Ok, I'm have a really serious think about gettign rid of my bike and getting a new one! (bloody 2 strokes!!)
What I've done so far
Piston kit (normal no prob)
All rear linkages bearings, plus swingarm bearings (some bearing collapsed)
Rear wheel bearings (were siezed, got to do the fronts yet)
New clutch (but it's still a bit iffy, the basket is worn??)
and now the crank seals have gone. And it's going to cost
$35 for seals
$37 for crank bearings
and $241 for a crank kit and that will give me a new conrod, bearings and crank pin.
:argh: + labour
Do you think it's worth if for an old RM that will probably die from some other bloody problem next? What else should I do to it/can go wrong next? :brick:
I can get a new KLR300 for 7k odd and have a warranty!!!!or a new KDX200 for 7k!!!

I reckon just dont bother and save your money and sell the bike as it is.

I can do the seals for $35 and leave it at that.

why does in need a new crank??
if the seals have gone you should be able to do it yourself, if you have a bit of mech experience.

Is the big end bad ? If not, you don't *have* to do it.Ditto main bearings. Also, check the manual (or, better, a forum for the model). Quite often with singles you can replace the seals without splitting the cases. Not "official" way, of course, but sometimes you can pry the old ones out from the back with a PryingThing, and push the new ones in. Works for twins too, except for the centre seals obviously. Doesn't apply to all bikes though .

just have to do the maths of A) how much is it worth now? B) how much would it cost to fix? C) how much would it be worth? if A+B doesn't equal C then don't do it

I can do teh seals without pulling the crank out blah blah blah, so I'll do that and see how it goes.
I'll just make sure i ride with someone.

LOL - yeah, you and me both on that front. We need to find someone to tag along with a nice reliable 4x4 quad or something to drag us home! The rangers quad did the trick the other weekend when I broke down, but he was trying to tow me from the quad's tow bar - not a good look, it kept trying to pull the bike over. Best to tow from somewhere higher up I think.
Keep us posted on how you get on, and if there is anything I can help with sing out.

yeah I think if we both go for a ride we need a third!! lol
Wellyman is keen I think.
I'm looking very seriously at a new KDX200 $7500 and you get aftermarket bars and pipe with it. I still like 2 smokers, but my RM is being a right cunt.

just a quick question, how do I check if teh big end adn crank bearings are ok? do the seals just let go after a while?
now to try adn get the clutch and fly wheel off.......
WRT
23rd January 2006, 12:30
Dunno about the crank, other than just checking for play. Let me know how you get on with getting the flywheel off, mines still being a b!tch (see my other thread). If my highly-specialised super duper ground down gear puller does the trick (will know on Tuesday night after its been ground down some more) then your more than welcome to borrow it.

Thought it was the crank seals from an earlier thread with fouling.
If the flywheel has a decent amount of freeplay then the mains are toast, but there will be a tiny amount as they are C3 clearance. Yes seals do wear, worse with our petrol, but no expensive to fix.
Motionpro make a nice flywheel puller. use grease on the end of the pushy bit & oil on the threads. do it up semi tight & a sharp knock should ping it off easy.

dude!! get the KDX!!they are wicked bikes,
in the trail they are perfect, better than a MX bike, becuase the power is more useable. EG, i can ride in the bush waaay faster on my friends KDX200 than when im on my Dads YZF.
this is beacuse it is softer on long rides, and after 15min on hte Yzf you arse hands etc all hurt like hell.
Just my $00.2
now good luck on the seals ;)

man! So I pull my bike to bits to have a go at getting the clutch off, adn I find this behind teh primamry gear. Plus the crank seal was just sitting loose!!!
http://www.canze.org.nz/forum/hosting/bikebits 004.jpg
Now to go get a bigger socket to get that dam clutch off!!!
Here is teh seal.
http://www.canze.org.nz/forum/hosting/bikebits 001.jpg
It's kinda hard to see, but it's right behind the primary gear.
Should I do the mag crank seal at the same time??? It's a fucker trying to get the nut undone!

I would
That bit of metal looks like the rocker thingy that is used to open the ex port timing valves , but yes I would be into that seal
To get the clutch centre nut off Used a long breaker bar
wedge a rag between the clutch gear teeth and the primary gear , put the bike it top gear ...( I also use a bit of wood and slide it through the wheel and under the swingarms
Spread the load sort of thing . then haul away ( make sure it isnt a left hand thread !! even then you willfeel it tighten )

Any bike needs maintenance esp a MX bike. The KDX will eventually need work, power valves etc seize on them (I had one).
Better this than some cruddy new breed 4 banger spiting it's titanium valves into the way of the piston.

