A run around car

I've been looking around for a car just a small one. Around a 2L car for running around. I was looking for something like a primera or an accord, leaning towards the primera. Does anyone know any other good options there are? e.g. cefiros, pulsars etc. Preferbly japanese

I paid $1800 (at an auction) for a 2L Primera between 6-8 months ago. High Ks (190+), but an absolute bargain in my book.

Cefiros & the likes ( 6cyl 2lt) are heavy on the juice compared to equivalent 4cyl 2lt cars. primeras, coronas, corollas, mirages etc would be the pick of the bunch for reliability & durability. but blah their tin-tops :puke:

It's an awesome little runner. If you're l;ooking for a run around you won't want a 2L (unless you're towing stuff) They chew through the gas as well as the bigguns. Gas prices aren't going to come down so a little charade would be ideal.

I picked up an 1.6,5spd '89 Sentra for $100.
Needed a CV and a few other bits of menial work done on it for a WOF.
Depends really on if ya "require" some style factor or not.
There's plenty of deals out there especially from people that "can't be bothered" sussing minor things out.

If you want to go for a bit of a ride there is a repo/trade in sale yard on the Gt South Rd in Manurewa, they have lots of cheep cars some (most) that need a few minor things done to them.
Go for a nissan or a toyota, the things will live forever if looked after!
Drop in for a coffee if you are heading this way.

Get a 1.3L Mazda Familia - our family has one as a 2nd car and I learnt to drive on it. This thing has never let us down in the past 3 years and it gets over 500kms off a full tank of petrol. I think the tank is 45 Litres or there about.

Powerwise if its just to get you from A to B and carry some shit around too then its perfect - its not powerhorse but it gets up to 120Kph without any trouble at all.

I used to have an 89 Sentra... picked it up for $2500 in 1999, in damn near brand new condition (go the old grannies!!!) with 160,000km on the clock. I had that car for 5 years, put another 110,000km on it, and the only mechanical work it needed was general servicing. Of course the comfort electrics were another story... interior light didn't work, stereo didn't work (my fault - long story), andthe clock only worked if the interior light was set to auto position... but for a cheap car which survived numerous trips to Palmy and Welly as well as regular fanging in Aucks, ya can't ask for much more reliability. (Front wheel drifting on the right corners was damn fun too :p )

We've got a 98 Primera as the family wagon. Downsides are that it's got a CVT transmission which would be weak for towing (we borrow my parents 2001 Primera sedan manual for that ;)) and the SR20 motor in it runs on 95 or above, which adds a few cents per litre to the running costs. But it's a typical modern car, ABS, twin airbags, climate control, electric everything, nothing will break before 2 million kays... Including auction fees we paid $8200 a year ago.

Our criteria was ABS, twin airbags and a wagon. The Accords mostly didn't have twin bags, or the ones that did were the newer shape that was out of our price range.

Nissan motors have a reputation for lasting for ever. Honda's are good cars too, and if you were talking 2006 models, I'd take an Accord Euro over a Primera anyday.

Guess it depends if your version of a "run around" matches ours ;)

I was mostly comparing between the 98 primera and a 98 accord. They seem to be quite a close match specifications wise, but was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with them? or matter of fact any car around that age that is worth mentioning. thanks

I got an R30 skyline, 2ltr 6cyl for $800 ran awsome no prob with eng etc but the electrics went to shit. If your going to get a small car get somthing with out electric windows etc cause they only cause prob and weigh the car down. 2ltr is a large sized engine for a run around. I recently bought a 95 sentra s/w for $1900 and its great. 1.6ltr and if I drive it nice I can get over 500km to a tank, much better than primera etc and s/w come in handy. I've had so many friends that need to borrow it to shift things and you always get free beer etc for lending it to them.

ps Apparently corollas and sentras ARE the most reliable cars around. I did a bit of research and talked to mechanics before I bought my car and thats what they told me.
