TM is often the best place for half decent tyres, or go to a race meet like Puke, and some people sell off old track tyres that they don't want to use any more, for like a hundred bucks..
forgot to mention that last night

I have seen a number of ex race tyres on TM going for reasonable prices. They state that they have reasonabl tread, 3mm edge 5mm centre. At they worth it, how long does a race tyre last on the road?

If they last 2-3 thou k that's acceptable, but any less and I don't see much sense.

I suppose the other issue is that they'd be a bugger to warm up on normal road conditions.

Wonder how much shops charge for putting new tyres on.

I wouldn't use race tyres as such. But there's tyres like Diablos etc, that have been hacked around a track for a meet or two. They're past their utter best for the track, but fine for the road. You'd probably get about 75% life out of most of the ones I've seen.. So that'd just depend on how you ride afterward

Yeh I been looking at this possibility too - I'm not current with tyre prices for the gixxer, all i know is that an 18inch rear on the vfr cost fuking heaps. What's the max price you should fork out for an average cond. 2nd hand road tyre - i think there's a rear diablo on retardme for $200 at the mo....

VFRs and only a few others, have 18" wheels. The regular 17" wheels are way cheaper. About 200 is a good price for that Diablo. And an ideal road tyre for this time of year..

If it's an option, get someone to bring one (or more) back with them from the US

Order them here (http://www.starcycle.com/street.html) and make sure you check out the specials around the place (on that site). In NZ dollar terms they're 1/2 the NZ price...

Exchange rates can be found here (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=200&from=USD&to=NZD)

Just a comment (or two): tyre 'fitness' isn't about just the tread depth - the ability of the tyre to soften and stick to the road (the most important bit of grip) is a consideration too. Tyres have a limited number of heat cycles in them. I've found with nearly all my tyres that they've started going 'off' well before they ran out of tread. For that reason, I wouldn't consider using secondhand tyres. Race takeoffs are popular with boy racer types, but are not a good option for the road because they don't get enough heat in them, and once again, tey may have done their dash as far as heat cycles go.

If money's a concern, have a talk with Kerry @ Motohaus. Not only can he fix you up with some 'budget' tyres, but he's stated lots of times that he's happy to "work something out" so that you can have a safe bike, even if you can't afford to pay full price for tyres up front.

I was thinking of giving rep as well, but I am not too sure what he meant.

I couldn't find any blue rep? Only green and red rep.

I understand green rep if I approve the post, and red rep if I disagree....but what if I am not sure to approve or disagree? It is time we have a new Blue rep point for posts that we are neutral to. :argh:
