Hey Y'all,
just bought a bike in Auckland and need to get it back home to New York.
Anyone have any shipping recommendations? I will have it crated up and dropped on a boat. Anyone know of a good shipping company for that or knows of an agent?
Help me bring meee baby home.
Thanks.

Well first you need to get your baby crated up, apparently the best way to do this is to find a dealer who should have crates from new bikes, get the bike disassembled and fitted into a crate, the reason for this is two fold, you should reduce the risk of damage and it is much easier to get it into a container in this format, you pay on weight and volume, an assembled bike has quite a bit more volume than one with the front wheel taken out.
As for shipping the idea is to use a reliable agent on both sides, understand the costs and requirements and let them do the work for you, it might sound like it will cost, but that little extra expense can save you a fortune should something arise you werent prepared for. Also this way all of your paperwork should be correct, one item missed out on some of the forms can mean your bike does not leave or will not leave the dock once it gets to your end.
Also insurance is a great idea, this is an extreme photo (http://www.cargolaw.com/apl_china.html) but this kind of stuff does happen and not just to ship plowing through typhoons.

Stay away from Crown relocations, and get the bike coated in shipping oil or it will rust fairly soon after you get it.

While browsing I found this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Parts-accessories/Other/photos/a-45786072/p-16210054.htm might give you an idea of what to expect to pay for a crate.

Thanks.

I've moved stuff around the world alot in the last 5 years in and out of NYC and Auckland. Never shipped bikes, but the principle is the same. Allied van lines are world wide and will crate and package for you. When it comes to a bike you'll have to drain all fuel remove battery and a bunch of other requirements before it can be crated, and this has to be okay'ed by the movers before it is packed away.
Try NZ van lines, they are partners with Allied as far as I know, just give 'em a call and they'll advise you and if they can't do anything for you or if the price isn't right they will put you in touch with someone who will.
