View Full Version : Busa for Quasi ?

Im having a rethink about bikes at the moment for these reasons

1/ I have to go fast to be comfortable on the 636 otherwise I get really sore wrists, Im 40 ya know
2/ My Fembot wants to go out on the bike more but doesnt like sitting on the back of the 636 (cant blame her its freckin nasty back there)
3/ Im not really inot hard out sports riding on the road
4/ I want to do more touring in comfort

so takinf all the above into account, I then sit back and think about options and here they are

CBR1100 xx
VFR800
1050 triumph
ZZR1200
Hayabusa
GSX1200 bandit
K1200S BMW
FJ1200
DS1000 Ducati

as well as some naked options even a Buell XB12X

So I went out and looked at all of these and so far I keep going back to the Busa, OK its farken fast but I can control myself well in that deapartment.

Ive ridden alot of them and for one reason or another I didnt like it for techo or price reasons.

The Busa is beautiful in everyway, its awesome two up (I think) and covers off everything I need it seems very comfy etc etc etc.

But I havent ridden one, Im looking at the 2006 new one, they have 5 to choose from but no Demos, they say its a busa and it is sold on its merits on that basis, Im not to worried about not riding it first as I can take it back if I dont like it (apparently)

What Im interested in from the forum of KBrs is your opinions on my dilemma and your thoughts on options for me as well as your thoughts on a Busa ?

Cheers

Being 40 myself, and having ridden a 'busa, it put more weight on my wrists than my R6 did.

Try and find one to ride before you buy.

Really, I find the sitting position more relaxed than the 636, how tall are ya ?

177cm. It felt like a long reach and the pegs were really high.

The Blackbird seems to be rated as best for comfort of the "hyper tourers". Last time I looked though BIKE rated the 'Busa as one of their Ten Best of the Best.

Have fun choosing...

Sounds like the decision is made. Your tyre man will love you.
But I think the Sprint ST is a better tourer and the Bandit is unbeatable value.

What about the ZX12, ZX14 or ZZR14?

Go either Busa or BBird man, they are both nice to ride 2up and have fairly relaxed riding positions, the Bbird being the most relaxed.

They both have plenty of power to burn and both handle quite well for their size, actually you can ride either of them comfortably at speed and they are more nimble on the road than you think.

IMO I would take the Busa purely because it is a lot angrier than the Bbird and I don't like the linked brakes on the Bbird.

Being in the 40 range I'm surprised that you quoted cm in height - must be a parental thing. (sorry no hijack attempt, just observation)

As far as the Busa goes (farken fast) Bikes are as individual as peoples taste. If that's what you like, the position/style/handling etc, then go for it. I would say, as it appears you have, ride a bike that is as close to it as possible to egt the feel knowledge you're after then all the other considerations are merely research.

Remember that haunting roar of the vtwin ya had? Dukes are competively priced these days compared to what they used to be. The 1000DS would be a great tourer, with a comfy pillion seat and still stacks of torque. I used to cart pillions around a lot on my 800 and never got any complaints about the seat. Ive only heard good comments from people who own them. Worth a test ride anyways

Re Busa...there's an exquisite yoshi-piped one Sarge has in at Colemans too. Sounded WICKED and looks superb!
My personal choice would be the Busa but your choice...one I'd love to be making at the moment!

Two words Brett - "Busa" an "Turbo" , fuck yea

Lou brought up a good point though, the Trumpy Sprint ST would be worth a look, (not as) Big Dave (anymore) had one (still got one?) for a while, i reckons it's a pretty trick looking peice of kit, and with the right rider could hack it with the sport bikes too, and still be comfy as, but what do one of them go for compared to the Busa? O and the ST sounds fkn cool with a set of pipes on em too.
You know my thoughts on the busa already and don't listen to Flame she doesn't have a clue whats she's on about, just when you thought she'd got it right on the K5 she buys a Ducati :oi-grr: must be a chick thing :Pokey:

New Busa $19,990 new ST1050 $21,490, in saying that I get $2k more at hamilton motorcycles for a trade on the 636 so that puts the Busa and the ST on a par with each other.
I think the Busa has better looks and more street cred ?

Hi Quasi

I tried both the Busa and the Blackbird when looking for the new bike. Both are excellent, I'm 6'2 so it had to be comfortable. Went with the Blackbird on price in the end and loving it (except the seat which we are getting re done)

It's down to personal choice at the end of the day, but you have to test ride. The guys in the Auckland shops had no problems with me test riding the Busa as they had second hand ones in at the time.

Had alot of fun

cheers

every busa pilot will say get a busa, and every bird pilot will say get a bird.

i rode both, tried to be objective, subjective, reactive, proactive, sensible, silly etc etc, and still came back to the bus. a good comment up the page, was the busa is just that - a busa, and has the potential to be a bit 'angrier' than the bird (eve if that's just a perception).

the tyre man will be happy if you buy either bike.

weren't you saying just yesterday though that you were considering getting out of bikes?

and i rode the TL for the last time last night (it's now sold) and the power felt like a scooter compared.....

