View Full Version : How far can they see?

I'm curious as to what the range of the cop's revenue devices are?
Like, how far away do you need to be for them to zap you with their radar/laser gun?

far enough that they got me today, between Tirau and Cambridge. I wouldn't think it was more than about 100 metres this time though. 113kmh - how embarrassing is that?

Pitty, I had all that info (made them send it to me when defending a speeding ticket), but dumped it reciently when I moved and had a big clean out.
I believe that the laser can ping you from around a Km with a straight line of sight, but that comes down to about 500-600M in practicality. I'm sure that one of the nice plods on the site can give you the exact numbers though. Or you could request the guides from the police.

The reason I ask is because I seem to see them way before they see me giving me enough time to slow down. I was going 140kph today and I spotted the cop ahead and slowed down steadily to 105kph and cruised passed him without any worries.
I'm not sure how far he was when I saw him, its hard to tell but basically I could just make out a parked white car with patches of yellow and blue and a hump on the roof.

Local cop at Hukarenui just north of Whangarei has about 1 1/2 km either side of his house. He'll ping you without you ever knowing he was standing on his own doorstep.
Last thursday morning about 10.30 he got a guy riding a maroon BMW K100 at 128 km.
Remember this if you ever head up that way,he lives in the house on the small hill behind the Huka pub.Sits in his car in his own drive way when he's off duty an has nothing else to do.If you stop at the huka for lunch he can see you arrive and leave from his lounge.

600m i was told by the good cunt who clocked me on christmas day coming down to auckland from warkworth at 180kph and let me off with a $400 fine and my liscence:woohoo: :shifty:
But depending on how thick the cop gauges you to be he'll tell you he can clock you 5k away behind a high rise apartment block:no:

iwould imagine its more difficult to get a reading from further away too ?

Alright, that's a mixed bunch of answers but I'm sure one of our local cops on the site will come to the party soon enough to clarify things. Whilst on this note, any idea the distance a radar detector's warning goes off from?

That wouldn't happen to be the bright blue XR6 or 8 that I happened to see on the side of the road giving out tickets?

No, he has a standard highway car,but I did see two unmarked cars in the area around the same time.
all last week they were really hot between Whang's and Kawakawa after the resent deaths in the area.
Unrelated, but the silver XR8 pulled over a car just south of Huka, the driver wasn't looking at what he was doing as he pulled over an drove into the ditch.
The ditch is around 2-3 meters deep.:shit:

I heard they can get u at 2000 mtrs in line of sight... but I also heard they need to clock you at a steady pace for a second or two, so If you break hard they cant get a lock on your speed.
Thats why when riding ingroups they have a hard time clocking just one bike because the the speeds vary... thats just my opinion thou:whistle:

Yeah Jackrat there is a blue XR8 as well, last time I went that route I saw roughly 5 pigs and a tax van at the end of a overtaking lane. Saftey.. yeah :/
From other comments I have seen by cops they can get you line of sight but it can take a few seconds to lock onto a bike as they have a small surface area and radar return 'signature' as such when compared to a tonne or so of car. Wayne, as you may know they are using 'instant on' mode now so they can ping you as soon as the radar is activated. That mode is NOT accurate as the manufacturers say it should only be used for testing or something like that, might pay to ask that question in court should it ever have to arise ;)

Guys, if you're going to ride at license loosing speeds, get a detector. Don't let them win so easily. My V1 has picked them up at least 2 k's away. The BMW guy wouldn't have got pinged if he had one - simple. Unless of course they use instant on at which point you should see em anyway.
Even up the game - get a detector!

Get a detector it will save you. I rode from auckland to russell yesterday,at a average speed of 135,my detector saved me 4 times,i have just got back home, left russell at 5.30 i didn't muck around, the blue xr8 tryed to get me,my detector picked him up,i had plenty of time to slow down, then at ruakaka strits there were 2 cops there they didn't get me either?

It is their visual of the person speeding and the speed recorded on the radar could have been from any one of the group that is why they ask you "so how fast were you going then" to get you to admit to speeding.

While the expensive units preform very well cheaper units don't seem all that far behind, response times and distance detected. Its the instant on that one has to watch for and quickly respond to.

This detector seems to be looking like a better idea each time I think about it. So what are the recommended brands/models or should I go about researching them and reading up on them over the net? I really don' want to fork out $600 only to have my detector rendered useless within a few months because the cops 'upgrade'? their devices.

What do they paint the stelth bomber with? A matt black bike thats invisable to radar would be the go!

It's not the paint, it's the shape. Some of the boys on ZX12r.com (rocket scientists, real one's) did some tests on the 12 and found it's only the headlight that lets you down....

So you want a matt black impulse with the pop up headlight. Still only save you from laser though - the radar would still get ya.

Fuck detectors just ride smart, if you're going like a twat on m/ways n shit what ya expect is gonna happen, if you speed certain areas like the straights into Kopu and places known where cops camp out you're pretty much just asking for it, any other place that your're unlucky enough to get pinged 6th gear works wonders..........
On a side note, what i've heard is that on a tripod the laser can hit upto 3km line of sight but hand held they are down to 1 - 1.5km, but yes accuracy is better at closer distance, and if a cop claimed he clocked you at "134kph" at 1100m (handheld) if contested in court you could prolly argue enough to be let off with a lawyer, which i think is why a lot of cops try to get you as close as possible.

Stalker radars will get you at about 2km away, the laser has a max range of 1400 metres but it has to be held really steady to pick anything at over 700 metres - generally you will find yourself pinged at between 300 - 600 metres, depending on the site.
A tracking history needs to be established so the cop has to be able to see you too and confirm your vehicle is travelling at the speed showing on the radar or laser, so although the radar will pick up a vehicle from a good distance, you need to be in sight as well.
The radar is accurate regardless of leaving it on transmit or using instant-on. Don't know where that myth came from.

Then again there is always the pursuit check. This is where they follow you for a distance and issue the ticket based on the certified speedo reading.

Stalker radars effective range is much less in instant on mode, less in adverse weather too. Good detectors will always 'see' the radar before it gets a reading because the effect is like that of a torch. You can see a torch from far further than the torch will illuminate an object.
Laser range is dependant on how still the operator can hold it. Just like firing a weapon, they're always more accurate from a rest than held by hand.

As posted on another thread, my longest distance for a radar 'hit' was 1.7km, that's exceptional, mostly 300 to 500metres on average on the open road.
Laser? about 250-400metres.

Of course, I have never been caught despite doing speeds that would warrent attention from cops. But as you said, 'ride smart' - this is exactly what I do and its continued to work for me, I never speed on motorways or main highways or in residential zones etc. I save my hard riding for twisty backroads but my concern is that I might just be unlucky sometime and unfortunately I only need to be unlucky once to lose my licence. This is where a radar detector would come into it.
The radar detector is not intended to allow me to speed whenever and wherever, I do not want it to change my 'smart riding' technique but merely to suppliment it and save my arse from those rare unlucky moments.
As for the 6th gear, unfortunately for me my 6th gear will achieve speeds fast enough to lose my license yet slow enough to be caught. I don't think doing a runner on a 4 stroke 250 is very wise.

just like to mention that, theoretically, the valentine 1 detector is the only detector that outranges police radar. i read somewhere (dont quote me on this) that 400 metres is approx the max distance police should take a reading to be accurate. but its probably one of those urban legends about cops that are utter bullshit, like how they "cant use instant on radar" or "they cant hide in bushes" etc etc

All the name brands will detect radar further than the radar can get a lock.
