Count the "F's" in the following text:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS...

How many did you count?
Rep awarded to the first person who gets it right.

6................?

Most people miss "OF" ?

The brain cannot process "OF".
Incredible or what ? Go back and look again!!
Anyone who counts all 6 "F's" on the first go is a genius.
Three is normal,
four is quite rare.

And the first time Juliet showed it to me I got all 6 - Looks like Biff and I are equally observant - or pedantic, or just pure genius.

You didn't use to proof-read code, perchance, Biff?

THERE ARE NONE, NOTE THE "F's". HAHAHAHA I WIN. THAT MEANS IT HAS TO BE F'S BECAUSE OF THE QUOTATION MARKS. OTHERWISE I WILL SAY 3

edit: WHAT A TRICKY ONE WITH THE OF. NICE.

I got 6, But must admit my eyes wondered past it first before I actually processed it. So I very nearly would have had 3 or 4. Good Trick!

How would it be if it was in lower case? Reading all upper case is not normal....no wonder no one can understand WINGA.In lower case picking out the tall letters would be easy - come back next year when we've forgotten and test us again in lower case....

Wot the Welsh git sed.

(Mind you after I got six I was so paranoid there was another 'hidden' F that I counted them another 3-4 times)

was I the only one that cheated at this by counting them with the find function?

Obviously or they would have all said six! I found five - missed the second OF on the first line - but if I'd read it through again I would probably have found it. Quite clever - and the bit about if it was in lower case would it have made a difference is interesting. Yes, it would have - because we look for the shape of a letter and they look completely different in upper case.

I used a "find" function: part of a neural networked pattern recognition system with optical input (among others) and audio output - serves me fine most the time.

It got me the first time I seen it as well but now I know what to look out for. Though I dont think "of" is the only word, I am pretty sure there are others as well. Bit more research me thinks...

good on ya everyone who gave it a go those who got 6 without cheating I give you a big thumbs up.

I told Wolf last night he was not to answer as I had tested him on this once before. (he has a photographic memory.) (Enough said.)

Yeah the brain processes a sentance written in capitals differently since we associate captials with acronyms

There are 6. All you have to do is highlight the text and type ctrl-F for the text search. Then search on the letter F and count how many it finds.

As I understand things, its not that the brain cant see them, the letters are all picked up by the optic nerve and transferred thru to the brain. It however, second guesses what the sentence will read based on the shape and strength of the stimula that it receives. In other words - it doesnt process information it doesnt need to as soon as it figures out what it thinks it needs to it dispenses with the rest of the information. I think there is also something to do with the fonts used. Upper case doesnt contain enough visual differences so the rods and cones in your eyes dont pick it up and the brain substitutes (not sure if thats true or not - just something I heard).

Makes you wonder what else yoru missing. :)

From memory I think the limbic system is reponsible for filtering senses (the thalmus) and the left parietal lobe for understanding writing. I did read up on it once, but never paid attention to it.

There is another part of the brain that discards most of the pressure senses - for example, your clothes touching your skin, the weight of your body on the chair, the temperature of the air against your skin etc. All is picked up, but most is discarded.

The is a nother bit that makes you aware of your tongue :)
No matter where you put your tongue in your mouth it feels uncomfortable.
Its triggered by people pointing out that you are aware of your tongue. :)

There is a part of the brain that really really hates being made aware of things :)

What?

So you will not want to be made aware that there is no such word as "stimula" then...

Nope, all you have to do is read carefully and be mindful the fact that the word you mentally pronounce "ov" has an "f" in it.

The brain is a good pattern sensing system but can be fooled. If you take your time, you don't need to cheat using ctrl-F.

Hmmmm, methinks you got 6 because your brain squashes all words together. Have you heard of spaces? they tend to make things easier to read, try it sometime lol. :devil2:
