Hi,

As my first post in the n00b section proclaimed, I am currently seeking to move to your beautiful country. The main reason is Steinlager, but that's not how I justified the idea to my family!

My question is, does anyone have any experience with a company called http://www.newjobz.co.nz/

They charge for consultancy and claim to be able to get me an interview/job before my arrival. I am interested to know if these are a respectable organisation as $300 could buy me a new helmet!

Cheers

Mike

Our families only experience with job agencies are that they're a crock of shit.

Nice and friendly like, but generally they are just trying to get you a job, any job, so when you turn up it's usually a piece of shit.

Takes ages here to get a job, in relation to UK anyways... have to go through about 15 different interviews / tests, then they apply for references, then they seem to flip a coin to see if you get the job

Enjoy your new helmet mate.
Anybody with half a brain can find work in NZ.

Steinlager?? You're in for a pleasant surprise then. While it may be New Zealand's only "international" beer brand, Steinlager is crap compared with many other New Zealand beers.

Hey mike, I would ask if you get your money back if you don't get an interview and also make sure the interview is for the job YOU are looking for.
Most recruitment agencies will start the process for free inc the video interviewing but might not offer you a job untill you land as there could be immigration delays etc. I would be wary of an agency that can GUARANTEE you an interview.

I've never heard that candidates would pay agencies to look for jobs, especially in such a tight job market like NZ. Don't they get 10% of your gross income as a fee from future employers?

If you decide to use Newjobz then please DO NOT mention your thirst for Steinlager lol! I havn't had any experience with this crowd but reading their website i get the impression they are catering for those foreigners who 'need' help finding employment over here, so in that respect $300 is probably worth it for those individuals. Whether you fit into that category or not I don't know, but if you have the wherewithal and confidence to scout around and find work for yourself, like so many immigrants do, then you don't need to pay anything, just means it will take you more time and effort to do the ground work yourself! Hey you could even try throwing your credentials/qualifications on here to generate some leads??

All the best with the move over. :2thumbsup

Use the money for a new lid mate. My family had a turn with these guys. Nothing but a waste of money IMO. Took dad 7 months for them to try and find him a job. In the end his job he got was great and helped me get to what Im doing today.

Good luck with the move over.

there should be plenty of IT work over here. there's plenty of free help on here. buy a new lid.

and steinlager is ok for making beer bread and chicken, and marinating steak, but there's plenty more boutique beers that are much yummier. and there's always Waikato.

don't, whatever you do, ever, buy montieths summer ale. you have been warned.

Or Rheineck. Why do Aucklanders like this stuff, or is it the "milky latte" of beer?

Nah they're all crap except Speights or Monteiths. Anything from Lion gives me a stinking headache before I get to the third drink. DB I can handle if I really have to. As for Steinlager I get embarrassed whenever I see one of those "they're drinking our beer here" ads. Only because it has to be dumped on other countries beacuse its so shit. True about the Summer Ale though kinda like one of those lolly drinks.

I've had no dealings and have never heard anything about them in the Wellington IT (At least in my NZ role for the last 10 years) . Maybe they have a good network with recruiters, but you really need to target IT recruitment companies first.

If you can , it's worth getting a NZ working visa sorted out before you start applying for jobs , that way your CV won't be put on the bottom of the pile :msn-wink: .

Check out www.yellowpages.co.nz , put in recruitment and Wellington and follow the link.

Try the following quick links as well

http://www.duncanryan.co.nz/ (Used these guys before to get staff)
http://www.recruit.co.nz
http://www.iconrec.co.nz/
www.netcheck.co.nz

I'd argue with Wesel that the UK job IT contracting is the same :hitcher: .
Then when you get work , they want you to slow down and do shorter days :nya: .

Thanks guys, I had a similar idea but it's always good to 1st hand knowledge from people in the area.
I'm normally a Stella Artois beer monster but having visited NZ it was a bit of nostaliga to discover Steinlager in my local supermarket! :)

If anyone here wants to move to the UK, my house is for sale!

No thanks.
I would, however, consider moving to anywhere that Stella Artois isn't....mustelid liquid waste

Mie - let us know what you do - there's a good chance someone on here is in the appropriate industry(ies) and can point you in the right direction.

What role are you after (seniority, location etc)?

2nd line ICT, servers, desktops, LAN WAN, Citrix plus a fair bit more.
No preference on location, will take a job in Burger King if I have to, to get where I need :)

The recruitment agencies never really did me much good, but....

If you're on a time limit (and even if you're not, you want a decent job ASAP), you need to work every angle you can, as hard as you can. Work any contacts you have. This forums prbably as good a place as any to pick up leads.

NZ is smaller than the UK, and it can come as a bit of a shock to find that the industries are smaller, the companies are smaller, and there are generally less opportunities. A lot more is done through networking - everyone knows everyone else, and whether you get the job or not seems to depend on whether the boss likes the look of you or not - whether you'll fit in with the team. None of that psychometric testing shit here.

One of the standard questions that newbs at my place get asked is 'do you drink?'

'um, yes'

'good, you'll fit in fine, then.'

Wine won't be an issue, you'll be able to buy the NZ wines that are considered boutique in up market London hotels or at Harrods at the local NZ wine store. Oh I sorry …. I mean “New World Wines” … not boutique.

You'll have fun acquainting yourself with Martinborough , Marlborough and Hawkes Bays wines , some good ones are coming out of the Auckland region as well.
Only NZ wines I've seen in Waitrose / M&S have normally been entry level Montana or Montana Reserve if you’re lucky.

m99dws - I have someone here at the moment who is a solicitor specialising in Immigration.

The best advise she can give you, based on the information that you have given on your posts in this thread is:

Go to www.immigration.govt.nz and go to the pages on Apply and Settle.
They set out what you need to do and where to get assistance etc.
It offers links to government sites relating to finding a job in New Zealand which won't cost you money !

Also, it sets out the order in which to do things ie: you cant get a work permit until you have a job offer, and you need a job offer to apply for residence in New Zealand.

The other thing I forgot to mention that we didn't find out until we were here is this: Finding a job is quite dependent (more so than the UK) on the time of year you arrive and are actively seeking work.

The slack time is any time in the three-month run up to Christmas - everyone is tired, holding on for a holiday and there's no money in anyone's budgets for new employees.

The dead time is from christmas to now. Some firms aren't back from their summer break yet.

Any time from now on it'll start picking up.

I have been granted a working holiday visa so will be arriving on that. Once I can get to permanent job status I should be able to exchange that for a work permit and take it from there really.

Can I have a contact name/email for your friend please? I still have a few questions regarding the whole process.

I have no idea how desperate you are to get a job here but if you have a bus drivers licence New Zealands your oyster. Shitty pay and hours but at least you'll have a job until something better turns up. There's a nationwide shortage so anywhere in NZ and your're here laughing. I'm serious.
