When it comes to having to ride at night, can you still see or do you guys have to change visors over to clear one or whats the story?

Change it no matter what, unless you dont have the visor with you, if you know you are goin to ride at night, make sure you put a clear one on and wear sunglasses during the day, you can see shit all with a tinted visor, even in the city with lights...

Up here Aucks, city riding at night is just fine cause there obviously so may street/building lights so you don't have any problems. If you are out of town going through rural roads with no street lights, dark tinted visors are a pain in the ass cause you get very very limited visability. When I had to do the twisties of Waitakere at night one time I had my tinted visor and couldn't see shit with the fog and mist floating in the air. I had to ride on that winter night with an oper visor and had to slow right down about 60 cause the cold air was hurting my face and makeing my nose red.

If you get the chance to change visors for a clear one during proper night blasts, definetly do it!

Edit: 2 smoker, I just read your posts. Maybe your ones are darker than mine cause mine is really fine in the city. The tint level is definetly the next factor that you have to consider.

Yea it is, mine is really dark, i do find it possible to ride with it at night, but can't see nearly as well...

I agree with Motoracer. I've got an iridescent blue visor which has a 5% tint I think, which is fine around town, but no good out on rural roads at night. I had to ride back from Raglan one night with it up, but luckily it was a mild night & not too many bugs around.

If I'm looking at a night ride, I make sure I take my clear visor with me. I put it in a helmet bag to protect it and put it in my pack if I'm taking that, or it fits nicely under my jacket kind of hooked into my waist at the side, but I'm slim (ha ha) so it doesn't get stretched at all.

I can't see jack at night if I've got my iridium or black visors on.. if I know i'll have to ride at night I'll either put the clear visor on while it's still light, or chuck it in my tank bag so I can swap em.

When i know i will ride at night i will either swap the iridium visor with a clear on on the shark or if i can't be bothered i'll just wear the old cms. Forget to do this once and ended up riding home with visor open (and drying out eyes) because i couldn't see f%$k all with it down. The shark "clear" has this cool sticker thing that gradually getts darker as the day gets brighter so slightly tinted during day and clear at night

My tinted visor is too dark for night vision. Some helmets only take mere seconds to change the visor over to clear, other helmets are a mission to change if you can be bothered...I usually only ride during daylight hours and use the cage at night anyway! :msn-wink:

I commute on my bike during the week and generally end up riding in the dark to and from work. I've got a dark tint on my Arai and it doesn't seem too bad in the city although it gets to be a bugger when the roads are wet. I know what your thinking.."why doesn't the silly bugger just use his clear visor all the time?". That's a good question.........now where did I put the bloody thing? :brick:

at night my tinted visor is shite. Full Beam headlights is jus a bit below normal lights when using my tinted visor. But i dont have a clear one for this particular helmet and usually have been out durin the day thru to night so dont carry anything like a clear one with me. So i put up wit it being dark, only problem is judging corners and stuff like that. :)

I have tinted and clear visors for my Shoei, and the tinted one is *barely* usable in the city at night. I've been caught out once (had to stay late at work, didn't have clear visor with me for the ride home) and didn't like it much.

Shoeis are easy to change the visor on, takes about 10 seconds. Not all helmet brands are that straightforward though. If your intended use is commuting/general transport as opposed to daytime 'fun' riding then I would say that buying a helmet with a quick-release visor for swapping between tinted and clear should be a major consideration.

You can put sunnies on under your helmet but I've broken about three this way, it just seems to bend them after a while.

I always have two for my Helmets one clear - with a Fog City insert, and one mirror/Smoke- which is too dark to use at dusk or night - I'm really lucky as my latest helmet is a Shoei XR900 and the visors can be swapped in about 5 seconds without the need to use any tools - thanks Shoei :not: :not: :done: :niceone:

Shoei the winner on the day. If I'm going to be out long, I'll take the clear visor too.

a handy alternative that I generally use except for out of town night riding is a blue (not iridium blue, just clear blue) for my KBC. In the day it drops the glare quite well to an acceptable level although not as much as a dark tint.. similar to a smoke tint. At night on the motorway and streets it take the glare of headlights and streetlamps without overly compromising my visibility and I can leave the visor down (no need to dry the contacts out).
As an added bonus, you don't get the bright spots when it gets scratched like a coated iridium etc type visor (had one of those and looked wicked but the bright patches were a menace).

but I've only seen solid colours for KBC so I don't know how available they are for other brands.

I've been looking everywhere, every shop tells me that they are not producing them anymore. Which sucks. :(

That depends on your model of helmet!

If the shop doesn't stock it they should be able to order it in for you, unless the model of helmet/visor is obsolete? :angry:

should be able to get tinited visors from whoever imports the helmets. I know Mount eden stock shark and I THINK i've seen them in red baron (anyone know?) so try them. alternatively, get online and order one from overseas. might work out cheaper too!
