me twice, both last year, both on the YZF750R, both times I kindly adjusted their mirrors and smacked into their RF guards, sure, my barend is a bit scuffed, but I can guarantee they won't do it again.
Ridiculous thing was that they both happened in traffic on single-lane roads with not a single side-street to be had for quite some time.
And not seeing me isin't an excuse, there's plenty of HiVis piping on my jacket, and the bike is twice the volume, size and colour of my old grey cbr250.

Pretty much. Although this one stupid cow passed me on the left one day. I sat there stunned as she went deep into the angle car parks on the side of the road to get past me.
These days I have a tendancy to move into the left lane if I'm on a 50/60k road where there's plenty of room on the left. And make sure my left mirror has a very good view of behind me.

my brother n law had it happen to him here in hamilton
I came up to a round about and it had a huge shoulder on the road this ladie drove round me and pulled infront of me. I dont know what she wanted to prove. she ended up on this crazy angle 1/2 in the land and 1/2 on the shoulder. when the traffic started moving again i just rode round here

When you see them moving up on the left, move over and block them. Because if they fuck up it'll be you pushed into oncoming traffic.

I had someone try that on me (for the first time ever...) just a month or so ago.
I was in the RH wheeltrack and turned and looked at this guy over my left shoulder, slowing a little and glaring at him at the same time. He stopped doing it but I have to admit I was prepared to pour the power on if needed...
Dunno - hell of a strange trend and keep your eyes on your mirrors...

To Clarify : this is on a two lane road in residential areas. Full License, and usually visable given my helmet and lights, and HiVis stripes even with black bike and jacket.
I think Auckland drivers is the answer. :yeah: I'm a rider so I'm not included.
In Chch I used to get passed at really odd times when driving my Series1 Landy, but it gave me good lessons in being aware of what is around you.
The right wheel mark is generally the best place given the tar snakes, reseal camber, loose materials, parked cars...
Might have to invest in some gloves with titanium stripes to provide better impact, but given the probable retaliation with a ton (or more) or metal, I'm not sure I wanna start something.
Perhaps I will just remember the reason why I ride, and expect cagers to do something stupid as part of their quota system.

Give the drivers window a good smack, no damage and they pull their heads in after that.

Slightly different point of view. I usually try to dominate the road, but if someone is aggressive behind me, whatever speed I'm doing, if theres room I'll move left and let them past. I'll still get to where I'm going at the same time, and I don't have to worry about aggressive drivers behind me.
Doesn't matter what speed I'm doing.... if they want to exceed the speed limit by more, then it's their choice.

for sure, i was riding the other night in a que of traffic with a mate of mine in front on a bigger bike, the car behind me kept on coming up real close so i could see his headlight beams around the bike.. my mirrors aren't that good (typical FXR) so i would turn my head and touch my brakes to make them flicker... but its definately off putting... esp in a line of traffic...

Several have tried it with me.
Can't figure out the resoning:weird: but I guess there isn't much logic around at times.
But I "sensed" what they were about to do and just happened to warm up my tyres or flick around a pothole. That kept them behind me though they were close enough to read my speedo.

Keep an eye on your mirrors too!
Managed to move over far enough so that some wanker in a 4WD didn’t squash me! Pays to leave a bit of a gap when following, and watching brake lights also helps.

Sounds to me like all these cage-monkey's are just jealous and attempting to get one back on bikers :buggerd: for lane splitting them while they're stuck in traffic
It's a wonder they haven't outlawed bikes for being too dangerous to the owners due to the fact that 95% of NZ can't bloody drive! I'm waiting for it - Aunty Helen still has the reins. :brick:

The answer to this is to roll forward slowly and give the door a "gentle" nudge against the stop. Means it will not work properly again. Only did this once in Wellytown. I check over my shoulder to see if its clear to pull to the left but it aint; i turn back and hes taken off down the road again. When we pull up at the lights im beside the passengers door and i flip my visor and lean in the window and ask the fella if hes been drinking?
I nearly fell off my bike when he turned around to me with his pommie accent and said nah mate, its the first time ive driven in Auckland!! I was just gonna ask him if they'd changed the laws in teh UK about indicating and safe manouvers when i thought fuk it.. i'll ask him if he needs directions. I MIGHT HAVE UNDERTOOK HIM as he straight lined the last bit of twisties going all of 30km/h. Only on Thursday, I made it easy for a couple of fast bikes to get past me there by letting them straightline the same kink!!

Yup had it done to me by an ape in a Holden Wagon on a slowish peak traffic STH motorway. I was in the left lane (right track) at around 60 KPH holding a good distance behind the slow-fast-slow-fast crap that happens at that hour, lane to my right is nearly stopped, Kong sees the remainder of my lane and the shoulder as fair game. Hooted my horn to warn him, accelerated ahead and shifted further left which forced him to abandon his undertake (no rude gestures either). Mate did he do his nut waving his fist and honking his horn and gesturing that I pull over for a punch up. I aint Mr universe, couldn't be bothered with "Slack-jaw" loosing his rag on the roadside and, well (the truth) he was a heavily tattood gorilla of a man that looked like he may have a hammer or two tucked under his seat so I upped the pace, moved on and put some tin between him and I in case he knocked me off me bike. Its just the "Anything smaller than me is unimportant" mentality as truckies do it to cars and trucks and Cars do it to motorbikes and motorbikes do it to...(thats right we are the little fellas)..
Maybe it is some sort of pent up anger/revenge they have from previously sitting in traffic jams watching bikes happily lanesplitting.