Agreed there ! , I have just pulled an old Cr crank shaft assembly apart, and it looks like I can quite happily rebuild them at home , So that was the last hurdle in being completly self sufficient ( assuming the Rod kits are cheap!!)
So now I can completly renovate my CR engines which means I can spank that naughty throttles arse ...and if it goes bang....we can rebuilt it YEAH !!!!

Yeah she's not too flash, I got the primary gear off and what it looks like is the race has collapsed. The bits that hold the balls in place have all gone to shit and chewed out crank seal housing! FFS!! So I found a engine rebuild kit off eBay for under $200 which includes conrod, pin, piston rings all seals, all gaskets etc and I'll get the main bearings replaced, the big end done and hopefully I can get the seal housing machined out and press adn sleeve in. otherwise get a new housing (I really don't even want to ask the price on that though.......)
The entire housing isn't chewed out though, so I wonder if I can get something like kneed-it (that metal epoxy stuff??) and fill the grooves?? so you think a sleeve would work? I don't know how well that stuff works under heat.....
So gutted....
Anyway after all of this, I may as well keep the thing for a while now. Not much else can really go wrong (I rfreaking hope!!!). I've stripped most of teh enigine down and I'll get a shop to split the crank and check out the rest.
Bah!

30th January 2006, 20:53
If the bearing housing is still good enough to locate the bearing (ie it's scored, but the bearing and seal still fit in in the correct place) then you can repair it with some called JBWeld. It's often listed on Trademe or there's a NZ agent. It's good stuff.
F5 Dave
31st January 2006, 08:26
So just where the seal sits it is chewed? No problem Devcon or JB weld will fill it in. Kneedit won't stick, it has it's uses but this is not one of them. Ally will need a clean with a decent solvent first then will be cool to epoxy to. Heck PM me your address & I'll post you a small tube of JB (bought 1/2 doz box on aforementioned tardme).

I'm taking it to the guys at spectrum and they are going to split the crank for me and get into it. It's just a bit too much for me.
I'm thinking about doing the bearings insde the gearbox at the same time. In particular the drive gear (the sprocket one??) and it probably would be a good idea to swap out the waterpump seals etc.
Also the clutch sticking, a guy told me to file out the grooves, is this a good idea?
Anythign else I should do? I may as well keep the bloody thing for a while now. I've spent too much on it!!

Yes to all, also check the water pump shaft for wear and the kick start ratchet mech for wear ...replace now while its apart

Wellllll
The Seal housing is fine. No problems as the damage was very minimal.
So, I've the bearings are getting changed and at the shop now. then tehy can fit the seals, and I'll put it back together adn I'm very temped to sell it ad get a newwer bike. It goes well, but it's just old and I think that while I can afford to upgrade (trying for kids really soon) I may as well do it.

2nd February 2006, 22:56
Once the kids arrive the wife goes nuts with the steel vice that hold the house money ...and believe me SHe dont like dipping into that money to pay for bike bits.
The Honeydo ( honey do this and Honey do that ) works up to about a new set of chain and sprockets .
The other method is Just buy the stuff then batten down the hatches untill the noise goes away
Me I looked at the CR range and have decided that the 90s engine is more than enough for me , and up to 96 fully rebuildable So,,,,,,This year I will purchase a newer frame and swap my good bits over ..this should keep the old girl alive for a good few years to come , and at a HUGE saving to me ...
( not for the fient hearted as you can just slap a steel framed moter in an Aluminium chassis , things like rake trail , balance factor etc all have to be looked at ..BUT I think it can be done , so will be heading down this path ..
The noise dies away quite quickly around the 100 us dollar mark ...but at the 200 I start to concider a cheap hotel ...
Good luck ,ride the bike for a bit then decide what you want to do !!

Yeah I'm sort of confused about what to do at the moment. I've done so much to the bike already and I can get the barrel resleeved so it's like new for $280. It's ok, but has a few marks in it.
Just worried about updating and getting someone elses troubles.
Maybe a newwer 2 stroke would be just as good. At least I can do the piston still and not as complex as a 4 stroke.

sweet as,
if you can get a n upgrade now, go for it!!!!!!!!! well i would.
that way when the kids come, you got a bike that won cost you all the maintainace of an older bike.
kinda??

Well this has to go here !
Well its the Annual overhaul time, start with the frame check everything and put back together
The Engine mount holes are oval..Thats a good start , means I Have to machine new studs ! Nuts
And the plans for shortening the swingarm , maybe going out the window as my friends 125 had cracked its swingarm so will give him my spare
Never mind , luckily I have a drawing board I can refer back to