Does it need to be? Sure you get little improvements along the way, but until you go and ride them, make sure you stay away from the "because its a busa" kind of thought pattern (not that I'm accusing you or anything!).

I'd love a busa, sure. But if I had to choose between the busa and the sprint, i'd pick the sprint. But all you're going to get on here is opinion. So go ride them!

If I listened to people here i'd probably have a gsxr :P

Hey Quasi. I'll be the odd one out here (or maybe just the ghey one)

I dunno about price - but have you seriously checked the Beemer out?

123kw - and all of it useable in the best beemer fashion. 6 speed box, a 19 litre tank that'll get you somewhere round 300km. ABS, Optional ESA system, plush riding possy etc.

This bike would probably still be growing with ya in a couple of years and you know the kind of reliability you'll be getting (not that the other bikes aren't reliable). Plus they aren't a dime a dozen!

For a few extra bucks i'd look at it.

18th January 2006, 14:31
Think this might be a bit late, but it sounds like your heart is stuck on the Busa...there might be plenty of bikes that you SHOULD get (Id consider ZX12R, Blackbird, Sprint ST) but in the end, you dont always want to ride the most technically virtuous bike...you wanna ride the bike that makes you feel good...and the pillion of course. A Busa is a Busa.

Every person I know who is defending a charge has had delays in the court system, every time they have to pay to have their lawyer represent them and all that happens is it gets put off, you end up spending heaps on lawyers fees and never get to see the judge for a year or two, is this justice?

Da Busa is a fine bike. Just gotta watch the gearbox between 5th and 6th. Sometimes won't engage properly (Time for a oil-change syndrome) depends on the quailty and condition of the oil..... Thats probaly the only fault they have.... What other bike on the market has been going strong for so long? Nothing radical has been changed with the bus since release back in '99. That must mean something.

As for riding them, they are a bit of work compared to a Gixxer 1000 (not as flickable) but extremely pillion friendly. First thing I noticed while test-riding the Busa for the first time was; Sure-footed. No front wheel washout/vibrations like you do on the lighter bikes. Feels nice and hangs onto the corners. Wide sweepers it eats, tight narrow 20kph corners it hates.

Whateva you get Quasi just make sure you 'both' take it for a thorough test ride, who knows, the Busa might be an awkward fit for your frame??

From experience, the Blackbird is an exceptional machine, especially 2up, it doesn't feel any different with a pillion on the back! The linked brakes take some getting used to and in the end I got tired of having to give the front brake such a handful to slow it down quick (the 954 brakes shocked me in comparison), but they kept it nice and horizontal under heavy braking! I rode it on the track too and it was again a great performer. As has been touched on, the stock seat is a tad uncomfortable so is best replaced with an aftermarket touring seat for better comfort! The Bird is also a much better looking bike than the Busa IMO, and the Busa is faster in a straight line, even though I never saw one pass me at top speed, eh M1CRO hehe!

Enjoy the new ride when it comes mate! :ride:

Ps. Be prepared to adjust to the huge increase in weight from your 636, the BIG bikes are a different ride altogether.

They are no slouch in the corners either with the right pilot, had one chase me coming in to coro with him 2up and had to push fairly hard to escape in the twistie stuff, was cool watchin him get it nice and low through the bends in the mirror (didnt help my lines though)

An odd mix of bikes in your list there, Quasi.

Any interest in big naked muscle bikes? Also if pillion comfort is an issue there are a few on your list that may irritate the piles of your nearest and dearest.

A mate of mine is selling a mint nick ST1100. Almost 100,000km plus bits and bobs for $11,000.

If you're considering a Multistrada you should add the V-Strom.

I wouldn't go for a Hirebus or Blackbird. Not a good fit for the taller rider and ferkin uncomfortable for long trips, unless you added higher clip-ons and a big double-bubble screen.

Multistrada

If you're blind with no sense of touch so you can assemble a mental picture of the Multistrada, by all means buy one. However DO NOT ride it in public without some sort of large cover over the bike. Some eco-looney will recycle that giant lump of visual garbage on the move if it isn't disguised.

The Busa feels rock steady at 200+kmph, extremely stable two up with the exhaust nearly scraping the ground and it's brakes very well.

M1CRO

Looking through this thread there are quite a few thoughts on what decision you should make. I thought I would share mine :)

Firstly, a bit of history... After riding for some 20+ years, I moved up to the 1K level around 1988 and stayed up there ever since. I moved to Australia and tried to find a bike to cruise around. Looked at the Blackbird, but settled on the Busa.. I found it comfortable and I was more interested in a sports/tourer to load a pillion and other stuff on. So bought one in Sydney, and cruised around NSW & QLD (two Sydney to Brisbane trips, and another long one out to Western Plains Zoo)...

