Petrol prices up 6c

24.01.06 1.50pm

Motorists will have to open their wallets a little wider as petrol prices increased by up to 6 cents per litre today.

BP and Shell garages in Wellington both reported increases in fuel prices while Mobil is expected to follow.

Caltex said it had not increased prices.

At one BP garage in Wellington the price of unleaded 91 rose from 142 cents per litre to 147.9 cents per litre.

The rising price of crude oil has been exacerbated by the recent fall of the New Zealand dollar against the US dollar.

A barrel of benchmark Dubai crude out of Singapore has risen to US$63.94 from US$61.57 on January 13 (3.8 per cent), but in New Zealand dollars, the price has risen from $89.24 from $97.62 (9.4 per cent) over the same period.

The question is, will we be seeing another increase in bike sales because of it?
It would be great to get an idea from the dealers we have on the site. In the middle of last year I spoke with a dozen or so "in the industry" and they said small bike sales and scooters were selling like hot-cakes.

I don't feel unnecessarily charitable towards those err... gentlemen

More for me means more gear, quicker... and my timing keeps on sucking, so it adds up.

Good, good. Higher it gets, more bikers there be. Wish I owned a bike shop, they'll be queueing up next week for scooters and GN250s.

Petrol is still cheap as compared to the 60's and 70's, reckon it needs to hit about $2.50 a litre. Will soon. :yeah:

the bastards keep putting it up for fear of a terrorist attack but it never happens, and then the price doesn't come down again, then a week later the same excuse is used for another price rise :wait: , what about the 6c a litre you took from us last week you wankers

I pity the middleman.

He's paying cents per dollar as transaction fees by credit card or eftpos.. with fuel prices and costs going up he has to pay more off his markup to the bank.

Funny, because I also see the govt gaining more in their 12.5% (or overall 45%) in tax too...

But yeah, we're getting screwed over by the big guys at the top.

A couple of dollars my arse man! somebody who works in the transport industry might be able to set me straight, but up until now it seems some companies have been pretty relaxed about passing on increased costs - possibly because of the nature of the worm... but i always notice fuel prices not so much when i'm at the pump but when im shopping for the necessities - you know... like food? it all starts costing a bundle more when the costs get passed on man ...

to enlighten you on the sales situation petrol prices hit $1.50 the phone did not stop ringing until the price dropped again scooters sold out within maybe a couple of days....we got an urgent 20 foot container in by the time it got here we were unloading them from the container putting plates on them and they went out the door...
as they were already sold before the container probably even left china...

so in came another 40 footer and thats getting down on those..... more 40 footers on the way i think.

ive got a scooter i'm about to sell myself a 2005 in mint condition stuff all k's may see how high petrol goes before i sell up but will be very soon as ive been watching what is happening...

so many people love the fact of driving on a car license...

and low rego cost....and low fuel consumption so they fly out the door when gas goes up.

my 147.9 cents (lol)

Cheers: MA

This is all quite funny really. Over the last few years the strenthening of the NZD vs the USD has had no effect on the cost of petrol, but now it goes the other way and they whack up the price! Cunts sums it up I think!

With high petrol prices I was able to sell my trade my 250 in & got the best price possible then dealer almost sold it for what I had paid for it new.
If prices are going up & people buy small bikes then a few years from now bikes will rule the road.

I'm riding my mountain bike now :nya:
I've got my reasons for it too  (Pst: Since October: Exercise).

The rising prices of fuel, power, phone, food & everything else, are starting to hurt big time.

Think I might buy a 150 to get to work on instead of taking the cage!. Bloody hell it costs me around $100/wk on fuel to get to and from work :angry2: :angry2:

I am not wealthy but guess there is nothing we can really do about it and when I break it down:
Car - $4.80 extra every 3 weeks
Bike - $2.04 extra every week if I do a weekend ride

So, $16.52 extra a month/$4.13 a week......2 sets of tyres is about $20 per week.....

The ferry prices have gone up 10% which is $6 less but the daily return trip cannot be more than 4km so makes petrol price increases insignificant

so in the whole scheme of things I guess it is not that bad...no point worrying about it something we cannot do anything about.

Unfortunately that is what all the whining exporters and farmers have been grovelling to the gubbinmint for...

It's a condemnation of "market forces" that a product doesn't have to actually become scarce before the price goes up. Just the expectation is excuse enough. But it does make George Dubya mates very happy.
Caltex haven't followed, why not support them?

it's not the first time it's gone up. A few months ago 91 was over $1.50 and everyone bitched.

It came down, and no one said a word.

It goes back up a little, and everyone bitches again.

I don't like increased costs as much as the next one, but fuel will go up, and possibly down a little. Fact of life, get over it. Walk more.

People still pay several dollars for a bottle of water from the shop.... whats wrong with the free stuff out of the tap?

Fuel increases are gonna happen if you like or not, save money in other areas if you have to to cope with it.

Good idea - do the numbers mate...

Let's pick on summat I know of... a GN250.

* Purchase price $3995
* Insurance for it - dunno about you, but budget $200/pa?

You're spending $5000/year on fuel, the GN would go through 1/10 of that?

Factor in the reduced mileage on the car... maintenance etc - and consider the the possibilty of selling it...(not likely I expect - but only you can assess that)

I think a wee bike would pay for itself PDQ... 12 months tops!

Exactly!, there are ways and means of dealing with fuel increases. Get a bike thats cheap to run and leave the cage at home :2thumbsup

Wonder what he’s getting now?
Can’t say I've noticed a drop in traffic, petrol isn’t as expensive when it’s raining...

Nah, it's not here YET!! But it's a shitload more streamlined than the 'lorry' to which I refer so SHOULD be a little cheaper to run (like 15mpg around town vs the present 12mpg!)
