View Full Version : First GT40 to be crashed?
Lou Girardin
24th January 2006, 14:53
Some plonker in Auckland crashed his new GT40. Stuffed it into a tree hard enough to write it off (bent in the middle).
He said he pulled out of his driveway and lost control trying "to avoid a speeding car".
Are we trying to set a 'most supercars written off per capita' record?
bugjuice

yeah, saw that on the news last night.
What made me laugh, is that Jeremy Clarkson almost didn't get one, and that you had to be on Ford's 'I really really really want one' list, and they pick you.. And then he goes and does that..
Anyone can get a Lambo, but how many GT40s are in NZ? Let alone this side of the world..

Jeremy wanted the first one ever to come into the UK - he did get it in the end after a bit of pleading.....
I think the issue with GT40 ownership has more to do with supply and demand than Enzo style snobbery...... there is enough demand in the US alone to avoid having to bother with other markets.
What a waste.......

I'll take that bet. It was owned and driven by, as mentioned above, Tim Watkins, one of the country's top drag racers. He is not a plonker, Lou. I've seen Tim run many of his street cars on the racetrack, including his Lambo. But hey, whatever makes you feel superior.

Typical of the media to hide the fact that he was a bit of a driver - so that we get the idea/impression that he's just a rich fool. - "Owned by some company director".......

Have you sat in one(original model) Motu - the hype dies down real quick.
Your knees stop you from turning the wheel easily, you cannot physically see the pedals -even if you wanted to while sitting down. Rearwards and sideways visibilty is a joke and you can barely see out the front - oh and the roof is pressing on your head too, operating the gear lever to your right is a cramped awkward affair.... then there's the heat and noise -- Huge respect goes out to the Le Mans winners.

It's not just a Ford you stupid ignorant fool - it's a GT40 the car that showed a big stiff middle finger to that damn snobby ex Alfa Romeo racing engineer called Enzo Ferrari - it was one of the most serious American assaults on the global motoracing scene......... it was........ oh why do I bother......
The car I sat in was at the Lotus Showroom in Kumeu - it was a multi award winning replica with a build price of nearly NZ$200,000 in Concourse condition.... so it was as close to a real GT40 as you can realistically get.
The current car is called a GT as Ford lost the naming rights to the GT40 moniker. The GT is also much larger than the older car and 3 inches taller - which is a lot in sports car dimensions. Also as far as pure bang for buck is concerned it's also one of the best available ever easily beating the GT3 RS and Stradale for value.

Yep, Ford demonstrated to Ferrari exactly what a truly enormous budget can achieve. Both then and probably now too. Does anyone notice that Ford's greatest claim to fame these days is copying and modernising the one truly great race car they ever made to "better" the latest bargain basement Ferrari? Jeez, a 360 is a nice car, but it's hardly the pinnacle of Ferrari.
And how did Clarkson's write up of the new F430 go? Didn't he wish he'd held out and bought one of them instead?
A mate (single, high income, no kids) was gonna buy one of the NZ GT40 kits a year or two back. But he dicked around and never got around to buying it, and then they changed the specs and doubled the price or something so it just never happened. Which was a shame, cos with him being based overseas, and his Lotus 7 replica taking up floorspace at his parent's place, I was picturing a free GT40 replica in my garage for a while there... firing it up once a month, testing it's high speed stability (or lack of), cruising the beaches...

Wasn't the whole GT40 issue caused by ego problems between Ford and Ferrari rather than anything else, with Ford pissed off that Enzo wouldn't sell??
Enzo Ferrari by that time was widely regarded as one of the best race engineers of the time so I guess Ford needed the extra cubes to make up for the better handling Ferraris.

aha found it,
ford gt70, around about 4 made but there have been reports of others. it used a 240hp 1977cc all alloy inline 4, although there were plans of a 2600cc all alloy v6 and a 1800cc four aswell, i think they made one of each...
one competed but had to retire due to suspension problems so the good old escort took over. rant finished:niceone:Different car to the GT60. The GT60 looks like a sleeker bigger GT40 (no not 60 inches high either)

It was a bit longer and had stacked circular headlights compared to the rectangular headlights of the GT40. The front spoiler/bumper section was more rounded too. It looked quite different to the GT40 .

That was purely a concept car - actually more of a design study than an actual car. It didn't drive or handle that great but could be driven from point a-b.

kinda like a ford wannabe veyron except that it was way before the veyron. hmmm i reckon it would have handled quite well just not compared to the existing competition, eg f50, macca f1, b-engineering edonis and such like;)

The existing competion is the Merc/Mclaren SLR, Carrera GT, Murceilago, Enzo, Vanquish, Koenigsegg, Veyron.
Doesn't mean they're better though.

Yes to all.
