After the race meeting on sunday I was lucky enough to be invited to drive round the NEW Taupo racetrack. Only One word to describe it.
WOOOOW
Trust me on this one folks you will not be bored by this new track because its darn fantastic. The map really doesn't do it justice. Its just an endless series of corners and the elevation change is just outstanding.
Its not about outright speed with the straights not being very long at all
What it is about is corners--Lots of loverly corners with sandtraps if ya stuff up.
As at TODAY --the pits isnt sealed and the chicane from the drag strip straight right down the pit straight and the pit straight corner arent sealed -the earth works are finished and They are keen to get it done.
A word of warning -dust is making the track slippery but as soon as the grass grows that problem will go away.

And it's all politically correct being located in the middle of the north island etc - but from my spectator (and media) angle it's too far away from Auckland.

Puke is 30 minutes and 'I'll nip down for a look for an hour or two'.
Taupo I couldn't be arsed. It's 5 hours return.

We still need something closer to the largest population centre.

whats wrong with puke?
last time i looked it was un-fucking-real.
don't the words 'flat-out' mean anything?
I always thought we were really lucky having that place close by & could never understand why people knock it?

Well i was talking to taupo car club-They applied for resourse consent 5 years ago to build that track--If the officialdom work at the same slooow pace Im not too sure when Hampton downs is gonna be built.

i just thought it was fun(from a road-rider's perspective).
as for it being boring and dangerous that's a real shame.
glad to hear you racing guys have an awesome new facility. Hope You really enjoy it, it sounds excellent..

not saying you standards are low but if you go do a day at somewhere like Manfield and look at the runoff areas compared to Puke you'll see what we mean

Puke also isn't particulary challenging to ride compared to most of the other tracks

How does Manfeild compare to the rest of the tracks in New Zealand?

Its the 2nd shittiest, behind puke. Go to the south island, then you will see what a decent track is like.

Funny thing, ruapuna is getting a full resurface later this year and compared to manfeild it's surface is about 50 times better, don't know why the surface there is so worn out and bumpy. They could truck the old dug up track from ruapuna to manfeild and that would even make an improvement in the surface there.

Looking at the outlines (having never riden/driven on any track besides Puke, I can't comment on track surfaces), Manfield looks like it would be a very interesting track. What do you not like about it?

As far as layout goes its pretty awesome, got a above average degree of technicality too. The surface is arse though. Very worn out and not very well maintained. Got heaps of patches of different quality, always on the racing line. Apparantly its supposed to be getting resealed in the near future (next year or 2) so hopefully then it will be better. As it stands, the south island's tracks are the 3 best in the country, soon to be topped by taupo. Puke is the worst. Manfeild is well ahead of puke, but still behind ruapuna, levels and teretonga.

Manfeild is an intersting track.the floods I think played havoc with its surface.