Moved back to NZ late 2004, and to be quite honest, I couldnt bear to part with my "trusty steed", so I bought it back with me. The Busa has done me really well, and is up around the 55K mark.. Long trips (over 1000km in a day), taupo track day (extremly hard work for me that was) and chasing certain other KB members (eh Zed!? Affman!?) lol

The overall comfort and speed is something to be experienced, but to be quite honest, twisties (esp being 2 up) is quite hard work for me. I have had no mechanical issues, but seem to be chewing through the tyres lately (nearly 2 sets (thats 2 front & 3 rear) in the last 12 months).. I've done a few mods mainly cosmetic (LED's front and rear, throttle lock, braided brake lines etc)

Your more than welcome to have a blat around on the Busa if you want (after I get another rear tyre this week :(...

By the way, my double bubble has now been put on, and my GPS system will also go on this week :)
Edit - the fuel cap has also been replaced with a keyless one (you can see the old one in the photo :)

The busa is the one to get Brett, of course you can let me "test" ride it for you.
Somone referred to the K5 earlier, they were meaing a K5 busa as GSXR1300K5, you might be able to find one a lil cheaper abroad, but ya know support your local. Really you wanna buy one of the earlier ones 99 the one with the 340kph speedo (not that it does that, but it looks fkn cool) they started taming em down a bit too, the midnight black edition was the shiz.

Ummm, that would be telling... Not too sure if they are legal here but they missed it on the VIN inspection when it landed in the country, so it must be! :)

Mirco ever used the throttle lock as an excuse to the po po?

yeah the new 2006 , K6 model is full power again, it is not restricted in anyway, they used to be but with the onset of the kawasaki zxr14 they have changed back...apparently

Help me out here: throttle-lock is like cruise control in a car? Imagine it could be useful when wanting to shake my hand out from cramp.

I think sAsLEX is saying that any non-turbo is normally aspirated. Im assuming that an injected bike is still normally aspirated. Dunno.

19th January 2006, 08:35
It's a way better price (second hand anyways), better made, more comfortable ANNND it doesn't attract fanboys. Plus it's got the whole sleeper :zzzz: thing goin on, doesnt look as fast as it is :kick: . You could probably make it just as fast as a busa too.

What about a kwaka ZZR1400 (200hp shame about the face) or a zx12?
AS FAST AS A BUSA? NO I DONT THINK SO , PART OF WHAT MAKES THE BUSA SO FAST IS THE AEROS . IF YOU TRIED TO MAKE THE BIRD HAVE THE SAME HP AS A BUSA YOUD JUST LOSE THE BOTTOM END AND MIDRANGE TO DO IT . AND FORGET ABOUT THE NEW BIRDS ,THEY ALL HAVE EURO 2 EMISSION STANDARDS AND LOST A STAGGERING 12 HP 2 DO IT , AND THATS THE BIRD THEYLL BE SELLING HERE, FUCKEN HONDA SHOW ME THE BEEF

The fact that your new bike will be injected does not stop it being Naturally Aspirated, as for the moment it will lack a Turbo or Supercharger.

NA and turo etc refer to how the enigne breaths, and carbed or FI refer to how the engine feeds, kinda.

2/ My Fembot wants to go out on the bike more but doesnt like sitting on the back of the 636 (cant blame her its freckin nasty back there)

My partner has a busa (2nd one, he wrote off first one on diesel, spill and went right back out and bought another - cos he loves them so much) Commutes, tours, weekend rides, does flying quarters. As the pillion I can thoroughly recommend, big fat comfy seat and solid grab rail. Done many miles touring 2up

I wouldn't go for a Hirebus or Blackbird. Not a good fit for the taller rider and ferkin uncomfortable for long trips, unless you added higher clip-ons and a big double-bubble screen.

Aye?
How tall are you exactly?
I'm 6'2" and found the Blackbird an excellent fit.
The Blackbird is an awesome machine, but it is 200cc less than the busa and older in design (first released in 96). The Hayabusa is definately quicker.

As for 2 up on a long trip the Blackbird is excellent. Christine even slept the length of the desert road at about 0 degrees coming back from palmy.

Would highly recommend the Blackbird, particularly value for money.

No worries touring on the Busa.

We are carrying :
Spare clothes, wet weather gear, tent, sleeping bags, blow up mattresses plus odds and ends like cameras, books etc.
Over our three week xmas break we traveled Wellington, Nelson, Punakaiki, Hasst, Lawrence, Lake Tekapo, Hamner Springs, Kaikoura and back to wellington which was about 2500k.
Then Wellington, Gisbourne, round the east cape to Opotiki, Taupo, Napier and back to Wellington which was about 1700k.

You get sore legs and bum after a long day riding, but most of the time its fine.

Go on, you know you want to :)

take it down Meremere and show the busa boys how's it done.

When you get bored, bore it out to 2ltr and turbo it. If you're feelin a little giddy, add NOS. Should be good for around 400hp on a light boost and only a little NOS. Be great for keeping up with everyone else 2-up (or so you tell the Fembots)
