I have bought an old 84 DR250, and the kill switch doesnt work on it, I don't think its even wired in, and I dont want to keep having to stall the bike to stop it.
Can anyone give me a laymans explanation of what circuit the kill switch is wired into, and how to rewire it up.
Thanks troops.

On "older" engines with points ignition, the kill switch was wired accross the points. There-by with kill switch on no spark.
The '84 DR250 I dont know if it has points or CDI probably CDI....
My guess is you could wire a switch accross the low-tension side of the coil to earth.
There is a possibility that this could damage the CDI unit so check out what others suggest :)

you just need to open the circuit on the power side of the points.
or you could make up a little arm, on an actuator that pulls the plug lead off the plug, or you could just reach down and pull the lead off yourself....

It's usualy just a single wire to earth,so presume it shorts the coil neg.

I whipped me ole multimeter out, and did a continuity test on the lead from the kill switch, and it ends under the seat with another wire connector on the end of it, which was just flapping in the breeze, I also get a continuity reading on the black l-t wire on the coil, which I assume is negative, but I can check that with the multimeter when i start it tomorrow.
So this sort of points toward what Motu said, which is the grounding of the negative wire of the coil to earth, because the kill switch is definitely an earthing switch, I checked that out.
I'll see what happens tomorrow

This gets more confusing as I go, some say wire it from green wire on CDI, some say wire it to positive LT lead on coil, and make sure its earthed etc etc, but I can't see how it works, and that troubles me, as I do not want to cook my CDI or coil by rooting around with shit I don't understand.
BAH !!!!!!
btw, the maungatapu track was primo today, took the DR and klx out for a blast, and stayed out about 6 hours all up I guess. The shit that scared me is as we were leaving, a huge sports tourer appeared from the Pelorus side of the track, closely follwed by a 650 Dakar. Now the Sprots tourer flashed past, I think (don't quote me) that is was a new Beemer, and how on God's green earth he took that thing over that goat track of a road is beyond me, I was having trouble getting the DR to haul up some of the hills with the loose shale surface, and he rode down these same hills. Must have been a very good rider me thinks.

Sorry to post this in here, I know it's a trail bike issue, but I would dearly love to nail it today if poss.
My Old 1982 DR250's kill switch does not work, the switch is there, the wiring is all there, but the switch doesn't work. I have been looking on the net for days and days now, for a simple wiring diagram, which I am yet to find.
Some places say it gets wired into the green wire on the CDI, others say its to the positive lead of the coil. In short, I don't know who to believe, and I dont want to cook my bike's electrical system before my first VMX and laid back meeting.
Can anyone explain to me in laymans terms how to wire this up?.
Muchos grasias.

Grab a multi meter and check to make sure the switch actually works. If not get a cheap aftermarket one (my TT has a simple button you push to kill the engine). Sometimes it pays to check out the simple thing first.:blip:

Yer, I have run the continuity tester across the thing, it appears to be an earthing switch. It has a connection to one of the wires on the coil, and also to another female plug connector down the rear of the bike, under the seat, above the rear shock pivot.
Having no experience in off road bikes, I have been struggling to find the answers I need.
Zerax, we do have a spare bike now, I have the DR250, and Iron has the KLX300, and the KX250, the KX is pretty damn lethal. Look forward to having you back in Nelson dude, keep in touch.

There is your clue. All it does is earth the magneto to stop yourengine running. In the on position it is open and in the off position it is closed. All you have to do is wire the live wire to the correct side of it and it should go, or stop depending on position.
Hope this helps.

Thank you quickbuck, I will try that, thanks for the help, it's appreciated.

Bingo, traced the wire from the kill switch with my multimeter, found it was constantly earthed.... errr, thats not right, so I got the side cutters and clipped the wire leading to the coil earth tag (duh), and tested the switch again, this time, the continuity tester didnt beep, ok, all good, now, found the wire I believed to be the positive to the coil, and plumbed the kill switch wire into it, soldered it, and heatshrunk some insulation on, cranked the DR up, hit the button, and voila !!!!, instant engine stoppage !!!.
Thanks troops, I love thee all, even that Tristank guy, whom has a shady past, and a huge barbie doll collection.
