Hi, thanks to Uncle B we had a great turn out for a newbies ride today (and some oldbies like myself) so I'll start posting pics here.

It was a big turn out probably around 30 in all but I never counted - did anybody?

We had a few going on about the weather before the start but it was only mist and it was lifting off the city and the Wairarapa but you can see it was still hanging on the Rimutakas. Temp was around 28 deg so no complaints.

Awesome turnout considering the fog made the weather look crap in all directions.
Nice meeting you all.
Wow, those last 5 photos look particulary artistic, merv :2thumbsup

As you can see a great turn out of young, old and those in between. You'll all need to come back and tell me your names again if you want them listed against the pics.
It was the usual trip route - meet at Caltex Rimutaka, stop at the top of the Rimutaka Hill to let everyone regroup, and then do the same at the bottom of the hill at Featherston. Then it was on to Martinborough for lunch at the Flying Fish. I was too keen to get my food there with such a crowd turning up I didn't bother getting the camera out there. Others may have so let's see what gets posted.

Yeah great to see you Moxy. Are you an Australian because I see your camera is on Aussie time, about 2 hours slow?
Here's some more pics.
Now there were a couple of bins I think - minor ones - but I'll leave those involved to tell you their story though I was near enough right behind one of them. You don't get experience without getting experience!

I told you I'd bring my camera - always do - so the pics keep on coming.
Who is that oldbie with rabbits ears sticking up out of his head?

Greta photos as usual Merv. My apologies for not making it along to the ride.
Next time.

OK now his ears have gone and most of his hair with it.
That's a nice black bike Uncle B has now.
These shots are at Mobil Masterton after we had done a ride from Flying Fish out the back to Gladstone. Not everyone came on that part of the ride.
Then we headed back stopping at the top of the Rimutakas again.
Going up the hill I wondered how long Uncle B was going to sit calmly before he decided it was time to give it a quick squirt. I chased him on Mrs merv's DR650, with her on the back, but "surprisingly" the DR didn't seem to have the acceleration the GSXR1000K5 does!

OK continuing with the pics - don't you just love digital cameras? - you just keep on shooting!
A few action shots here as people pulled up at the top of the hill.

Work.
I'm still here. I didn't go home after getting to work on Friday at 8am, until 4pm Saturday. My intention was to come along today, but here I am at work again on Sunday.

A big :niceone: to everybody. Stoked with the turnout.
Great day, plenty of positive feedback.
Thanks to Merv, Sels1 & co-pilot Clair for hanging back and checking the rear (so to speak)
Have been asked to organise another Newbie ride and perhapse making it a regular thing.......looking for feedback on this.
Great day, good riding, thanks everybody.

Yeah thanks again Uncle B. Me and Mrs merv enjoyed that and would be happy to come with the newbies again, that's so long as they want us oldbies along. Heck someone has to take the photos eh! It was a good run for the DR as well so the VFR got a rest.

What time were you guys at the top of the takas on the way back.
We'd shot over to the fish for coffee and on our way back there was a huge group at the top of the takas. Probably would have been about 3ish.
We didn't stop cause we'd been fighting our way through traffic and I was a little busy to wave.

29th January 2006, 18:05
Slingshot yeah around bang on 3pm we were there on the way back. Quite a few other bikes buzzed by, you must have been one of them.

R6 with a pillion? A few of us watched you arcing over the top - very nice. Scary for the passenger though....

Ha! In my defence I'd like to say it wasn't like that before we started. Honest.
Off to the shops tomorrow....

No no no, you said that all wrong.
That should have been: "That's one scary passenger."

Don't worry, she's used to it. :bleh:

I'll tell her you said that:Oi:

Well, she is scary! I was stumbling up Cuba Mall one lunchtime, as is my wont, when I spotted her sitting in a shrubbery outside Farmers. Something about the look on her face suggested a flip, "Hello, Mrs Slingshot", would've caused me some pain.
Anyway being frightened of women in general isn't a bad thing. Much better for one's health.

Was a good day out. My group went out to Lake Fairy and met up with Jimbo, Flame, Dover, Poos and a few others.
Thanx to Darkman for allowing me to ride his Blackbird too! What an amazing bike! At high speed, it feels like you could put it into lazy boy mode and put your feet up. VERY COMFY BIKE!
Glad to hear that there was no major carnage, although i did hear that someone did come off coming down the tuka's. Hope the damage isnt too bad.

hsvboy06 - you OK now mate? Any lasting damage to yourself or just the pride and is that healing now too?
Were my comments on the other thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=492783#post492783 of any use to you?

When are you doing another ride on this route? What was the pace of the ride like (would I be able to keep up)??
merv
31st January 2006, 20:32
Pace of the ride was OK for FXR150s so you'd be OK on yours when the next ride occurs. You don't ride over 100km/hr do you its against the law eh!! Uncle B was positive he would do another one soon.

Yeah, I'm fine. Pride and confidence a little dented, but I'm sure those will recover, too. The bike might still be sporting some scars next time you see it. Yes, your comments (and everyone else's) were appreciated and hopefully have taken up residence in a prominent place in my brain.
